Ainissa Ramirez for Nat Geo’s Expedition Granted | National Geographic

my name is anissa Ramirez and I’m a
material scientist I got the idea that I
wanted to be a scientist since I was
four I was watching a television show
and there was a little girl working on
problems solving things and I said I
want to do that I don’t know what that
is but I want to do that and then later
on I learned that word with science and
went to school and learn more about
science and learn the tools to explore
the world around me so what’s a
scientist what’s an explorer and
explorers a person who goes just beyond
the edge of what everyone knows
everyone’s knowledge and it’s a scary
point but it’s also thrilling because
you’re gonna discover something for the
very first time I feel like I am
changing the world in my own corner and
that’s getting people excited about
science science has been on this ivory
tower most people feel distant from it
but what I’m trying to do is make it
more approachable and remind people that
science is something for them they used
to ask why all the time as kids but they
stop asking why as adults the way that
we teach science in the classroom that’s
not science consuming things passably
that’s not what scientists do scientists
connect the dots they explore they
investigate they have a question that
they’re trying to solve get kids to do
that to act more like a scientist give
them a question that’s interesting to
them you teach them how to connect the
dots that it’s okay to fail and that
being curious is number one that’s how
you make science curiosity is huge it’s
one of the things that makes us human
that’s the reason why we were able to
explore different countries go to the
moon mostly because of curiosity so
curiosity is one of our innately human
aspects and I think it’s very very
important that we nurture that because
that’s what’s gonna make us create in
the next generation I think the most
important thing we need to do is figure
out what we’re passionate about let that
be your compass that will point you in
the direction that you need to go at

limits to wear what you can explore
