invention comes out of inspiration when
you’re thinking about something you’re
not inspired unless you’re motivated you
start out noticing that things don’t
work as well as they should and it bugs
you and then you have an inspiration to
fix it I got to tell you genius is a
word that you guys keep throwing up for
me it’s diligence you’re a smart person
and you stick with it nowadays you know
I meet a lot of young engineers these
people are good at math no question so
but you get good at math by working at
it that is one of the most troubling
things about algebra I’m sorry everybody
it was hard for me too
you got to do your homework well I have
some inventions that will of course
improve the quality of life for so many
people I have the improved ballet toe
shoe which has a ridge to hold the
ballerinas phalanges it’s not something
that a lot of people feel they need but
I could not help myself when I was at
the Pacific Northwest Ballet and all
these young women had all these crazy
injuries yeah I have another pet on the
throw tech trainer which gets you to
throw a ball by turning and turning your
hand before you throw which is really
important and engages these muscles here
as engineers this is what we dream of is
making quality of life for people better
using science everybody who likes to say
science did this take god science is
people people are scientists people do
science people who created the body of
knowledge we call science people use the
process of science as making an
observation come up with a hypothesis of
why it happens then try it in compared
to what you thought was gonna happen
that process has changed the world
so that is inherently creative make an
observation you come up with something
from scratch de novo like why did that
happen to me science and art or like
this I don’t want one without the other
tutored kids in the inner-city people’s
butts called at-risk
and I point out that science is true for
everybody it doesn’t matter your
ancestry your facial features cover your
skin what you’re going to discover is
true for everyone and so it’s a real
opportunity to advance
