everything that we do in the business
world is focused on making money that’s
what indicate indicator that you try to
assess how successful we are in the
business world there’s nothing else so
that kind of squeezed out all kinds of
social orientation of human life and
human activity and that’s not a terrible
situation and that untenable situation
is created by the structure that we have
I said business doesn’t have to be
always money center always self centered
always or many times obsessed with money
because human beings is not they are not
always about money human beings is much
bigger than just money making machine we
are not robots we are human beings we
take care of ourselves individually at
the same time we take care of everybody
else we take care of the planet itself
and business world doesn’t have that
orientation so at the moment we can do
that we can create a different kind of
business which is not money centered to
focus to develop your skills the guy was
was the new owner of a team a team a
baseball team that was in the basement
of the league when he took it over he
went to the picture and he says what is
your best throat he said well I got a
good curveball and I’ve got a good
fastball he went on talking about his
different throws he said but tell me
this what is your best throw he thought
for a moment he said I’ve got a good
fastball he said that’s all I want you
to work on nothing else just develop
your fastball the next year they went to
the World Series
most people don’t know where their
fastball is most people go through life
never discovering what their talents are
most people never develop their talents
they have skills and abilities but if
you don’t nurture them if you don’t
develop them they will never serve you
your gifts can take you many places if
you develop your gifts most of us don’t
like to do those things that come too
easy to us I’ve always loved to talk to
people I decided taking this advice to
develop my skills as a
speaker and my gift has developed and
has taken me many places you have
something that you brought to the
universe and that if you decide that my
life deserves my developing this what I
do well and becoming the best at it and
mastering myself and seeing what I have
within me if you decide to drop your
buckets where you are and develop your
gifts I grant you you will never ever be
without I grant you that your gifts will
take you places that will literally
amaze you I grant you that if you begin
to work to develop your gifts you
develop a strong sense of happiness
you’ll get a larger vision of yourself
because part of beginning to get a
larger vision of yourself all of us need
some area of our lives where we can have
a feeling of competence that people know
when they think about this area that’s
something you do that you eat and sleep
that and that you do that you do that
and people know it and you know it and
you know that you know that you know
this if you don’t know anything else you
know this can you tell I know I know
what I’m doing hello you know this so
you’ve got to work on it
for me it was it was so much fun to me
to sit in my room and make faces and
talk to myself in different voices and
in things and they’re gone it looks like

you know and then I just sit for hours
doing that and and my parents were so
worried they would you know they would
say you know my mother tried to scare me
with the spiritual thing you know it’s
just like if you don’t stop doing that
you’re gonna see the devil know that
kind of thing and and I of course that
you know that just made me do it more I
mean I got a lot of support from my
parents that’s the one thing that I
always appreciated is that they didn’t
tell me I was being stupid they told me
I was being funny mm-hmm that was the
difference when you were 15 your father
took you to a comedy club to perform
yeah
my mother dresses me in a polyester suit
tells me you know this is what all the
boys are wearing and sends me down there
my father helped me write my act and and
I I went down to the comedy club and the
owner of the club had this little thing
that he liked to do where he would stand
backstage with a microphone and all
kinds of fun effects and you know heckle
new comedians and so when I got up there
it was just horrendous he was like
backstage going totally totally totally
boring
they were playing you know excerpts from
Jesus Christ Superstar like you know
crucify him crucify him crucify that
kind of thing so you know when you go
through a few of those experiences you
kind of develop a thick skin when it
comes to being ridiculed or whatever
where didn’t you give it up I couldn’t I
I mean I don’t have a trade you will go
through things and while you’re going
through them you can’t understand why
it’s happening to you but after you go
through it you get back and you look at
it and you say oh now I understand why I
needed that lesson have you ever
happened to you is that if you ever
happen to you that that I did I couldn’t
understand it there but after I got
through it then I saw that that was
preparing me for bigger and better
things
but as you go through the challenges of
life and you look at it and embrace
whatever comes to you don’t run from it
step toward it don’t try and duck it
like most people do see most people want
it easy see if you either come easy what
easy go see but when you go at what
you’re going to deal with and you deal
with the difficult difficulties of it
when you handle those hard things close
at hand making those hard decisions
right now that you don’t want to make
learning those things that you don’t
like to do but you know that in order
for you to get where you want to go this
is one of the hoops that you have to
flip through and I’m saying to you
whatever you got to do do it because if
you don’t life is gonna whip you until
you surrender and say okay all right all
right all right all right cooperating
okay I’ll learn okay ahead and wear me
out a long time so if it’s hard to do it
hard the great companies had a vision
that had a higher purpose beyond just
money or profits or being number one in
a market and kind of the irony there is
that by not making profits the number
one priority of the company or the
higher purpose of the company it
actually enabled these companies to make
generate more profits in the long term
so sometimes when I speak at
entrepreneur conferences I get asked
what’s a good market to get into where
it can make a lot of money and my
response is amiss instead of thinking
about where you can make a lot of money
think about what are you so passionate
about doing that you’d be happy doing it
for 10 years and even if you never made
a dime and that’s what you should be
doing and kind of the ironic thing is
the money will actually follow so you
know we’ve all heard of Craigslist he
didn’t set out to make money he was
passionate about the community and now
it’s one of the top trafficked websites
on the internet so I like to say I chase
the vision not the money there was a
movie that came
I think a couple years ago I called
notorious I think it only lasted a week
in the movie theater but but I saw it
and in it biggie smalls also known as
notorious b.i.g is well Puff Daddy says
to biggie smalls don’t chase the paper
