[Music]

the be a great movie star is the highest
people who start at the box entitled

greatest fucking champions that have
ever been skill I always wanted to be
very intense I always wanted to be
number one you never want to fail
because it didn’t grow hot enough you’re
thinking too much about the small room
too much attention to the small things
that don’t really matter and you’re not
giving enough attention to the big
broader more basic things that do
ask yourselves who do you want to be
I’ve always figured out that there’s 24
hours a day you sleep six hours
there’s 18 hours left I know that some
of you out there now says whoa wait a
minute
I sleep eight hours or nine hours but
then just sleep faster I would recommend
[Music]
you never want to fail because they
didn’t work hard enough
[Music]
you can’t climb the ladder of success
with your hands in the pockets I was
poor because they didn’t have anything I
had no money I had no things with the
TVV another future with nothing as kids
but it was rich because I had a dream
dream of becoming the greatest
bodybuilder and had a dream to use
bodybuilding as a means to get into
films
[Music]

[Music]
[Music]
I didn’t want to just be a bodybuilding
champion I wanted to be the best body
build of all times
[Music]
ever ever ever give up Chicken Soup for
the Soul was rejected by a hundred and
forty-four publishers 144 publisher said
we don’t want to publish a collection of
short stories the title student Chicken
Soup for the Soul what does that mean
people don’t buy collections of short
stories there’s never been you know
successful chain of doing that so
literally we spent 14 months trying to
find a publisher and we’d go to New York
with our agent eventually our agent gave
us the book back and said I can’t tell
so we went to the National booksellers
Association convention down in Anaheim
we went from booth to booth to booth for
three days and there were 4,000
publishers representative there we go we
do public service which we publish the
book was republished in books and we got
no no no no no it was late on the third
day the world publishers from Florida
that we’ve gotten over 144 rejection
said we’ll read it and then they said
well how many copies you think will sell
after they figure we’ll buy it a couple
of days and we’ll publish it and we said
we’ll maybe 20,000 if we’re lucky
Kawika our goal katoa me knowing the
half
have you ever told from when your dream
and had him laugh out loud of you now if
we had given up after 100 publishers had
said no I wouldn’t be standing here
today you know wouldn’t have happened
and so you’ve got to be willing to
persevere because we didn’t take no see
when the world says no you say next so
what we have is is endless possibility
but you have to persevere it’s as if the
universe tests our commitment and so
today we have 147 titles in print we
sold over 115 million copies
we’re in 47 languages and over a billion
dollars where the Chicken Soup for the
Soul books have been sold worldwide so
if you’re willing to decide what you
want believe it’s possible consciously
envision the future feel the feelings of
what it would feel like if you’d achieve
this goal you can have anything and then
you take action both obvious actions and
inspired action you can do anything
you don’t pay a lot attention to reviews
those kind of things well you know
you’re always affected by opinion but
the more opinions there are of you the
more the less I look at them because I
just can’t live my life based upon what
other people think about so I can’t
concern myself too much for what other
people think it’s just not healthy I
don’t think I can I could continue to do
what I do
possibly only not what somebody thought
about it
you know every time you lose something
you’re one step closer women the next
time the difference between successful
people are not successful t are people
get on so the the hardest thing would
like to learn is to lose winning losing
doing the happy you get a high five your
friends are happy it’s your ability to
take a loss get up the next day just
yourself off and keep going
I have lost that everything you can
imagine seriously we have I have been
beat up and push down and everything
that can go wrong has gone wrong for me
but I just kept going
in the acting business you fail all the
time earlier on in my career I
auditioned for a part in a Broadway
musical perfect role for me I thought
I didn’t get the job
but here’s the thing
I didn’t quit
[Applause]
[Music]
I didn’t fall back
I walked out of there to prepare for the
next audition and the next audition and
the next thing I prayed I prayed and I
prayed but I continued to fail and fail
so you will catch a break and I did
catch a break last year I did a play
called fences on Broadway won the Tony
Award
but here’s the kicker he was at the
Court Theatre it was at the same theater
that I failed at first audition 30 years
prior
it’s your ability to take a loss get up
the next day dust yourself off and keep
going I have lost that everything you
can imagine
seriously we have I have been beat up
and put down and everything that can go
