successful person has to do including
you believe it or not every successful
person in this world as junk I’m gonna
tell you what I mean by that eventually
you are going to have to jump
you cannot just exist in this life you
have got to try to live if you are
waking up thinking that it’s got to be
more to your life than it is man believe
that it is believe in your heart of
hearts that it is but to get to that
life you go ahead to jail I’ll tell you
why I call it jump see God when he
created all of us he gave every last one
of us
a gift at Birth he never created a soul
without endowing them with a gift
you just got to quit looking at gifts us
running jumping singing dance it’s more
than that he said you know how to
network you can connect dots draw we
teach some of y’all Fried Chicken better
than anybody else baked pie some of you
cut hair color hair some people do grass
I got a parka man never wanted to go out
with his clothes we stayed out too late
come on man wrong with now I got to get
a barely mom cut miss Johnson Fred we
kept laughing at this dude cutting grass
you got a landscaping company a clean
one full million dollars because all he
do is cut grass but he was gifted at I
got a partner on a detail shop make
$800,000 a year detailing cars he got
six mobile trucks worth $800,000 easy
all he do detail that’s his gift that’s
what he loves to do
you’ve got to identify that deal now
listen to me when you see people in life
when you’re standing on the cliff of
life you see people soaring by and you
see people soaring going to exotic
places you hear about them doing
wonderful things maybe you look up the
street in your neighbor just gets a car
every year there between you your highs
in doing it have you ever thought maybe
this person right here has identified
their gift and it’s living in their gift
because your Bibles say this this your
Bible says your gift will make room for
you your gift not your education you’re
gonna get an education that’s nice but
if you don’t use your guilt that
education on gonna take you so far I
know a lot of people got degrees man
that he ain’t even using it’s your gift
but the only way for you to soar is you
got to jump you got to take that gift
that’s packed away on your back you got
to jump off that cliff and pull that
cord that gift opens up and provides the
soul if you don’t ever use it you’re
gonna just go to work and if you getting
up going to work on a job every day that
you hate going to that ain’t living man
you just existed at one point in time
you ought to see what living is like but
the only way to see what living like you
got a jump hit a problem
but just be real when you first jump let
me tell you something the parachute will
I’m sorry I wish I could tell you a deal
but they don’t when you jump is not
going to open right away you’re gonna
hit them rocks you’re gonna get some
skin to off on the cliffs you’re gonna
get all your clothes tall you’re gonna
get some cuts on you you’re gonna be
bleeding pretty bad but eventually
eventually the parachute has to open it
has to open man but you gotta jump
though now here’s another thing you can
play it safe and deal without the cuts
and the tears and you can stand on that
cliff for life forever safe but if you
don’t jump
I got another promise I can make your
parachute you never you’ll never know
you never know what God really has see
your God has wonderful life once again
I’m gonna refer to your Bible you go
down there you memorize these scriptures
you don’t apply them to yourself your
Bible says that he comes to give you
life and give you life more abundantly
if I were you I would jump because
that’s the only way to get to that
abundant life you got to jump man you
got to take a chance
now when I get through talking there
those are you to discuss this in the car
well I got bills and I got I got bills
whether you stay on the cliff or you
jump you’re gonna have bills well if I
quit my job I’m a rule in my credit if
you got a job you live in check the
check even if you got a one credit you
can’t buy nothing else no damn way at
one point I meant do yourself a favor
ghost go see what God really do God hold
you up man he gonna let you fall
he bring you this far let you fuck do
you some faith man before you leave this
work before you die jump just jump one
time just jump three years ago I went I
went skydiving in Dubai right and
skydiving skydiving is a really
interesting confront with fear right so
so I guess I gotta stand up so so all
your friends what happens you go out
have you oh sorry drop my thing so what
happens is you go out the night before
and you you know you take a drink with
your friends and somebody says yeah we
should go skydiving tomorrow and you go
yeah we’ll go skydiving yeah yeah yeah
right and you go home but you by
yourself you like peeing right you’re
like well I mean they was drunk too
right so so maybe maybe they not maybe
maybe I mean we don’t have to go we all
have to do it so then that night you’re
laying in your bed and you just get good
and you’re terrified you keep imagining
over and over again jumping out of an
airplane you can’t figure out why you
would do that right and you’re laying