chase the dream I just want an excuse to

you’re an entrepreneur say think about
what would you be so passionate about
doing that you’d be happy doing it for
10 years even if you never made a dime
from it and if you have employees I’m
out what’s the larger vision and greater
purpose in their work beyond just money
or profits or being number one in a
market as you begin to challenge
yourself you’ll discover some things
about yourself that you don’t know right
now the other thing is you begin to look
at yourself look at your dreams it and
and begin begin to experiment and
stepping in to your greatness what are
the things that’s very important
whatever goals and dreams that you have
repeat after me please make your move

instructed in in life to walk by faith
and not by sight see you want to really
begin to stretch yourself you want to
become a risk-taker you want to raise

grow and if you cannot grow you cannot
become your best and if you cannot
become your best you can’t be happy and
if you can’t be happy then what else is
there I like what Helen Keller said life
is short and unpredictable eat the
dessert first and so you want to begin
to take some chances you want to begin
to challenge yourself and make it okay
to fail and learn from your failures
don’t allow fear of failure and the
allure the attractiveness of playing it
safe in life to draw you in
you are unusually fearless and willing
to go in the face of other people
telling you something that’s crazy
and I know a lot of pretty crazy people
you still stand out where does that come
from or how do you think about making a
decision when everyone tells you this is
a crazy idea where do you get the
internal strength to do that
I’m office well I’d say I actually think
I feel feel fair quite strongly so it’s
not as though I just have the absence of
fear I’ve I feel it quite strongly but
there were times when if something is
important enough you believe in it
enough that you do it in spite of the
fear so speaking of important things
like people shouldn’t think III I should
if you should think well I feel fear
about this and therefore I shouldn’t do
it it’s normal to be to feel fair like
you’d have to definitely something
mentally wrong you shouldn’t feel fair
so you just feel it and let the
importance of it drive you to do it
anyway yeah you know actually something
that can be helpful as fatalism some
degree if you just think it’s just
accept the probabilities then that
diminishes fear so

of success were less than 10% and I just
accepted that actually probably I would
just lose lose everything but that maybe
would make some progress if we could

lesson I got from my mentor Jim Rohn was
I asked my father worked two jobs
we were always broke we had no money for
food and we lived in a community we
moved to it’s just I thought they were
all rich and we’re on the other side of
the tracks it was a lower middle-class
but compared to where we live before
these people seem rich compared to us
I just didn’t understand it and Jim said
to me Tony it’s not about the value of
your soul it’s about the value of you in
the marketplace and your father’s skills
are not that valuable he used to take he
was an underground parking attendant and
he would take people’s ticket and make
change well the research now shows it’s
being done at Yale’s being done overseas
in England as well and they found that
40% of all jobs they project in the next
10 years are going to disappear because
of Technology it’s gonna be replaced by
an algorithm it’s gonna be changed you
know all these guys on Wall Street
you’re seeing all these algorithms take
over and they’re getting rid of all
these traders it’s changing radically
these in these hedge funds there’s 3
million truck drivers self-driving cars
are here in the next five years they
will be the standard certainly within
seven or eight years are you gonna hire
someone who can only work eight hours a
day and sometimes gets drunk or can make
a mistake when you can buy a machine
write down the Machine and be in a
position where it works 24 hours a day
driving but no one is telling these
drivers this and it’s they have to
retool now so technology is the biggest
challenge labor is less valuable because
of efficiencies with technology and it’s
gonna get better and better for
technology which is scary when you think
about what’s gonna happen for jobs so I
say to people you got to participate in
your own rescue
you’ve got to retool yourself the idea
of the Bernie Sanders has of providing
free education sounds wonderful but the
education he wants to do is community
college there are no skill sets in
Community College’s today for the most
part that are gonna prepare you for the
economy or a job that’s there so what is
that gonna do you’re just gonna waste
more money more time we need to retool
ourselves the government’s not gonna do
it for you as jari and strangest change
can be there were times when it was hard
to imagine that my life would be what it
is today especially the time when my son
and I were living in that bathroom maybe
remember that scene in the movie there
was a highly polished sheet metal piece
over a sink it wasn’t a mirror but it
served as a mirror and I had to wash
myself in that baby every day watch my
baby in this sink and had to ask myself
some very predictable questions what
happened why did this happen
why did that happen but the most
difficult question I had to get through
was how did I get here and the answer
was even more brutal the answer was I
drove here I had something to do with it
you can’t change something until you own
it so if you’re 50 plus and you’re
sitting out there and pointing fingers
at other people you can do that for a
long time but it’s hard to look at the
mirror and say how did I get here and
have the answer be I drove here I had
something to do with it it’s
uncomfortable to admit that well I made
some bad decisions I made some
investments I shouldn’t have made I had
something to do with it
well that man sold me that house with no
money down I should have told him what
he could do at that house huh when I
signed that adjustable rate mortgage we
all know these things only adjust
upwards no one’s ever gonna call you and
say guess what you go pay less for your
money your house next year angle happen
so the idea of I drove here is
empowering because the other side of it
is if I drove here that means I can
drive out of here I have to own it and
that bathroom I finally had to
understand what my mama used to say to
me where she would say boy to Calvary is
not coming
ain’t no backup I was 28 years old when
that part of my life happened change was
coming fast and you know what changes
everywhere all the time social change
technical logical change and the most
potent of all personal change the most
urgent question today is not so much as
what are my values and who are we the
urgent question on these times of
constant changes how exactly are you
going to navigate these new realities
put another way what are you going to do
thoughts that we have we think there are
thoughts so it makes it really hard to
change them and people meditate try to
not think
show me somebody thumb that successfully
consistently the potion hey everybody
