Feeding the Elderly in Arkansas | National Geographic

I cannot live if I do not use with the
older generation the rent their
utilities their co-pays at the doctor’s
office their medications beads of their
chair they do without the very essential
food insecurity exists it’s real and
it’s more prevalent than anyone ever
thought in our rural Arkansas towns one
in three children live in households
that are insecure and ready
and now our seniors 24 so for 13 years
now I’ve done delivery of food to the
elderly each senior citizen will get a
vegetable bag of fruit bag of meat bag
and a staple that they’ll have to get a
few things from the grocery store to
last them that month but their their
bills should be decreased significantly
it’s been demonstrated that as you
become increasingly food insecure your
nutritional intake drops dramatically
obesity levels come up diabetes comes up
that USDA picture of what a meal should
be is just not in these households I
come from the farm started working topic
I was 4 years old I’ve done a little bit
of all kind of work it is and I enjoyed
every bit I always work then had to hurt
that and from you know nothing else some
monkeys harder I leave on 836 dollars a
month
ain’t nothing keeping her story if I got
a great flowering water I can eat you
might not be exactly what I want people
not mind I want to sit down to the
biscuits and gravy made out of water but
ate a many of them you got to eat
something if it weren’t for the food
bank
oh don’t worry dude every day there’s a
new knock at the door every day there’s
a new story of legitimate need when you
see people that have a sense of
desperation about them and you can calm
that you can quell that with just no
more than a sack of groceries
that’s pretty awesome in silence they do
the best they can if you ask them
publicly they’ll say I’m doing just fine
but if you take them food you could see
the gratitude
I turn no way away no