wrong has gone wrong for me but I just
have gone
[Music]
for those of you that have experienced
some hardships don’t give up on the
dream no one could have convinced me by
holding off by continuing to push
forward by continuing to run toward my
three at one day I would have my own
talk show it’s a long shot ladies and
gentlemen from Liberty fitted an
abandoned building on a floor never
knowing my mother father it’s a long
shot
being here with you today in this Dome
in Atlanta it’s a long shot
no college training labeled educable
mentally retarded but I kept ready to
walk my dream
I think I have an insatiable appetite to
make things ensure things people I have
you know I’m compelled beyond a
reasonable doubt to be like you I don’t
think that it can be a reasonably
logical choice and I get a certain point
you can tell it’s too painful too brutal
too neurotic of a path to take
so I think that that compulsion has to
be there it has to be something that you
you can doubt all the time that deep
down the side you know that this is
something you have to do and you know I
think I’ve dealt with some of the
adversity some of the challenges of
which we’ve had admitted you know I
started a band in the world laughed at
me
[Music]
and we’ve had an incredible life as a
result so if I have listened to the
choir to the chorus of everyone I would
have stopped because that’s what people
want you to be for some reason some
people would rather to
I don’t know what is you know you know I
think it’s important to be stubborn and
to follow your dreams in Mattawa
[Music]
do something I’ve never done and I don’t
know how but I can imagine
I want to engage the unknown I
truthfully want to pursue the unknown
and in the pursuit of the unknown
something else too realization and I’m
never there so when I set out to do what
I set out to do I set out to do the boss
everybody told me to not you can’t do
that you can’t do that and that’s also
consistent with all entrepreneurs
there’s always a little need to know
people who will tell them you can’t do
that and even if you could wide
butchered there’s so many better things
well the biggest struggle man was just
getting around other people that would
say I could do it I mean that’s the
biggest struggle just to get around one
guy says yeah you can do it and then you
talk to him tomorrow and you guys
nowadays you know there’s so few people
telling you to do it you know what there
is a lot of save your money protect
yourself
conserve some skin don’t take you making
risk is the new way to be risk averse so
we’re the biggest struggle for me with
my family and the people closest to me
with the biggest stuff every time I went
out to do another deal everybody told me
you don’t need to do that man it wants
to be accelerated on and then you got
somebody in the back seat saying hey be
careful nobody likes a backseat driver
okay
my advice is do things that are true to
you you know you know most things that
I’m involved with are extension of being
creative you know Rocawear the clothing
company you know so I would just say get
involved in things that you love and
also have you know have a standard for
yourself and have some sort of integrity
and try to you know find some sort of
truth in what you’re doing
people that build grape things in any
business anywhere they all have one
thing in common they love the process
if you start a building or a company
because it’s money you can’t wait to get
the building finished or you have the
cash flow you’ll get the building
finished and you’ll probably have the
cash flow but if you love the idea of
creating a building you love the process
of solving the problems of digging into
the details of tearing up the paper and
over and over again revisiting a room a
lobby a restaurant to get it so that it
really feels good if you’ve got a
passion for process you’re the kind of a
person if you’re surrounded by good
colleagues then that’s a team that
produces superior projects
[Music]
going in entrepreneurs need to realize
that sometimes it’s not the idea you
know it’s not seed it’s not who you know
it’s not how much money or of access to
it’s really finding something that you
you really love to do I have no idea I
love computers and technology done I
mean I took one class in Indiana and
computers and I cheated to get through
it as poor treatment and then I bought a
little PC in 99 for a from Texas
Instruments for $99 sort of teaching
myself the program and found you know
four hours later five hours later I was
I would look up and I’ve been working
this entire time and I loved it and so
that was the difference when I finally
fucked I failed a lot of times and I
really I didn’t know where I would find
my success and then all of a sudden I
started playing with PCs and technology
and it just clicked I loved what I was
doing I decided what I was going to do a
job I loved what I was doing I would
walk around and I would dance some
things as I was delivering my papers and
that kind of helped me put a future of
what I wanted to do and now we’re just
being a young officer going I thank God
every day that I’ve gotten to the chance
