it’s mid-january in the Antarctic and
summertime is in full swing for a colony
of Adelie penguins there’s no time to
rest the breeding season is only halfway
over since October Mayola delis have
staked out their nesting sites small
circles of a few hundred pebbles that
keep their young warm and dry
competition for the best spots and the
best mates can be fierce eggs are
usually laid in November with the
parents taking turns incubating the eggs
by December 1 or 2 fluffy chicks have
emerged and demand thick at two to four
weeks old these chicks still depend on
their parents they won’t be ready to
hunt for themselves for a month or more
but as they grow so do their appetites
the parents shuffle off into the ocean
and zip through the water in search of
krill and small fish
[Music]
the chicks sit in small groups called
crushes and wait patiently for their
parents return and sometimes not so
patiently once they’ve returned to shore
the parents hone in on their children’s
cries the chicks beg for food by pecking
and
this stimulates our feeding response and
a nice hot meal of partially digested
food pours out into the chicks mouth
when begging doesn’t work a hungry chick
and you felt very demand even want to
check his fully flesh it won’t reach
sexual maturity for three or four years
though he’s not quite old enough to make
this young male was getting a head start
on building his nest by stealing rocks
from other nests you’ll need all that
energy soon enough as this year’s
parents can attest raising chicks is a
lot of work
