Dillie the Deer: Love on Tiny Hooves | National Geographic

Emily Dickinson described hope as that
thing with feathers apparently it can
also be that thing with fur big ears and
cloven hooks love comes in the door in
many ways quite unexpectedly luck came
into our life late one crisp June
evening in the most improbable of
vehicles tiny hoods of a dying faun I
wrote a book called dilly love unhooks
which is the story of the love that she
brought into our life I was diagnosed
with stage-4 and a Mitra cancer and as I
reread through my writing I realized
that that was my eulogy
how could we have known then that this
struggling blind creature would become
such a part of our life at that time we
didn’t even believe she was going to
survive the night if she was destined to
push herself into our hearts and home
forever
her love bank was so plentiful that she
would touch the lives and hearts of
people all over the world this small
dying meaningless creature rejected by
her mother and unwanted by anyone in the
world became dilly the dear love on
hooks you don’t even have to go out to
the Trini Joey tree to you when animal
people look at an animal they see beyond
the fur fins and feathers
instead they see the beauty of creation
that’s the only trick with all its
wonder and mystery hardship and joy what
would it even have mattered if dilly had
died on the farm the universe wouldn’t
have skipped a beat no one would have
noticed yet in saving her life she has
saved mine in giving her love she has
given me so much more she proves to me
that every life is a gift
you