to do something that I love doing
I feel anybody could do something that
they develop doing if they if they go
out there in the right way if they go
out there with the love the motivation
sort of the lows and missing the love of
leaving a legacy behind mourning the
selfishness of just doing it for money
doing it to blow up to eat a man or a
woman but I have the same if you do it
to make history if you do it to change
people’s lives to make people feel good
to make yourself feel good it’s going to
come it’s just gonna come naturally
don’t necessarily think that you have to
have the home run in the huge Apple
Computer on your first start I spent a
long time in my life with skills just
building little devices for fun for fun
is one of the key things because that
drives you to think and think and think
and make it better and better and better
than you ever would if you’re doing it
for a company build things at first for
yourself that you would want
first of all you have to make sure that
this thing is for you and it’s who you
are and you’re built for this you know
and then you have to give it the passion
that’s necessary you know like I said I
don’t do it for the money the money is
going to come I do it because of the
love that I have for it you know I’m
saying if I was a plumber or something
like that I still would make it pop
records that’s how much love I have for
it you know I feel like right now I’ve
been again close to 27 years and I’ve
actually thought about this just
recently out of the entire 27 my 27 year
career there’s only been two weeks that
I’ve been out of the studio
there’s I’ve never been out of studio
longer than two weeks in my entire
career that’s how much love I have for
this thing that I do so that’s the thing
just the passion that you have for it
and really really put your all into it
and make sure that your word is the last
word that way you don’t you know you
don’t play the blame game or anything
like that if it comes out hot it’s on
you if it doesn’t come out hot it’s on
you you’re I’m saying that’s all it is
to it
[Music]
the difference between people who are
successful or not although those who are
successful seem to know from age of
seven or eight maybe older you know
they’re very in tune with what they love
they compared to a voice inside their
head not literally a voice but something
so you you really are drawn to this
subject and they hear it throughout
their lives for me it was it was writing
and books since I was a kid and you know
any time I deviated from that love and
went into something else I just was so
unhappy I knew that I wasn’t doing the
right thing and so it’s just like this
voice that keeps drawing me back to what
you really
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
you know I think that success in
business is a very difficult thing to
achieve and it’s more difficult today
probably than any other time despite the
vast number of opportunities and as it
relates to finding your calling in terms
of what the opportunity of Norfolk
entrepreneurial adventure is going to be
it has to be linked to something that
you are so passionate and crazed about
that you’re willing to knock down walls
and climb out and do the things that are
going to put yourself in a position
sacrificing so many other things for its
success and you can only do that when
there’s a compelling underlying feeling
that you have that this is something I’m
going to fight for the gesture and
without that I think it’s going to be a
commodity based experience not only for
the customer but for you and I think you
can’t really succeed at the levels that
you want to and let them find that thing
that you’re so passionate excited in
they’re lovely and I think he’s got it
along the way you’re going to have to
convince so many other people to believe
in you and the idea and the
opportunities and the struggle and the
obstacles that are going to come and
over only the overcome by this passion
that you have and which you’re going to
be able to get people to follow you over
though over those hurdles I know it
sounds a little bit sophomoric but it’s
still true
the great companies had a vision that
had a higher purpose beyond just money
or profits or being number one in a
market and kind of the irony there is
that by not making profits the number
one priority of the company or the
higher purpose of the company it
actually enabled these companies to make
generate more profits in the long term
so sometimes when I speak at
entrepreneur conferences I get asked
what’s the good market to get into where
I can make a lot of money and my
response to them is instead of thinking
about where you can make a lot of money
think about where are you so passionate
about doing that you’d be happy doing it
for 10 years and even if you never made
a dime and that’s what you should be
doing and kind of the ironic thing is
the money will actually follow so we’ve
all heard of Craigslist
she didn’t set out to make money he was
passion about the community and now it’s
one of the top traffic websites on the
internet so I like to say I chase the
vision not the money
