point the universe is going to get out

represent possibilities I want to
represent the idea that you really can
make what you want that’s just I just
believe that I believe that I can create
whatever I want to create if I can put
my head on it right study it learn the
patterns and you know I just it’s hard
to put into words really metaphysical
esoteric nonsan but I feel very strongly
that we are who we choose to be
you can spend your whole life imagining
ghosts worrying about the pathway to the
future but all there will ever be is
what’s happening here in the decisions
we make in this moment which are based
in either love or fear so many of us
choose our path out of fear disguised as
practicality what we really want seems
impossibly out of reach and ridiculous
to expect so we never dare to ask the
universe for it I’m saying I’m the proof
that you can ask the universe for it my
father could have been a great comedian
but he didn’t believe that that was
possible for him and so he made a
conservative choice instead he got a
safe job as an accountant and when I was
12 years old he was let go from that
safe job and our family had to do
whatever we could to survive I learned
many great lessons from my father not
the least of which was that you can fail
and we don’t work so you might as well
take a chance on doing what you love

take full responsibility for your life

except where you are and the
responsibility that you’re going to take
yourself where you want to go so once
that we have two primary choices in life
we can either accept conditions as they
exist or we can take the responsibility
to change them see a lot of people want
to exempt themselves from taking
responsibility all they want to do is
talk about the problem every time you
see them they’ll tell you their story
over and over and over and over again no
no you want to take responsibility for
your life I got me here I can get me out
of this and I’m getting out I’m not
going to be a volunteer victim

don’t be afraid to fail because if
you’re afraid to fail then you’re always
holding yourself back because you’re
afraid that if you go all out you may
fail well in weightlifting we learned it
very quickly it’s the only way you could
break a record is if you’re willing to
fail that’s when you put on more weight
you try it sometimes you may be dumb you
would not be able to lift it we just
happened to me many times but eventually
when you train hard enough you will lift
it so don’t be afraid to fail you how
far can you fall
you have to have the talent to be able
to make something that people want but
then you also have to have the drive and
the desire to you know sometimes people
are successful because maybe they don’t
have that drive but they have someone
around them who takes their raw talent
and pushes them but what you often see
is when that other person steps away
their career can collapse even though
their talent may be immense

I take the gear by here and that’s what
I trying to tell kids don’t move to make
sure too fast just like don’t go to
tomorrow too fast deal with today do it
right now you know let your years take
care of years but go year by year go day
by day hour by hour ago minute

and I I mean personally I always try to
listen because I might be not and maybe
I’m not getting something if I always
try and take everybody’s visit it’s
important to listen to everyone
there’s many people you can get their
input but then finally you have to make
your own decision about what you’re
gonna do and that’s it that’s what you
feel and that’s it and that that’s the
most important thing I think the most
important thing because that’s where the
uniqueness comes in because it’s you
you’ve done it it’s your thing it’s not
anybody else’s it’s your choice

I don’t wish to alienate people here
with about what I’m about to say but you
know your destiny is in your hands and I
had succeeded because I had to no one
sorted anything out for me
I didn’t ask out to any government he

pretty please find me some work please
and do something for me because it was a
waste of bloody time simply that a waste
of time and if I was going to do
something I had to do it myself that’s
it
and and I would say to every one of you
here don’t sit around relying upon
magically some government going to
create an environment that’s going to
make it easy for you to find work and
find jobs you’ve got to go out there and
fight for it yourself
I’m sorry to say I can’t give you any
other any other form of advice if you
want something bad enough for you do it
and if you look at some of these
wannabes that make themselves television
stars or pop stars and all that type of
stuff they have a desire to want to be
famous
and they don’t stop until they’re
recognized and they do and half the
people that you see on television these
days
in the entertainment industry are those
that added determination that wants to
do it you’re going to control your
destiny and telling you no one else is
going to do it

I found that in life as life goes on
life is about losing as we get older we
lose our hair we lose our teeth we lose
my mother’s father’s sister’s and but
it’s the ones who overcome their lost in
life and shun away adversity and always
willing to fight it everybody every
particular moment in life are the ones
that are able to transcend and be able
to spread the world to other people
who’s in that same particular gender as
they are

set out these goals and then you have
long term goals and then you have short
term goals and somewhere within you know
you find your hobbies and then you find
the things that you are interested in
which are two separate things because
what your what your hobbies are which
you naturally and readily go to and what
you’re interested in are the things that
you don’t mind studying a little more
and researching a little more than you
would anything else in somewhere at the
50-yard line is what you should be doing
with your life I was lucky enough to
stumble across that I look at every
opportunity as something it cements the
next block in your sidewalk it’s just
important that you know don’t look over
your shoulder every five minutes if
anything just continue to stand on your
tippy-toes to see how far you can see
and what what’s in the horizon

the only thing that I see that is
distinctly different about me is I’m not
afraid to die on a treadmill right I
will run he would not be out working I
will not be out work trying period you
know you might have more talent than me
you might be smarter than me you might
be sexier than me you might be all of
those things you got it on me in nine
categories but if we get on the
treadmill together right there’s two
things you’re getting off first
yeah or I’m gonna die it’s really that
simple it’s such a simple basic concept
is the the guy who was willing to hustle
the most is gonna be the guy that just
gets that loose ball you know you got
the oh he got that oh okay he got two oh
god he’s hustling grabbed out my dad was
going to be out of bounds but he saved
it back in it’s like the commodity that
I see the majority of people who aren’t
getting the places they want or aren’t
achieving the things that they want in
this business is strictly based on
hustle it’s strictly based on being
outworked it’s strictly based on missing
crucial opportunities I say all the time
if you stay ready you ain’t got to get
ready