there you have the worst night’s sleep
of your life but you still have the hope
that your friends were drunk right so
you wake up the next day and you go you
know down and you say where you were
going meet and everybody’s there you’re
like alright cool cool right so you get
in the van and you don’t know that your
friends had the same night that you had
cuz they’re pretending like they didn’t
like yeah and then my uncle’s a Navy
SEAL and you know this is gonna be great
I’m looking forward to this he’s like oh
my god oh my god and your stomach is
terrible you can’t eat and everything
but you don’t want to be the only punk
who doesn’t jump out of this airplane so
you get there and then you have this
safety brief and you’re standing there
and the guys to tell you what the chute
doesn’t open what’s gonna happen is you
nobody would walk won’t get up but the
shoe the shoe wouldn’t open right so you
do a thing and what you do is your first
jump you’re attached to a guy who is got
you know he’s going to walk you out so
you go and you get there and there’s an
airplane and nobody stopping everybody’s
still going so you get onto their
airplane and you’re sitting there and
and you know it’s extra because you’re
sitting on some dudes lap some stranger
and it’s not you know you got trying to
make small talk yeah man so you deal
you’d be you be jumping with people all
the time you know so and then you just
want to make sure you got you got kids
right you got people you need to see
right just want to make sure he’s
serious right so you get in there so
everything’s normal so you fly and you
go up you go up you go up you go up to
14,000 feet and you notice there’s a
light it’s red and it’s yellow and green
right so right now the lights red so
then you start thinking at some point
the lights going to go green because you
don’t know what’s going to happen right
and you wait and it goes yellow and the
light goes green and somebody opens the
door and in that moment you realize
you’ve never been in a fricking airplane
with the door open right terror go sorry
I’m spit
sorry terror terror terror terror right
so you go and then you know if you’re if
you were smart you sat in the back so
you don’t go first
right and then people start going out of
the airplane and you go and the guy
walks you up to the end of the thing and
you’re standing and your toes are on the
edge and you’re looking out down to
death and they say on three and they say
one two and he pushes you on to because
people grab one three right and you go
and you fall out of the airplane and in
one second you realize that it’s the
most blissful experience of your life
you’re flying right it doesn’t feel like
falling right it’s like this you
actually are kind of held a little bit
by the wind and then you start and you
you start falling you’re falling and you
there’s zero fear you realize that the
point of maximum danger is the point of
minimum fear its bless it’s bliss and
right and you’re doing it and then 20
seconds 25 seconds 40 seconds and you
have enough time to just kind of like oh
[Music]
right you start doing all of that and
the the lesson for me was why were you
scared in your bed the night before why
did you what do you need that fear for
just don’t go why are you scared in your
bed
16 hours before you jump why are you
scared in the car why could you not
enjoy breakfast what what did you need
it if fear is fear of what you’re
nowhere near the airplane everything’s
up to the stepping out there’s actually
no reason to be scared it only just
ruins your day you don’t have to jump
and then in that moment all of a sudden
where you should be terrified is the
most blissful experience of your life
and God place the best things in life on
the other side of Terror on the other
side of your maximum fear or all of the
best things in life you know miss
Litella as partnerships help changing
the world and just being part of
something that’s inspired my business
people on top whenever they talk about
money you can ask the mother I I don’t
want to hear it but if they bring an
idea to me that I think is gonna go to
the next level most of the time if I
follow my heart and everything else will
fall in place I’ve never ever done a
deal and we got this suit company we
throw some pinstripes in the suit you
give me out a thousand we sell a
twentieth when we make I’ve never done a
deal where it was always based on money
what was did my business deals based on
how I felt it was gonna go in the future
how I felt it was gonna help and inspire
somebody say now don’t you ever tell me
it’s something that you can do you don’t
try to build a wall you don’t set out to
build a wall you don’t say I’m gonna
baked it no the biggest baddest greatest
wall that’s ever been built you don’t
start there you say I’m gonna lay this
brick
as perfectly as a brick can be laid and
you do that every single day let’s
assume you have a wall you could either
live your dreams or live your fears and
I think the majority of people actually
are not living their dreams but are
living their fears so I want to ask you
a question what are your fears what are
you afraid of
what are you scared of because we all
have fears don’t we we all have