the mind thinks thoughts but here’s the
distinction if I told you a hundred
years ago we’re gonna fly the moon and
back you would call me a lunatic that’s
where the term comes from people still
use it it doesn’t make any sense because
a lunatic is somebody thought we gotta
move back we’ve done it right I didn’t
know that but if I would have told you a
hundred years ago that there’s gonna be
a box in your pocket and you’re gonna
pull this thing out you’re gonna hit a
couple buttons and then it’s gonna
capture invisible waves that are
drifting around the earth and bring the
waves in and you’re gonna see somebody
on the other side of the earth and
you’re gonna talk to them you’re totally
nuts
thoughts are those invisible waves and
when you use your body in a certain way
if I sit like this I’m gonna channel I’m
gonna tap into a different channel those
waves than if I’m sitting like this
kinda like a TV set if I turn one
channel it might be a comedy channel I’m
gonna see a lot of laughter turn another
one it’s a horror channel turn another
channel it’s a romance channel this is
what changes which of those waves you
touch in so if you can start to realize
that your thoughts do you think are your
thoughts there’s nothing unique about
your boss they’ve been around for
thousands of years you’re just tapping
into them because of what you’re doing
with your body that makes you too
fearful or passion or too courageous or
whatever you’re feeling as you go in
those states you get different thoughts
so what I want people to see is that
learn how to just see those thoughts go
by it’s learning how to be entertained
by those thoughts because I have crazy
thoughts then but what I’ve gotten good
at is going look at that crazy thought
That’s not me that’s the mind not your
mind cuz if it’s you how do you change
you pretty hard but I really truly know
there’s I haven’t heard a thought come
out of you that’s original you’ve called
them your thoughts but they’re not
you’ve stolen them bayman around forever
when you see that it’s easier to let go
of them and letting go of those thoughts
is one of the ways that you free
yourself and then again the more you do
it just like a muscle you get better and
better and better and all of a sudden
they used to make you crazy or stressed
out or make how many things you’d be
worried about then never came to be and
some people their life is good so they
worry about other people they’re never
not worried right so it’s really just a
pattern if you want wealth real wealth
is not just money it’s emotion that’s
like what are we really after in money
you know I’m buddy you want piece of the
paper with this pictures of deceased
notables on it you want weaving money
we’ll give you think it’ll give you
freedom or security or stability or love
it won’t give you a lot it’ll get you
sex it won’t get you love right so
really what you’re after is the emotion
and so what I want people to get is the
emotion they want now and all it is is a
new habit it’s learning to discipline
this mind right by realizing the mind
thoughts are out there and letting them
float by and constantly coming back to
what can I love about this what can I
appreciate it’s like if you can learn to
love or at least appreciate start to
enjoy the things that used to get upset
about how much freedom would you have
how much more joy you dad and I know
people got billions of dollars I’ve
coached them who was like holy Sh they
live in scarcity all the time when man
I’ll never forget he’s screaming at his
wife I’m in the meat I mean I’m in the
house and he’s screaming his wife
because she spent some money on a bunch
of outfits and stuff like that he’s a
multi-billionaire he couldn’t spend all
his money in his lifetime and then he’s
totally upset at his daughters in her
20s who spent some money too and I’m
like I thought it was afterwards and I
said what do you do this for and what do
you do it for it he’s like well it’s
just it’s the principal thing I said no
the principal thing is do you love these
people and do you want them to have an
abundant life when you have you don’t
have one loss but you live like you’re
poor you know it’s like I finally got
through them but so many people that’s
what I say money doesn’t change you
money magnifies who you are so you want
to expand the depth of who you are and
free yourself from suffering by just
knowing it’s a pattern of thought and
you can change the power of the phone
baby steps count to as long as you’re
going forward and one day you had all
those baby steps up and you might be
surprised at where you can get to but
more importantly I remember something my
mom used to say to me every day she
would say son the Calvary ain’t coming
you got to do this yourself ain’t no
backup okay and then when you put those
two things together man
it wasn’t as hard to keep going forward
as you might think everything in my
world is based on coming up with the
outcome that will serve and then going
at it but most of the time your approach
going at it doesn’t work no one else
knows that but you know you can see it
doesn’t work so it’s constantly changing
your approach until you can get where
you want to go and I enter an audience
and I’m gonna give a talk of any sort I
do a huge amount homework in advance I
prepare I see is there but boom when I
stand up here I wouldn’t be sitting like
this I’m scanning constantly who I’m
looking for the people think it’s bull
I’m going to ask the people who got
dragged there I’m not looking for the
people clapping for me you know those
people will always be there and there’s
some people clap even if you’re terrible
so you don’t want to other people see
you make you feel good I’m looking for
who isn’t there so that I can reach them
so I can show them that there’s
something real here because you know
most people don’t know who I am they’d
see you know ten thousand people jumping
in a stadium and they go it’s just a big
motivational pump up I’ve never been a
motivator it’s never opened up I want
I’ve been about I think motivations
useful as like a warm bath you should
probably take a bath or a shower every
day but you need more than that you need
strategy and I but what I really believe
is energy most of us grew up and right
now most of you are learning and the
traditional style you did leave when
you’re in school you were trained to go
to your seat and be silent and be polite
and nice but the world we live in
today isn’t like that the world today if
somebody sits down and waits or someone
tell them what to do they’re in trouble
so my approach is constantly stimulating
and seeing what’s real getting people to
be raw and getting to truth you know
it’s corny as it is the truth sets us
free and we all can find our own truth
as long as we put ourselves an
environment where we don’t tolerate
anything less than that work for me
regarding balance between family and
business opportunities was always to be
mindful off in a tie family comes first
my child always came first if you’ve
managed your relationships properly that
business presentation you’re so
concerned about that big conference call
it that cannot happen without you on the
phone all those things can be
rescheduled the to son is going to have
