Back to School (Ep. 9) | Beyond the Puck

today we are visiting Hingham high
school and beautiful hang of mass we’ve
been working really hard here at hingham
high school for a number of years to
really try to raise students awareness
about environmental issues we thought
about inviting Andrew Ference out to the
high school I had read in the newspaper
and knew from following the Bruins how
interested he was in environmental
issues and right from the get-go he
expressed some real enthusiasm for
coming out here crazy school the biggest
thing for me is is that environmentalism
is it i think it’s an overused word you
know that word becomes extinct because
it really should just be called you know
common sense and being normal
look I think it’s great that he’s using
the platform of his fame and popularity
as an NHL player particularly here where
somebody coming down who wears a Bruins
uniform really means a lot I’m the bees
for a while yes it’s an inspiration for
me I’m such huge hog with himself I’ve
been looking forward to this all weekend
it’s really cool to meet him okay guys
hey I’m Andrew I’m old I’m 33 and I
started doing all this eco stuff back
when I was growing up my parents
composted and my first job was
collecting all the bottles from the
neighborhood of getting money for them
so I’m not really you know jumping on to
this thing late in the game I just kind
of continued what my parents taught me
so in our league there’s 700 guys
obviously we travel all over the world
and one thing that we started was a
carbon-neutral challenge we added up all
of our travel bus planes hotel stays and
said here’s how much co2 every player in
the NHL produces and we worked with some
environmentalists so that we would be
producing as much energy as we’re
throwing out in the air what’s your
favorite thing about being in
this isn’t like working with the other
people is a trying new foods or having
company send you the new products I love
meeting the people that are sticking
their necks out and starting new
companies probably one of the coolest
things I’ve seen so far as MIT they have
energy Expo there’s everything from new
batteries to biofuel being made out of
algae you see somebody that’s working so
hard to do something right and to make a
difference it makes me optimistic and
gives me gives me hope that more people
are you know going the right path I
think that if other athletes are the
fans you know at home see that you’re
actively doing something good then I
think it makes people stop and you know
look at what they’re doing as well and
that’s just as powerful as the actual
act itself since you brought it up a
couple of our guys are actually working
with some MIT grad students oh yeah on
that same biofuel yeah that’s awesome
Mac so that’s how you guys are working
on right now tell me about it basically
the whole idea is if you’re like lipids
in the algae and when you break the
cells the lipids get released and those
can be refined into diesel or gasoline
see you guys are the future billionaires
that I was talking about
hopefully I think it’s really cool that
you came to our class and showed us what
he does on a daily basis for the
environment you think about influential
teachers that you’ve had when you’re a
kid and I still remember the class where
I really learned about the water cycle I
think it really showed me how everything
is connected and how one thing affects
another and I remember being very young
and somehow this light bulb coming on
and so I think the way you grow up
things you learn about the experiences
you have when you’re younger are so
powerful for developing you know who you
are as an adult and there’s ever a
school visit kind of drop anything and
and I definitely do it i think that
there’s no excuse not to especially with
with all the stink i make about it okay
thanks so here’s you guys had a good
ride yeah that’s very cool I’ve never
known before you wanna fight lol scared
I start pedaling and you start walking
why is this enol wobbly that’s so cool
your brakes they’re really spooky so we
want to go back to high school
