Josie Underwood’s Civil War Diary | Nat Geo Live

there was a 20 year old girl named Josie
Underwood from Bowling Green who kept a
diary she had so many relatives at
shallow that she was almost caught up in
the battle as much as she would have
been if she’d been into fighting herself
600,000 soldiers on both sides were
killed during the Civil War which would
translate today with today’s population
to 10 million then and probably 60
million wounded casualties hers was a
particularly plaintive story because her
family was staunch unionists in a town
that was predominantly pro-confederate
friendships was shattered and when the
rebel army came through a family’s
magnificent home was burned to the
ground but saddest of all she fell in
love with a handsome and wealthy lawyer
in Memphis and the story of their
courtship is moving he joined the
Confederacy while she remained a staunch
unionist and the passages in her diary
in which she confronts the conflicting
patriotic differences are almost
heartbreaking in the end of course he is
killed and she seems never to forgive
herself
this was the kind of war that was being
waged not only occasionally brother
against brother or friend against friend
but lovers against lovers the war
touched every home but the human
suffering caused by the war such as
Josie Underwood’s remains incalculable