one first baseball camp
the daughters going to have one first
dance recital and you gotta be there in
a tie family wins how you motivate key
employees I believe is number one you
gotta respect them you’ve gotta let them
grow and you gotta trust them and leave
them alone and you have to also show
them the opportunity to make more money
than they’ve ever made in their lives
all that combined that’s how you
motivate your key core employees I know
how important it is to try and take care
of your child is to pursue your career
that’s why we’ve had to be very flexible
here and regards to children it’s very
very important to to have an environment
where people who have children if they
need to can bring their child to work
but the deal is you know what if you can
bring you a little boy or a little girl
to work I can bring my dog and that’s
the deal I get inspiration from the
people that I meet when I’m on the road
200 days a year I get to see it meet and
hear from people who are doing
incredible things in their own lives and
not waiting for someone else to come and
do them I met a young person just two
weeks ago
darlin Charleston South Carolina that
had raised $30,000 to feed homeless
veterans in their community five dollars
at a time
by telling a story about Hakeem and how
important the key is to a family thirty
thousand dollars five dollars at a time
and the person that did it is 11 years
old those are the people that inspire me
I firmly believe this so I know it to be
a fact 50% of all the companies in the
fortune 500 were started in a bear
market or recession
this is the time to pursue greatness but
the key is you’ve got to be doing
something that you’re truly passionate
about
it could not be I just want to make
money
it can’t be there it’s gotta be
something that man the son can’t come up
suiting up in the morning because you
want to go do your thing
how do you know listen I was good today
but I want to be great what are the
metrics you use I mean is there data you
get back how do you improve well we have
all the social media data which we we
use big data to take a look at but I
also look at it individually because
there’s nuances that you pick up in that
way so I feed that look at that but my
biggest piece is watching the audience
and then you know every day of my life I
get feedback I’m walking down the street
a dozen people come and tell me these
beautiful stories that their life has
changed and very much like like she
shared earlier they’ll give me way too
much credit so I always straighten Kolob
you did this I’m glad I got to help and
I try to keep that balance with
everybody but my measurement is both
emotional state impact as well as
execution did they lose 20 pounds did
they go turn their business around you
know my business is organized around I
really wanna help people improve all the
qualities the areas of their life but
there’s about seven that matter the most
it’s your body it’s your emotions that
your relationships it’s the way you
manage time its finances it’s your work
and it’s the spiritual side of life and
so what I spent my life doing is
modeling people that are the best the
world you find a couple have been
together for 65 years in their 80s late
80s and they’re still making love and
passionate not just hanging out they’re
not lucky they’re doing something
different so I’m constantly finding
those patterns so that hopefully I can
compress decades in two days I can learn
from those decades of life experience
say that bring the answer here to myself
and others and see if the measurable
impact on oublie my favorite scene from
that whole movie directly related to
education it was not written as you saw
it the scene I’m referring to as the
scene that took place on the basketball
court our writer had a very dim dark
view of the world and when the little
boy said his dream was I’m going to
become a ballplayer the father said
forget that it had never happened I
couldn’t do it so you can’t do it
I went up to Will Smith on the set that
day and I said you can’t tell that to
that little boy because that’s not what
my mother told me you can’t tell him
what he cannot do we tore up the script
and what we wrote was and I’ve heard
from so many parents and especially
parents of children with special needs
I’ve heard from so many parents every
day I tell my son I tell my daughter
every day don’t ever let somebody else
tell you what you can’t do where
somebody else is saying
when somebody else is saying something
can’t be done which you got to hear them
saying as they can’t do it I’m here to
remind you that when people laugh if
your visions and ideas it’s only because
they don’t have their own visions and
ideas around what they’re supposed to do
with their life are their careers people
that don’t have any dreams for
themselves they tend to be dream killers
people that don’t have their own visions
they become vision killers they want
nothing more than to talk you out of
your own visions they don’t have dreams
for themselves they don’t have any hopes
they’re hopeless they’re uninspired
unmotivated
they have no dreams they have nothing
that they’re ambitious about but I want
to remind you to continue to dream and
dream big I have a habit of dreaming
with my eyes open
I get very inspired by the things I see
I’m inspired by architecture I’m
inspired by photography I’m inspired by
ideas I’m inspired by the idea that
someone can have a vision and if that
vision had stayed in their mind they
would have robbed the world of the
opportunity to experience that vision I
mean think about this as big as this is
the fact that it’s in the middle of the
street if they had kept this idea inside
their minds I wouldn’t be here to look
at it
or experience it this is the power of
this is the power of not allowing anyone
to laugh at you when you say I want to
build something a sculpture that can go
in the middle of the street and it can
be an iconic sculpture that will last
forever long after I’m dead and gone
this could be a sculpture that can stand
in the middle of a street here in the
streets of Paris and if this person who
built this would have allowed people to
talk to him out of their dreams and
their visions it wouldn’t be here for us
to see or experience my voice is gone we
had a sold-out show here in Paris I just
wanted to remind you to dream and dream
big and understand that your family and
friends and loved ones in most cases
boyfriends/girlfriends they will be the
first to try and talk you out of your
dreams your visions and ideas as to what
you’re supposed to do with your life
they will say who wants you when you’ve
already had two or three kids who wants
you when you put on all that weight who
wants you when you’re looking like this
and been through this and been through
that nobody’s interested in you nobody’s
checking for you they’ll laugh at you
they’ll call you names because they have
no dreams they have no hunger for
success
they don’t have an appetite they don’t
I want to win so bad my hunger and
appetite for success is intimidating it
scares the shit out of people I come up
with new visions and ideas every single
day and people around me say slow down
stop you’re doing too much your appetite
is too big I can’t help myself
