science with a side order of comedy
before we learn who the audience thinks
presented the coolest fact of the night
we’re going to play a little game we
call the smartest guy in the room so
here’s how we play we each pick a
question at random to be clear none of
us have seen these before and we all get
to answer tonight’s category is bugging
out these are questions about insects
when a cockroach loses its head it can
continue living for weeks weeks weeks
with no head yeah I’m gonna say false
how does it eat right well it’s got a
huge hole now roaches are notoriously
like they could survive all sorts of
things and who knows what you could do
to them and they’ll survive yeah I’m
gonna say true as well
true true yeah they didn’t want to clap
for it they didn’t want they’re like I
don’t want that to be true I do not want
that to be true yeah it says that they
can stay alive and keep moving because
they have nerve tissue agglomerations in
each body segment providing basic
nervous functions responsible for
reflexes so basically you could rip them
apart but I thought you were talking
about quality of life that’s very very
different you’re right they very sad
yeah okay all right
there are tree mites that when
threatened fuse together to form a
larger tree might to scare off predators
sure oh I’m gonna say false because tree
mites naturally hate each other they
don’t like to work together but much
like a juggling family like a circus
family well they all hate each other but
they still tumble around together
same thing I see so you’re all saying
that tree mites like get on top of each
other put on a big like cloak like it’s
one tall dude yeah I’m saying that I saw
the movie Finding Nemo and in that movie
all the fish come together in
make an arrow and they make a thing and
so I’m going I’m going off Pixar okay
you know what that is though fish
these are tree mites slightly different
creatures now they do it because they’re
mites they’re really small they’re like
look we may not like each other but
we’re gonna get eaten if we don’t look
like we’re something remember in the
movie Independence Day everybody hated
each other right until the aliens came
down on each other Palestinians Israelis
huh yeah you know that’s the same thing
with tree mites this is our Independence
Day
