Gullah Geechee Storyteller Preserves a Painful Past | National Geographic

I want Jesus to walk with me when I’m on
my lonesome journey Lord Aion Jesus I
want Jesus you walking with me
well I’d a daddy no foretell Hoonah
sudden boat me ancestor them I can feel
the presence day at a derrickman know
coz I know you to watch over me I grew
up not knowing where I came from
oh how I got here and why am I being
treated as less than a human’s you know
a grandmother sent out a buckler chillin
go there I don’t look more clean di san
I can’t go over and over play a damn
bunker then we knew that the whites were
different but we didn’t really know why
so it was just another day in the life
of a little girl a girl and opinio on
these hallowed and secret ground on this
place we call Edisto Island we I grew up
Oh freedom
freedom almost everybody that lived on
this island were enslaved Africans
Alcala people and be in the island he
had nothing but plantation and all the
colony wait oh you know if cotton and
their rice and all the indigo the
enslaved Africans had to find a way to
communicate so that language was pretty
much born here in America my generation
is really the last generation to have
direct contact with Gullah speaking
people and color was their only language
and unless we pass it on to our children
then it will die out just rip everything
from all the chilling the snatch of the
app caddy baby this really mad I’ve
really paired up it and that mean we had
no sense of family tour we have to let
our young people know about the struggle
we have to go all the way back to Africa
where it all began so that they know
who’s back there standing on and before
ideas may I be buried in my grave and go
home to my goal and be free and be free
you