I want to build I want to win I’m a
billionaire I was a I was a change air I
was a Dahlen air I was a thousandaire I
am a millionaire there’s only one step
left the billion I don’t think I’ll see
a trillion but I know I’ll see a billion

you have to be able to see what doesn’t
exist in order to be able to pull off or
achieve what in most people’s mind seems
to be impossible only those that can see
the invisible being able to see what’s
not there what is your vision what is
your idea what was that god-sent dream
only those that can see the invisible
have to be relentless you have to never
let off the gas never stop never quit
never allow anyone to talk you out of
the dream division and ideas that God has sent you
world is focused on making money that’s
what indicate indicator that you try to
assess how successful we are in the
business world there’s nothing else so
that kind of squeezed out all kinds of
social orientation of human life and
human activity and that’s not a terrible
situation and that untenable situation
is created by the structure that we have
I said business doesn’t have to be
always money center always self centered
always or many times obsessed with money
because human beings is not they are not
always about money human beings is much
bigger than just money making machine we
are not robots we are human beings we
take care of ourselves individually at
the same time we take care of everybody
else we take care of the planet itself
and business world doesn’t have that
orientation so at the moment we can do
that we can create a different kind of
business which is not money centered to
focus to develop your skills the guy was
was the new owner of a team a team a
baseball team that was in the basement
of the league when he took it over he
went to the picture and he says what is
your best throat he said well I got a
good curveball and I’ve got a good
fastball he went on talking about his
different throws he said but tell me
this what is your best throw he thought
for a moment he said I’ve got a good
fastball he said that’s all I want you
to work on nothing else just develop
your fastball the next year they went to
the World Series
most people don’t know where their
fastball is most people go through life
never discovering what their talents are
most people never develop their talents
they have skills and abilities but if
you don’t nurture them if you don’t
develop them they will never serve you
your gifts can take you many places if
you develop your gifts most of us don’t
like to do those things that come too
easy to us I’ve always loved to talk to
people I decided taking this advice to
develop my skills as a
speaker and my gift has developed and
has taken me many places you have
something that you brought to the
universe and that if you decide that my
life deserves my developing this what I
do well and becoming the best at it and
mastering myself and seeing what I have
within me if you decide to drop your
buckets where you are and develop your
gifts I grant you you will never ever be
without I grant you that your gifts will
take you places that will literally
amaze you I grant you that if you begin
to work to develop your gifts you
develop a strong sense of happiness
you’ll get a larger vision of yourself
because part of beginning to get a
larger vision of yourself all of us need
some area of our lives where we can have
a feeling of competence that people know
when they think about this area that’s
something you do that you eat and sleep
that and that you do that you do that
and people know it and you know it and
you know that you know that you know
this if you don’t know anything else you
know this can you tell I know I know
what I’m doing hello you know this so
you’ve got to work on it
for me it was it was so much fun to me
to sit in my room and make faces and
talk to myself in different voices and
in things and they’re gone it looks like

you know and then I just sit for hours
doing that and and my parents were so
worried they would you know they would
say you know my mother tried to scare me
with the spiritual thing you know it’s
just like if you don’t stop doing that
you’re gonna see the devil know that
kind of thing and and I of course that
you know that just made me do it more I
mean I got a lot of support from my
parents that’s the one thing that I
always appreciated is that they didn’t
tell me I was being stupid they told me
I was being funny mm-hmm that was the
difference when you were 15 your father
took you to a comedy club to perform

my mother dresses me in a polyester suit
tells me you know this is what all the
boys are wearing and sends me down there
my father helped me write my act and and
I I went down to the comedy club and the
owner of the club had this little thing
that he liked to do where he would stand
backstage with a microphone and all
kinds of fun effects and you know heckle
new comedians and so when I got up there
it was just horrendous he was like
backstage going totally totally totally
boring
they were playing you know excerpts from
Jesus Christ Superstar like you know
crucify him crucify him crucify that
kind of thing so you know when you go
through a few of those experiences you
kind of develop a thick skin when it
comes to being ridiculed or whatever
where didn’t you give it up I couldn’t I
I mean I don’t have a trade you will go
through things and while you’re going
through them you can’t understand why
it’s happening to you but after you go
through it you get back and you look at
it and you say oh now I understand why I
needed that lesson have you ever
happened to you is that if you ever
happen to you that that I did I couldn’t
understand it there but after I got
through it then I saw that that was
preparing me for bigger and better
things
but as you go through the challenges of
life and you look at it and embrace
whatever comes to you don’t run from it
step toward it don’t try and duck it
like most people do see most people want
it easy see if you either come easy what
easy go see but when you go at what
you’re going to deal with and you deal
with the difficult difficulties of it
when you handle those hard things close
at hand making those hard decisions
right now that you don’t want to make
learning those things that you don’t
like to do but you know that in order
for you to get where you want to go this
is one of the hoops that you have to
flip through and I’m saying to you
whatever you got to do do it because if
you don’t life is gonna whip you until
you surrender and say okay all right all
right all right all right cooperating
okay I’ll learn okay ahead and wear me
out a long time so if it’s hard to do it
hard the great companies had a vision
that had a higher purpose beyond just
money or profits or being number one in
a market and kind of the irony there is
that by not making profits the number
one priority of the company or the
higher purpose of the company it
actually enabled these companies to make
generate more profits in the long term
so sometimes when I speak at
entrepreneur conferences I get asked
what’s a good market to get into where
it can make a lot of money and my
response is amiss instead of thinking
about where you can make a lot of money
think about what are you so passionate
