Episode 4: Breakfast of Champions | Seavey vs. Seavey

I’m Dallas Seavey I’m a professional
sled dog racer in 2012 I finished in
front of my dad and became the youngest
person ever to win the Iditarod come on
guys that’s hot dallas everything he
knows but I haven’t taught him
everything I know
so Dallas is just gonna have to stay out
of my way
hey batter stay for some breakfast
good boy feeding 100 dogs is a major
task first of all it’s not always the
same if it’s 40 below or if it’s 40
above you’re gonna feed the dogs
entirely differently
you’re gonna need different ratios of
fat to protein you if you putting weight
on now
yeah good deal generally when it’s time
to feed the dog we’re going to start by
taking a 50-pound block of beef or
chicken cutting it into about 5 pound
pieces you’ll put those five pound
pieces in a five-gallon bucket and add
hot water to it so it melts it out and
makes kind of a thick soup base this is
how they get their hydration on top of
that we’re gonna add their vitamins and
about 20 cups of dog food for 10 dogs
and we have all sorts of little
additives that go in there can’t say I’m
all the kind of secret what we use my
dad’s my biggest competitor you don’t
want to share those secrets so we kind
of have jokingly nicknamed my dad and
his kennel the Russians because they’re
always trying to steal our secrets but
oh listen to Dallas you would think this
relationship was some sort of
international espionage situation I
think he refers to me and my kennel as
the Russians or something there you go
we each like to think we have our own
secrets that they give us a little bit
of an edge these are freezers here
actually two of them
this one is chicken and beef liver and
fish and some other secret ingredients
that Dallas doesn’t need to see my dad’s
got an awesome freezer system I mean
that thing looks like it should be and
no a major grocery store story who knows
what that’s the advantage that he has
having race dogs now for 20 25 years he
has all the infrastructure for me I’m
still in that phase we were rebuilding
everything you can’t afford to buy
everything at once
Dallas doesn’t have a freezer so you
know he leaves his stuff lay around for
the birds to get it and all that and of
course when I go to his house I’ll see
everything he’s got he doesn’t need to
see what’s behind door number two there
Racing food
so we got a full pallet which is similar
just over 2,000 pounds I think it’s
2,000 2,500 pounds of chicken we’ll just
do a tower of chicken Tower of beef the
dog food will be under the stairs over
there yeah we don’t have a freezer
everything has to be stored outside
which is great as long as a zero 10
below 50 below but sometimes even in the
winter if we’ll have 36 40 above and
you’re always kind of nervous when this
starts clouding up or snow and it’s how
warm is it gonna get we’ve got you know
100 dog houses and pins and everything
else but we haven’t got to a freezer yet
you can only do so much at a time
without being completely broke did you
see but you know if you look back when
my parents were my age this is more
similar to what they had it takes time
to build that infrastructure but boy
Paxson you can crunch that stuff down
yeah