something that’s blocking us that’s
holding us back and as we begin to look
at life what we realize is that the
reason that most people are not living
out their true potential and not doing
all of the things that they would really
like to do is because of fear some
people called fear false evidence or
expectations appearing real on your own
you know that’s kind of the point I
think people you know most businesses
fail to begin in the first few years so
there you are on your own what do you
think were the keys to success those
first few years by yourself
obsession without a more value than
anybody else ever dreamed of I mean my
entire life from the very beginning days
was how do I do more for others than
anyone else on earth how do I give them
experiences that are lasting how do I
create change what change was impossible
I’m going to take somebody from the
therapy for seven years in an hour
produced that result and the way I did
that was by challenging traditional
psychologists and psychiatrists and
getting on national radio and saying
given you were stationed on handle in an
hour which was pretty abrasive you know
as a young kid you can get by with that
stuff but the best part was I backed it
up and so one of the first interventions
I did was in Vancouver British Columbia
Canada on the radio and this like I just
got on the phone and just on the radio
why they’re just passionate you are a
liar you’re a charlatan people like you
should not be loud on the radio and I
said sir I said I said are you you know
scientists used to the course of a
physician I said well scientists would
never make an app sumption I said you’ve
never met me right now we’ve never met
quiet snow and you’re calling me a liar
on national radio I said she must be
stating your hypothesis your hypothesis
is that my why I’m a charlatan and if
you’re staying hypothesis and you’re
truly a scientist you got a new one to
test it am i right yeah yeah it’s great
I’m doing a free guest event at the
Holiday Inn tomorrow night
anyone hearing my voice can come I’m
going to a series of demonstrations and
I’m gonna take one of your clients and
turn around I said share with me
somebody that you’ve never been able to
change I said I’m sure you got plenty of
those you wanna play hardball because
wait a lot of patients aren’t ready to
change and I said I haven’t found any
course I’ve done three therapies totally
a long story short he told me this woman
he’d been working on for seven years
what a snake phobia a Foley is not just
a fear it’s a funny control response to
fear so like she dreamed the snake would
bite her on the face and then the
adrenaline shoots her body awake around
there’s a nap in four to seven times a
night seven years so you know he was put
in the corner and so he brought her down
her it took me about 15 minutes at the
end of it I tested first when she was
trained in shaking and then I wrapped
the snake around her and that changed my
entire career because in that moment
everything there was no question
everybody saw this woman is transformed
I said you can’t read but that’s like
titrant how many years then I took on
sports stars that I can’t turn around
you know I did some work with Mother
throughout the years in business I found
something which was I always asked why
you do things and the answers you
invariably get are oh that’s just the
way it’s done nobody knows why they do
what they do
nobody thinks about things very deeply
in business that’s what I found I’ll
give you an example when we were
building our Apple ones in the garage we
knew exactly what they cost when we got
into a factory in the Apple two days the
accounting had this notion of a standard
cost where you’d kind of set a standard
cost and then at the end of a quarter
you’d adjust it with a variance and I
kept asking why did we do this and the
answer was well that’s just the way it’s
done and after about six months of
digging into this what I realized was
the reason you do it is because you
don’t really have good enough controls
to know how much it costs so you guess
and then you fix your guess at the end
of the quarter and the reason you don’t
know how much it cost is because your
information says
those aren’t good enough so but nobody
said it that way and so later on when we
designed this automated factory for
Macintosh we were able to get rid of a
lot of these antiquated concepts and
know exactly what something cost to the
second so in business a lot of things or
I call it folklore they’re done because
they were done yesterday and the day
before and so what that means is is if
you’re willing to sort of ask a lot of
questions and think about things and
work really hard you can learn business
pretty fast what am i holding on to what
fears that I’m a lying to imprison me
it’s keeping me from breaking out that’s
keeping me from living up to my true
potential that’s keeping me from really
being happy that’s keeping me from
having a sense of adventure and
excitement in my life what’s what’s
keeping me from controlling my destiny
fears and I’m giving that permission to
notice what I said and we must give our
permission to fear to immobilize us
because whatever discomfort you