about doing that you’d be happy doing it
for 10 years and even if you never made
a dime and that’s what you should be
doing and kind of the ironic thing is
the money will actually follow so you
know we’ve all heard of Craigslist he
didn’t set out to make money he was
passionate about the community and now
it’s one of the top trafficked websites
on the internet so I like to say I chase
the vision not the money there was a
movie that came
I think a couple years ago I called
notorious I think it only lasted a week
in the movie theater but but I saw it
and in it biggie smalls also known as
notorious b.i.g is well Puff Daddy says
to biggie smalls don’t chase the paper
chase the dream I just want an excuse to

you’re an entrepreneur say think about
what would you be so passionate about
doing that you’d be happy doing it for
10 years even if you never made a dime
from it and if you have employees I’m
out what’s the larger vision and greater
purpose in their work beyond just money
or profits or being number one in a
market as you begin to challenge
yourself you’ll discover some things
about yourself that you don’t know right
now the other thing is you begin to look
at yourself look at your dreams it and
and begin begin to experiment and
stepping in to your greatness what are
the things that’s very important
whatever goals and dreams that you have
repeat after me please make your move

grow and if you cannot grow you cannot
become your best and if you cannot
become your best you can’t be happy and
if you can’t be happy then what else is
there I like what Helen Keller said life
is short and unpredictable eat the
dessert first and so you want to begin
to take some chances you want to begin
to challenge yourself and make it okay
to fail and learn from your failures
don’t allow fear of failure and the
allure the attractiveness of playing it
safe in life to draw you in
you are unusually fearless and willing
to go in the face of other people
telling you something that’s crazy
and I know a lot of pretty crazy people
you still stand out where does that come
from or how do you think about making a
decision when everyone tells you this is
a crazy idea where do you get the
internal strength to do that
I’m office well I’d say I actually think
I feel feel fair quite strongly so it’s
not as though I just have the absence of
fear I’ve I feel it quite strongly but
there were times when if something is
important enough you believe in it
enough that you do it in spite of the
fear so speaking of important things
like people shouldn’t think III I should
if you should think well I feel fear
about this and therefore I shouldn’t do
it it’s normal to be to feel fair like
you’d have to definitely something
mentally wrong you shouldn’t feel fair
so you just feel it and let the
importance of it drive you to do it
anyway yeah you know actually something
that can be helpful as fatalism some
degree if you just think it’s just
accept the probabilities then that
diminishes fear so

lesson I got from my mentor Jim Rohn was
I asked my father worked two jobs
we were always broke we had no money for
food and we lived in a community we
moved to it’s just I thought they were
all rich and we’re on the other side of
the tracks it was a lower middle-class
but compared to where we live before
these people seem rich compared to us
I just didn’t understand it and Jim said
to me Tony it’s not about the value of
your soul it’s about the value of you in
the marketplace and your father’s skills
are not that valuable he used to take he
was an underground parking attendant and
he would take people’s ticket and make
change well the research now shows it’s
being done at Yale’s being done overseas
in England as well and they found that
40% of all jobs they project in the next
10 years are going to disappear because
of Technology it’s gonna be replaced by
an algorithm it’s gonna be changed you
know all these guys on Wall Street
you’re seeing all these algorithms take
over and they’re getting rid of all
these traders it’s changing radically
these in these hedge funds there’s 3
million truck drivers self-driving cars
are here in the next five years they
will be the standard certainly within
seven or eight years are you gonna hire
someone who can only work eight hours a
day and sometimes gets drunk or can make
a mistake when you can buy a machine
write down the Machine and be in a
position where it works 24 hours a day
driving but no one is telling these
drivers this and it’s they have to
retool now so technology is the biggest
challenge labor is less valuable because
of efficiencies with technology and it’s
gonna get better and better for
technology which is scary when you think
about what’s gonna happen for jobs so I
say to people you got to participate in
your own rescue
you’ve got to retool yourself the idea
of the Bernie Sanders has of providing
free education sounds wonderful but the
education he wants to do is community
college there are no skill sets in
Community College’s today for the most
part that are gonna prepare you for the
economy or a job that’s there so what is
that gonna do you’re just gonna waste
more money more time we need to retool
ourselves the government’s not gonna do
it for you as jari and strangest change
can be there were times when it was hard
to imagine that my life would be what it
is today especially the time when my son
and I were living in that bathroom maybe
remember that scene in the movie there
was a highly polished sheet metal piece
over a sink it wasn’t a mirror but it
served as a mirror and I had to wash
myself in that baby every day watch my
baby in this sink and had to ask myself
some very predictable questions what
happened why did this happen
why did that happen but the most
difficult question I had to get through
was how did I get here and the answer
was even more brutal the answer was I
drove here I had something to do with it
you can’t change something until you own
it so if you’re 50 plus and you’re
sitting out there and pointing fingers
at other people you can do that for a
long time but it’s hard to look at the
mirror and say how did I get here and
have the answer be I drove here I had
something to do with it it’s
uncomfortable to admit that well I made
some bad decisions I made some
investments I shouldn’t have made I had
something to do with it
well that man sold me that house with no
money down I should have told him what
he could do at that house huh when I
signed that adjustable rate mortgage we
all know these things only adjust
upwards no one’s ever gonna call you and
say guess what you go pay less for your
money your house next year angle happen
so the idea of I drove here is
empowering because the other side of it
is if I drove here that means I can
drive out of here I have to own it and
that bathroom I finally had to
understand what my mama used to say to
me where she would say boy to Calvary is
not coming
ain’t no backup I was 28 years old when
that part of my life happened change was
coming fast and you know what changes
everywhere all the time social change
technical logical change and the most
potent of all personal change the most
urgent question today is not so much as
what are my values and who are we the
