DIY – The Color Game | Brain Games

[Music]
the perception you have of color depends
on a lot of things for instance the
light illuminating the objects but also
the color of the surrounding things and
what we’re going to demonstrate to you
is that you can elicit a compelling
sensation of color through sounds even
something that’s complicated as music
that sounds a little weird or crazy it
may be so but it’s a good idea to try it
out which we’re going to do right now so
here I am in the brain scanner Jeff and
the outset is going to play some clips
and I want you to just think of the
first color that comes to your minds and
stick with it okay you’re ready to play
alright let’s go for it
alright that was the first one so now
you pick a color here comes the second
clip
okay so now we move on to the third clip
ready and go
[Music]
[Music]
so now that you’ve picked your three
colors for these three pieces let me see
if I can guess what you thought for the
first choice what did you guess I’m
gonna guess you thought yellow if you
did then you’d be like 70 or more
percent of the respondents were asked to
judge this what about the second piece a
little bit slower in a minor key
the majority of respondents actually
picked blue what about the third
slightly weird rock ballad what came up
for you there if it was red then you’re
like the majority of response to that
country now you can try this with your
friends and family by playing them
different kinds of music so see if you
get a consistent judgment from them play
them something that sort of happy and
upbeat in a major key something more sad
and see if they get a consistent
judgment of what color they experience
you’ll have discovered another one of
those linkings between music and color
which is compelling although difficult
to understand in a brain that’s very
complicated and has lots of parts inside
you
