Close Encounters with a Dangerous Shark | Ocean Soul

so I was working on a story for National
Geographic magazine about sharks in the
Bahamas one of the sort of the Holy
Grail elusive species that I hope to get
was the oceanic whitetip which is
considered the fourth most dangerous
species of shark if you pay attention to
such list problem was this animal really
had been seen in the Bahamas by divers
for probably twenty or thirty years
sixteen days we only had one encounter
but it was a magical encounter we had
anchored the boat over the edge of a
deep bank we throttled back the engine
and we’re just going to sit there and
wait and just as we throttled back the
engine this fin appeared off our Stern
and looking at that dorsal fin you could
see just a little bit of white splashed
on the top so it was indeed an oceanic
whitetip the thing that we had come to
see so I scrambled from the bridge
immediately threw on my wetsuit grabbed
my camera and jumped in the water and in
the distance in this beautiful blue
crystal-clear water in the Bahamas I saw
this oceanic whitetip I had two
immediate thoughts my first thought was
I can’t believe I’m in the water with an
oceanic whitetip and my second thought
was I can’t believe I’m in the water
with no static whitetip this could be
dangerous and sure enough this animal
just came right on me and had a bead
came right towards me and it came over
and sort of bounced its nose off my dome
port on my camera housing and then it
circled around and came back I was a
sitting duck it would have had no
problem meeting me but it just came in
and was highly curious who wanted to
check me out wanted to know what I was
so I shot photos for about 20 minutes
two hours she just continued to do these
beautiful big circles around us she
would come in and check me out and just
allowed me some fantastic opportunities
to photograph this animal just a
stunning experience of magical encounter
could in our lifetime be extinct