experience whatever challenges a
difficulty that it is you got to have
got to go up in there and wrestle with
will it be easy no well it being
challenging yes friend of mine who’s
going into recovery
he’s been addicted to crack cocaine for
years and alcohol he was talking about
how challenging it was and while he was
dreading going on going into cold turkey
I said what do you want me to tell you
that it’s gonna be a picnic no it’s not
he’s gonna kick your button yes it is
are you gonna want to die yes yes that’s
a part of it but that’s just what you
must go through in order to get where
you want to go and guess what you are
strong enough to do it you’re strong
enough and your life is worth whatever
you have to go through to get past this
addiction whatever you have to do this
dream you’ve got whatever you want to do
will it be easy to just run out then do
it no will it happen overnight now what
a bit struggle yes
will there be times when you can’t make
ends meet yes that’s a part of it will
there be times you won’t know what to do
yes that’s a part of it well you have
some opposition well things go wrong
sometimes it’s spent only in one
industry which is this one and but I’ve
been in it now for about 15 years and
I’ve seen a lot of people make a lot of
things I’ve seen a lot of people fail a
lot of things and my my point of view on
this or my observation is that the doers
are the major thinkers the people that
really create the things that change
this industry are both the thinker doer
in one person and if we really go back
and we examine
you know did Leonardo have a guy off to
the side that was thinking five years
out in the future what he would paint or
the technology he would use to paint it
of course not Leonardo was the artist
but he also mixed all his own paints he
also was a fairly good chemist knew
about pigments knew about human anatomy
and combining all of those skills
together the art and the science the
thinking and the doing was what resulted
in the exceptional result and there is
no difference in our industry the people
that really made the contributions have
been the thinkers and the doers and when
you when you a lot of people of course
it’s it’s very easy to take credit for
the thinking the doing is more concrete
but somebody it’s very easy for somebody
say oh I thought of this three years ago
but usually when you dig a little deeper
you find that the people that really did
it we’re also the people that really
work through the hard intellectual
problems as well you don’t have to
necessarily have done anything wrong for
things to get completely out of control
it’s a terrifying doctrine but it’s not
a hopeless doctrine because it still
says that there’s a way forward there’s
a pathway forward and the pathway
forward is to adopt a mode of being that
has some nobility so that you can
tolerate yourself and perhaps even have
some respect for yourself as someone
who’s capable of standing up in the face
of that terrible vulnerability and
suffering and that the pathway forward
as far as the existentialists are
concerned is by well certainly by the
avoidance of deceit particularly in
language but also by the adoption of
responsibility for the conditions of
existence and some attempt on your part
to actually rectify them and the thing
that’s so interesting about that is no
up to as far as I’m concerned and some
of this is from clinical experience you
know if you take people and I’ve told
you this and you expose them voluntarily
to things that they are avoiding and are
afraid of you know that they know they
need to overcome in order to meet their
goals their self defined goals if you
can teach people to stand up in the face
of the things they’re afraid of they get
stronger and you don’t know what the
upper limits to that are because you
might ask yourself like if for ten years
if you didn’t avoid doing what you knew
you needed to do by the depth by your
own definitions right within the values
that you’ve created to the degree that
you’ve done that what would you be like
well you know there are remarkable
people who come into the world from time
to time and there are people who do find
out over decades long periods what they
could be like if they were who they were
if they said if they spoke their being
forward and they’d be get stronger and
stronger and stronger and we don’t know
the limits to that we do not know the
limits to that and so you could say well
in part perhaps the reason that you’re
suffering unbearably can be left at your
feet because you’re not everything you
could be and you know it and of course
that’s a terrible thing to admit and
it’s a terrible thing to consider but
there’s real promise in it right because
it means that perhaps there’s another
way that you could look at the world in
a number another way that you could act
in the world so what it would reflect
back to you would be much better than
what it reflects back to you now my
experience is with people that were
probably running at about 51% of our
capacity something mean you can think
about this yourselves I often ask
undergraduates how many hours a day you
waste or how many hours a week you waste
and the classic answer is something like