urgent question on these times of
constant changes how exactly are you
going to navigate these new realities
put another way what are you going to do
thoughts that we have we think there are
thoughts so it makes it really hard to
change them and people meditate try to
not think
show me somebody thumb that successfully
consistently the potion hey everybody
the mind thinks thoughts but here’s the
distinction if I told you a hundred
years ago we’re gonna fly the moon and
back you would call me a lunatic that’s
where the term comes from people still
use it it doesn’t make any sense because
a lunatic is somebody thought we gotta
move back we’ve done it right I didn’t
know that but if I would have told you a
hundred years ago that there’s gonna be
a box in your pocket and you’re gonna
pull this thing out you’re gonna hit a
couple buttons and then it’s gonna
capture invisible waves that are
drifting around the earth and bring the
waves in and you’re gonna see somebody
on the other side of the earth and
you’re gonna talk to them you’re totally
nuts
thoughts are those invisible waves and
when you use your body in a certain way
if I sit like this I’m gonna channel I’m
gonna tap into a different channel those
waves than if I’m sitting like this
kinda like a TV set if I turn one
channel it might be a comedy channel I’m
gonna see a lot of laughter turn another
one it’s a horror channel turn another
channel it’s a romance channel this is
what changes which of those waves you
touch in so if you can start to realize
that your thoughts do you think are your
thoughts there’s nothing unique about
your boss they’ve been around for
thousands of years you’re just tapping
into them because of what you’re doing
with your body that makes you too
fearful or passion or too courageous or
whatever you’re feeling as you go in
those states you get different thoughts
so what I want people to see is that
learn how to just see those thoughts go
by it’s learning how to be entertained
by those thoughts because I have crazy
thoughts then but what I’ve gotten good
at is going look at that crazy thought
That’s not me that’s the mind not your
mind cuz if it’s you how do you change
you pretty hard but I really truly know
there’s I haven’t heard a thought come
out of you that’s original you’ve called
them your thoughts but they’re not
you’ve stolen them bayman around forever
when you see that it’s easier to let go
of them and letting go of those thoughts
is one of the ways that you free
yourself and then again the more you do
it just like a muscle you get better and
better and better and all of a sudden
they used to make you crazy or stressed
out or make how many things you’d be
worried about then never came to be and
some people their life is good so they
worry about other people they’re never
not worried right so it’s really just a
pattern if you want wealth real wealth
is not just money it’s emotion that’s
like what are we really after in money
you know I’m buddy you want piece of the
paper with this pictures of deceased
notables on it you want weaving money
we’ll give you think it’ll give you
freedom or security or stability or love
it won’t give you a lot it’ll get you
sex it won’t get you love right so
really what you’re after is the emotion
and so what I want people to get is the
emotion they want now and all it is is a
new habit it’s learning to discipline
this mind right by realizing the mind
thoughts are out there and letting them
float by and constantly coming back to
what can I love about this what can I
appreciate it’s like if you can learn to
love or at least appreciate start to
enjoy the things that used to get upset
about how much freedom would you have
how much more joy you dad and I know
people got billions of dollars I’ve
coached them who was like holy Sh they
live in scarcity all the time when man
I’ll never forget he’s screaming at his
wife I’m in the meat I mean I’m in the
house and he’s screaming his wife
because she spent some money on a bunch
of outfits and stuff like that he’s a
multi-billionaire he couldn’t spend all
his money in his lifetime and then he’s
totally upset at his daughters in her
20s who spent some money too and I’m
like I thought it was afterwards and I
said what do you do this for and what do
you do it for it he’s like well it’s
just it’s the principal thing I said no
the principal thing is do you love these
people and do you want them to have an
abundant life when you have you don’t
have one loss but you live like you’re
poor you know it’s like I finally got
through them but so many people that’s
what I say money doesn’t change you
money magnifies who you are so you want
to expand the depth of who you are and
free yourself from suffering by just
knowing it’s a pattern of thought and
you can change the power of the phone
baby steps count to as long as you’re
going forward and one day you had all
those baby steps up and you might be
surprised at where you can get to but
more importantly I remember something my
mom used to say to me every day she
would say son the Calvary ain’t coming
you got to do this yourself ain’t no
backup okay and then when you put those
two things together man
it wasn’t as hard to keep going forward
as you might think everything in my
world is based on coming up with the
outcome that will serve and then going
at it but most of the time your approach
going at it doesn’t work no one else
knows that but you know you can see it
doesn’t work so it’s constantly changing
your approach until you can get where
you want to go and I enter an audience
and I’m gonna give a talk of any sort I
do a huge amount homework in advance I
prepare I see is there but boom when I
stand up here I wouldn’t be sitting like
this I’m scanning constantly who I’m
looking for the people think it’s bull
I’m going to ask the people who got
dragged there I’m not looking for the
people clapping for me you know those
people will always be there and there’s
some people clap even if you’re terrible
so you don’t want to other people see
you make you feel good I’m looking for
who isn’t there so that I can reach them
so I can show them that there’s
something real here because you know
most people don’t know who I am they’d
see you know ten thousand people jumping
in a stadium and they go it’s just a big
motivational pump up I’ve never been a
motivator it’s never opened up I want
I’ve been about I think motivations
useful as like a warm bath you should
probably take a bath or a shower every
day but you need more than that you need
strategy and I but what I really believe
is energy most of us grew up and right
now most of you are learning and the
traditional style you did leave when
you’re in school you were trained to go
to your seat and be silent and be polite
and nice but the world we live in
today isn’t like that the world today if
somebody sits down and waits or someone
tell them what to do they’re in trouble
so my approach is constantly stimulating
and seeing what’s real getting people to
be raw and getting to truth you know
it’s corny as it is the truth sets us
free and we all can find our own truth
as long as we put ourselves an
environment where we don’t tolerate
anything less than that work for me
regarding balance between family and
