Behind the Scenes of the Event Horizon | Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey

National Geographic Channel presents an
exclusive deeper dive into cosmos the
black hole sequence is where the ship of
the imagination really pays off because
you can talk about the black hole and
the event horizon but it’s a whole
different experience when you’re on a
ship and you’re in it I love the black
hole sequence and just the drama of
plunging into the black hole but at the
same time seeing the spectacular VFX
that really make feel like there’s
something dreamlike is the only way I
can describe it we had to come up with
some effects that would show how these
are the world just gets around the black
hole we knew we wanted to give you that
sense that he was being stretched across
time and across space so Neil is in the
captain’s chair and he’s making kind of
the faces that he’s making on the screen
that you’re seeing but then from there
we manipulate the image in 2d and in 3d
and stretch it and shake it so you
really feel like you’re in some
otherworldly part of space and we wanted
to have a dramatic end point for the
sequence so we’re approaching the black
hole we’re not quite going in and time
is being distorted and the image is
being distorted and then we go in and
then it gets really crazy
well black holes are fascinating
everybody who studies astronomy every
kid who learns about black holes they
want to know what happens inside a black
hole and that is a realm of speculation
at this point but there’s also a lot of
research that feeds into what we think a
black hole might be but speculation is a
big part of what we do as scientists we
dream about what things might be going
on in areas that we just don’t
understand yet and that’s what motivates
the questions and the research that lead
to our greater understanding down the
road
