CO Finalist | National Geographic Bee 2011

hi I’m Isabella continuity and I’m from
Lakewood Colorado what I like about
geography is that it’s really broad it
has a lot of different areas of study
there’s always something new to learn
also you can help people in a lot of
weeks
no all day a snow day stop it what why
are you I’m just checking my email yeah
bless me I mean these are all the
geography stuff and then when the Sun is
in her eyes she puts on this hat and
she’s not very happy with me right now
and Mommy has a fit over this desk turn
that thing off this is a red rocks park
and it is a state park in my hometown of
lakewood colorado it has a lot of these
big red sandstone cliffs and rock
formations lots of people like to come
here to hike and bike and enjoy other
outdoor activities and my elementary
school is right under these cliffs and
they were the backdrop of all the
classrooms I was in up until this year
so now i’m in fiddles outside you can
see that it’s snowing and this is
actually the day after i was at red
rocks park which shows that the weather
in colorado can change very quickly hey
geographers out there what climate is an
example of here you can see our study
space and this is our old atlas it’s
very marked up and used and well-loved
the pages are falling out and here are
our geography notebooks there’s seven of
them and we’re about to start on our
eighth right there that’s the picture of
me winning last year and then here is
our map of Italy that’s where my dad is
from so I’m half-italian geography
teaches you a lot about people and
cultures in the world and when you learn
geography you realize that half the
world’s population lives on two dollars
or less a day and they don’t have
electricity food running water or many
of the things that we enjoy and by
learning geography you can find ways to
help them in ways to make the world a
better place for example our family has
an adopted brother from Guatemala and we
have a sponsor child in Guatemala to
sponsorship means to give a few dollars
a month so that that person can have
education and food
golden golden is amazing forest area and
lots of people come here because there’s
a lot of restaurants too and there’s the
coors brewing but I don’t think you care
about that golden is kind of where
Colorado started because of the gold
rush it was here that gold was
discovered and it’s also here that
there’s the National seismology
laboratory so when you hear about the
earthquakes in Japan or Haiti all the
information comes here there’s gold in
them Hills
oh hi I wanted to show you my currency
collection and I have currencies from
around the world from about 25 different
countries these are some of my favorites
this is an indonesian rupiah and this is
a 90 Burmese cuts and this is 10
drachmas and one Netherlands gilder some
of these currencies that I have aren’t
in use anymore but it’s still fun to
collect them and look at them and you
can still learn about places from them
so i have a currency trivia question for
you which are the only two countries in
the world that have a currency that is
not based on a base 10 decimal system
the answer is the maritime Ian booyah
and the Madagascar re re and this is my
family they’re my biggest supporters
they’re awesome and my dad is my coach
keeping Isabella relaxing after a hard
session of geography study Oh daddy what
did you study today zabila um I don’t
remember well like I would ask for what
about the double capitals oh yeah
