Jason Silva on the Paranormal | Brain Games

paranormal fascinating subject we all
love scary movies we all hear stories
ghost stories which is monsters under
the bed Bigfoot and so on and so forth
but ultimately the paranormal stems from
the brains love of patterns so your
brain loves to connect with dots it
loves to spot a signal amidst the noise
it loves to decipher chaos and find
structure and meaning but the problem is
this capacity to see patterns can
actually go awry you can go into
overdrive
you can you can suffer from what’s known
as pattern isset II that’s when you’re
actually seeing patterns that are not
there you’re reading too much into
things your love of a signal amidst the
noise makes you find a signal where
there is none and so a lot of the times
because the brain doesn’t like what it
doesn’t understand it can attribute a
strange noise or an odd shadow with
supernatural meaning it’s a way to
regain control it’s a way to say I know
what that is that’s a ghost it must be
its spirit it’s the only thing that can
explain this inexplicably weird sound
and so we assign meaning the things
erroneously and we do this all the time
it starts from a place of making sense
of something we don’t quite understand
but miss reading that pattern going too
far with it becomes pathological that is
the source of the paranormal folks there
are no ghosts
