to land a ship on mars that is capable
of being refueled and then being flown
back to earth this is a very hard
problem it’s a very dynamic higher entry
speeds higher heating and less margin of
error so we have an enormous momentum to
take out now we use first a heat shield
and the surface of the heat shield to
give you a big push back it’s like when
you are in the car and you stick your
hand out and that starts slowing us down
but that’s not enough to slow us down to
the speed we need to go and then you
need that very throw rocket you know to
even slow you down further you wouldn’t
need to carry fuel with you to fire in
the opposite direction you’re going so
that you will slow down and you need
enough fuel to slow down to zero to then
have a soft landing on the surface and
then the realization where some of the
first people ever to set foot on another
planet