business opportunities was always to be
mindful off in a tie family comes first
my child always came first if you’ve
managed your relationships properly that
business presentation you’re so
concerned about that big conference call
it that cannot happen without you on the
phone all those things can be
rescheduled the to son is going to have
one first baseball camp
the daughters going to have one first
dance recital and you gotta be there in
a tie family wins how you motivate key
employees I believe is number one you
gotta respect them you’ve gotta let them
grow and you gotta trust them and leave
them alone and you have to also show
them the opportunity to make more money
than they’ve ever made in their lives
all that combined that’s how you
motivate your key core employees I know
how important it is to try and take care
of your child is to pursue your career
that’s why we’ve had to be very flexible
here and regards to children it’s very
very important to to have an environment
where people who have children if they
need to can bring their child to work
but the deal is you know what if you can
bring you a little boy or a little girl
to work I can bring my dog and that’s
the deal I get inspiration from the
people that I meet when I’m on the road
200 days a year I get to see it meet and
hear from people who are doing
incredible things in their own lives and
not waiting for someone else to come and
do them I met a young person just two
weeks ago
darlin Charleston South Carolina that
had raised $30,000 to feed homeless
veterans in their community five dollars
at a time
by telling a story about Hakeem and how
important the key is to a family thirty
thousand dollars five dollars at a time
and the person that did it is 11 years
old those are the people that inspire me
I firmly believe this so I know it to be
a fact 50% of all the companies in the
fortune 500 were started in a bear
market or recession
this is the time to pursue greatness but
the key is you’ve got to be doing
something that you’re truly passionate
about
it could not be I just want to make
money
it can’t be there it’s gotta be
something that man the son can’t come up
suiting up in the morning because you
want to go do your thing
how do you know listen I was good today
but I want to be great what are the
metrics you use I mean is there data you
get back how do you improve well we have
all the social media data which we we
use big data to take a look at but I
also look at it individually because
there’s nuances that you pick up in that
way so I feed that look at that but my
biggest piece is watching the audience
and then you know every day of my life I
get feedback I’m walking down the street
a dozen people come and tell me these
beautiful stories that their life has
changed and very much like like she
shared earlier they’ll give me way too
much credit so I always straighten Kolob
you did this I’m glad I got to help and
I try to keep that balance with
everybody but my measurement is both
emotional state impact as well as
execution did they lose 20 pounds did
they go turn their business around you
know my business is organized around I
really wanna help people improve all the
qualities the areas of their life but
there’s about seven that matter the most
it’s your body it’s your emotions that
your relationships it’s the way you
manage time its finances it’s your work
and it’s the spiritual side of life and
so what I spent my life doing is
modeling people that are the best the
world you find a couple have been
together for 65 years in their 80s late
80s and they’re still making love and
passionate not just hanging out they’re
not lucky they’re doing something
different so I’m constantly finding
those patterns so that hopefully I can
compress decades in two days I can learn
from those decades of life experience
say that bring the answer here to myself
and others and see if the measurable
impact on oublie my favorite scene from
that whole movie directly related to
education it was not written as you saw
it the scene I’m referring to as the
scene that took place on the basketball
court our writer had a very dim dark
view of the world and when the little
boy said his dream was I’m going to
become a ballplayer the father said
forget that it had never happened I
couldn’t do it so you can’t do it
I went up to Will Smith on the set that
day and I said you can’t tell that to
that little boy because that’s not what
my mother told me you can’t tell him
what he cannot do we tore up the script
and what we wrote was and I’ve heard
from so many parents and especially
parents of children with special needs
I’ve heard from so many parents every
day I tell my son I tell my daughter
every day don’t ever let somebody else
tell you what you can’t do where
somebody else is saying
when somebody else is saying something
can’t be done which you got to hear them
saying as they can’t do it I’m here to
remind you that when people laugh if
your visions and ideas it’s only because
they don’t have their own visions and
ideas around what they’re supposed to do
with their life are their careers people
that don’t have any dreams for
themselves they tend to be dream killers
people that don’t have their own visions
they become vision killers they want
nothing more than to talk you out of
your own visions they don’t have dreams
for themselves they don’t have any hopes
they’re hopeless they’re uninspired
unmotivated
they have no dreams they have nothing
that they’re ambitious about but I want
to remind you to continue to dream and
dream big I have a habit of dreaming
with my eyes open
I get very inspired by the things I see
I’m inspired by architecture I’m
inspired by photography I’m inspired by
ideas I’m inspired by the idea that
someone can have a vision and if that
vision had stayed in their mind they
would have robbed the world of the
opportunity to experience that vision I
mean think about this as big as this is
the fact that it’s in the middle of the
street if they had kept this idea inside
their minds I wouldn’t be here to look
at it
or experience it this is the power of
this is the power of not allowing anyone
to laugh at you when you say I want to
build something a sculpture that can go
in the middle of the street and it can
be an iconic sculpture that will last
forever long after I’m dead and gone
this could be a sculpture that can stand
in the middle of a street here in the
streets of Paris and if this person who
built this would have allowed people to
talk to him out of their dreams and
their visions it wouldn’t be here for us
to see or experience my voice is gone we
had a sold-out show here in Paris I just
wanted to remind you to dream and dream
big and understand that your family and
friends and loved ones in most cases
boyfriends/girlfriends they will be the
first to try and talk you out of your
dreams your visions and ideas as to what
you’re supposed to do with your life
they will say who wants you when you’ve
already had two or three kids who wants
you when you put on all that weight who
wants you when you’re looking like this
and been through this and been through
that nobody’s interested in you nobody’s
checking for you they’ll laugh at you
they’ll call you names because they have