4 to 6 hours a day
you know inefficient studying watching
things on YouTube that not only do you
not want to watch that you don’t even
care about that make you feel horrible
about watching after you’re done that’s
probably four hours right there know
what you think well that’s 2025 hours a
week it’s a hundred hours a month that’s
two and a half full work weeks it’s half
a year of work weeks per year and if
your time is worth twenty dollars an
hour which is a radical under estimate
it’s probably more like 50 if you think
about it in terms of deferred wages if
you’re wasting 20 hours a week
you’re wasting fifty thousand dollars a
year and you are doing that right now
and it’s because you’re young wasting
fifty thousand dollars a year is a way
bigger catastrophe than it would be for
me to waste it because I’m not gonna
last nearly as long and so if your life
isn’t everything it could be you could
ask yourself well what would happen if
you just stop wasting the opportunities
that are in front of you you be who
knows how much more efficient 10 times
more efficient 20 times more efficient
that’s the Pareto distribution you have
no I
dear how efficient efficient people get
it’s completely off its off the charts
well and if we all got our act together
collectively and stop making things
worse because that’s another thing
people do all the time not only do they
not do what they should to make things
better they actively attempt to make
things worse because they’re spiteful or
resentful or arrogant or deceitful or or
homicidal or genocide alors all of those
things all bundled together in an
absolutely pathological package if
people start really really trying just
to make things worse we have no idea how
much better they would get just because
of that so there’s this weird dynamic
that’s part of the existential system of
ideas between human vulnerability social
judgment both of which are major causes
of suffering and the failure of
individuals to adopt the
responsibilities that they know they
should adopt it isn’t merely that your
fate depends on whether or not you get
your act together and to what degree you
decide that you’re going to live out
your own genuine being it isn’t only
your fate it’s the fate of everyone that
you’re networked with and so you know
you think well there’s nine billion
seven billion people in the world we’re
going to peak at about 9 billion by the
way and then it’ll decline rapidly but 7
billion people in the world and who are
you you’re just one little dust mote
among that 7 billion and so it really
doesn’t matter what you do or don’t do
but that’s simply not the case it’s the
wrong model because you’re at the center
of a network you’re a node in a network
of course that’s even more true now that
we have social media you’ll you know
you’ll know a thousand people at least
over the course of your life and they’ll
know a thousand people each and that
puts you one person away from a million
and two persons away from a billion and
so that’s how you’re connected and the
things you do there like dropping is
stolen in a pond the ripples move
outward and they affect things in ways
that you can’t fully comprehend and it
means that the things that you do and
that you don’t do are far more important
than you think and so if you act that
way of course the terror of realizing
that is that it actually starts to
matter what you do and you
say well that’s better than living a
meaningless existence it’s better for it
to matter but I mean if you really ask
yourself would you be so sure if you had
the choice I can live with no
responsibility whatsoever the price I
pay is that nothing matters or I can
reverse it and everything matters but I
have to take the responsibility that’s
associated with that it’s not so obvious
to me that people would take the
meaningful path now when you say well
denialists suffered dreadfully because
there’s no meaning in their life and
they still suffer yeah but the
advantages they have no responsibility
so that’s the payoff and I actually
think that’s the motivation say well I
can’t help being nihilistic all my
belief systems have collapsed it’s like
yeah maybe maybe you’ve just allowed
them to collapse because it’s a hell of
a lot easier than acting them out and
the price you pay is some meaningless
suffering but you can always whine about
that and people will feel sorry for you
and you have the option of taking the
pathway of the martyr so that’s a pretty
good deal all things considered
especially when they are when the
alternative is to bear your burden
properly and to live forthrightly in the
world well what Solzhenitsyn figured out
and so many people in the 20th century
it’s not just him even though he’s the
best example is that if you live a
pathological life you pathologize your
society and if enough people do that
then it’s hell really really and you can
read the Gulag Archipelago if you have
the four tit fortitude to do that and
you’ll see exactly what hell is like and
then you can decide if that’s a place
you’d like to visit or even more
importantly if it’s a light if it’s a
place you’d like to visit and take all
your family and friends because that’s what happened in the 20th century
