mr. Zuckerberg would you be comfortable
sharing with us the name of the hotel
you stayed in last night no if you’ve
messaged anybody this week would you
share with us the names of the people
you’ve messaged a senator no I would
probably not choose to do that publicly
here I think that maybe what this is all
about anyone who uses social media might
admit it can be hard to tear yourself
away now the former head of Facebook
says that’s exactly what the founders
intended the inventors creators you know
and it’s it’s me it’s mark it’s the you
know Kevin Systrom and Instagram it’s
all of these people understood this
consciously and we did it anyway
as a dad do you worry about social media
addiction as a problem for America’s
teen you know like any tool they’re good
and bad uses of it the tycoon’s of
social media have to stop pretending
that they’re friendly nerd gods building
a better world and admit they’re just
tobacco farmers and t-shirts selling an
addictive product to children because
let’s face it
checking your likes is the new smoking
I think in the back deep deep recesses
of our minds we we kind of knew
something bad could happen but I think
the way we defined it was not like this
it literally is a point now where I
think we have created tools that are
ripping apart the social fabric of how
society works that is truly where we are
and I would encourage all of you as the
future leaders of the world to really
internalize how important this is if you
feed the Beast that beast will destroy
it the moral rot in this country began
when corporate America decided it wasn’t
enough to just successfully sell your
product people needed to be addicted to
it
Keibler’s cookies are not really made by
elves and trees they’re engineered in
labs like all processed food with
precise combinations of salt sugar and
fat that are specifically designed to
not satisfy the reason you can eat just
one pretzel is the salt is like the
nicotine in the cigarette it’s the drug
and the pretzel is the delivery system
no civil discourse no cooperation
misinformation miss truth and it’s not
an American problem this is not about
Russian ads this is a global problem we
all know that feeling you post a picture
on social media and when the likes pop
up it floods your brain with gratifying
dopamine Facebook purposely holds back
to the likes sometimes so you will keep
checking my solution is I just don’t use
these tools in I have it for years
it’s baited huge tension with my friends
huge tensions in my social circles
if you look at like you know my Facebook
feed I probably haven’t I’ve posted
maybe two times in seven years three
and it’s weird I guess I kind of just
innately didn’t want to get programmed
[Music] you
