if you haven’t gone to Katmai you should
go and you should go to this place it’s
called Brooks camp ok this is where
you’ve all seen the shot where the bear
has its mouth open and the salmon is
jumping into it and so since that
picture has already been taken I had to
figure out some other way to shoot this
situation okay because the salmon are
jumping here and these guys have prime
spots and so I looked at this guy said
you know what I think I can make him
look like he’s in a hot tub and this is
my bear in a hot tub shot I like to
shoot slow shutter speed so after the
bear caught the fish you know I’ve tried
to move the camera with the head so that
only this part is sharp and the rest is
blurry this is the picture that ran I
love this picture these two bears you
know they’re they fight for prime spots
and they have cabins by the waterfalls
down there you have cabins you can stay
in this female bear she was very smart
and she said well if I come over near
the cabins to take a nap I know the
males aren’t going to come over here so
I was watching her I was over by the
cabin I was like here’s the cabin here
am i and I’m watching her and she comes
over and she lays down and she’s
sleeping and not very far away so I had
my long lens my 500 millimeter I’m on a
tripod and I sit and wait which is what
I do best and and so I’m sitting there
waiting I thought well maybe there’ll be
a shot when she wakes up the Cubs wake
up who knows what’s gonna happen
well this Ranger came over he looked at
me and he saw them and you’re supposed
to be like 50 yards away from them and
he starts yelling at me at the top of
his lungs you know screaming that I’m
too close to them well he wakes the
Bears up the Cubs stand up to see what
the yelling is about
I got this shot they wandered off I
thank the Ranger you gotta learn to work
with the National Park people you know
and there’s a spot on the coast there
where you can go and there’s a little
eco friendly camp and they bring
photographers there and the Bears are
just they’re really keyed in on the
salmon they’re really not interested in
you and you can get really close to the
Bears or actually the Bears get close to
you it’s up to them and so when I was
there actually had my son with me
usually with a group of you know
yourself and in this case my son and we
were with two other people and the bear
was pretty close well the guy next to me
breaks out his tuna sandwich I mean look
how close that bears and he’s looking at
that tuna sandwich and the guide goes I
think you should put the tuna sandwich
away and we were there and I just you
know I can just watch wild I love any
close encounter with a wildlife whether
it’s a squirrel or Cardinal or bears I
could just sit for hours and watch them
well my son you know he was probably 12
at that time 13 a little bored dad can
we go so I thought about how can I
engage him so I gave him my camera with
a long lens on it and 100 to 400 I set
it up so it would automatically focus
and automatically expose and I took the
wide-angle lens I thought well I’ll just
shoot some landscapes because I love
landscapes and the clouds were doing
some nice stuff and then these two bears
came by and this one you know stood up
on its hind legs and I nailed it with a
wide-angle and then I looked at Collins
shot he nailed it
with the 400 I said Colin we’re gonna
make some we’re gonna make some real
money with this picture his reply was
dad you can have the credit I want the
money and then four months afterwards
whenever I come home he’d be say dad did
that picture sell yet that pictures on
yeah so I told him I said you know
calling you’re kind of like a bear
whisperer no you can get him to do
anything so we were there for another
hour or two and he was happy and I
finally I said okay it’s time to go say
goodbye to the Bears so he waved to the
bear and wouldn’t you know it it way
back that’s his shot yeah so I take
Colin with me whenever I’m shooting
bears now