I say if you have a passion for business
you also better have a knowledge for it
and so if people want to own a business
they better have worked for somebody
else for a while and they better have an
intrinsic knowledge of that industry and
so it would be like you getting into you
know the barber business and I never
went to learn how to cut hair
I shouldn’t have acknowledged if I don’t
have the knowledge then I better have a
partner or I better have a manager or a
leader in place he’s invested in the
business he does have the knowledge and
so three guys want to open up a
restaurant because they think it’s food
open at the restaurant but none of them
know how to cook or sway tables I
shouldn’t be in my business

our intention is everything nothing
happens on this planet without it not
one single thing has ever been
accomplished without intention

I’m a go at business as hard as I wanted
the game you know I study businesses and
I study people as much as I studied
people trying to figure out place you
know so it’s kind of something I told
the kids yesterday you know when you see
transition really start to happen when
you really want to transition something
master there’s no limits you know don’t
let the word I will put limits on you
you can do anything you want to do but
make sure if you have a vision make sure
the vision is written you know make sure
you have something to actually chase and
not just hoping and wishing and all
these different things so if I did that
I’d tell guys it’s all the time put your
plan together and then work the plan
don’t don’t don’t work somebody else’s
plan you have to create your own brand
yourself and your brand is whatever you
feel like doing whatever you are is
passionate about chase it
essentially and I would say this to
anybody is that you know it’s really
it’s easy to to embrace hopelessness
when things seem insurmountable
and yet it is it’s actually just a
matter of time until all the elements
come together for things to be all right
I mean I believe that you know most
difficult situations will resolve
themselves if you are persistent and if
you don’t if you don’t give up entirely
and that’s what I never did I never give
up

we didn’t grow up with the sense that
where we were was where we were going to
be you know we grew up with the sense
that where we were almost didn’t matter
because they are becoming we were
becoming something greater

I love to win the people that love to
win they’re gonna be successful but this
okay losing some time you might not win
all the time because you always say
tomorrow I lost today but tomorrow I’m
gonna make up for it so be prepared to
take losses in business being
entrepreneurs so that’s the think about
it but that one win take away all the
pain if you are to the Lord and you own
your own business and you run your
business

you’ve got to decide that the behavior
pattern that you have adopted doesn’t
work for you you’ve got to change your
strategies and changing your strategy
means reinventing your life recreating
you and you have the power to do that
you can decide that you’re going to
change that you’re not going to be a
wimp
you can decide that you’re going to
stand up to life
you can decide that I’m going to live
each day as if it were my last you can
you have the power to make that decision
you can decide I’m going to work on
myself and develop myself I’m going to
empower me and all of these things that
are happening to me right now they’re
just temporary inconveniences they’re
not stronger than I am I’m in charge

you have to be what you’re going to be
you have to fulfill your destiny for
whatever reason this is this the way I
am I jump up and start doing these
things and I like building things and as
a kid I like building things and what
I’m building now is a brand it’s a but
it is still building and it is a
compulsion I cannot help it it is what I
do and I’ve realized over time that it’s
also what makes me happy but if I can’t
do it I don’t feel fulfilled so it’s a
compulsion

you will only ever have two choices love
or fear choose love and don’t ever let
fear turn you against your playful heart

some entrepreneurs tend to miscalculate
is everything what I mean by that is
optimism has a place but I think even
more so for the first time entrepreneur
you need to be pragmatically pessimistic
what I mean by that is you need to
define all the worst-case scenarios in
terms of financial loss time loss etc
look at what you will learn if that
happens and accept and come to terms
with that before you ever start if you
don’t do that and you go straight into
battling the world trying to conquer the
world with rose-colored glasses on the
first time you hit a major hiccup you’re
gonna become really demoralized and you
will quit

think big because then you’re gonna get
big then you’re gonna go and achieve big
things that is the most important thing
we don’t achieve big things by accident
so shoot for the top shoot for the skies
you fill it you know for the stars

you say to yourself every day it’s
possible just say that every day to them
it’s possible because what does that do
see it begins to change your belief
system so the way in which we operate
ladies and gentlemen it’s a
manifestation of what we believe what’s
possible for us whatever you’ve done up
to this point all that it really is is a
duplication it’s a reproduction of what
you believe subconsciously that you
deserve and what’s possible for your
life before in April 1954 the common
belief the universe will believe because
it had been tried again and again and
again and people that fail the belief
laws that man was not physically capable
of breaking the four-minute barrier that
he could not run a mile in less than
four minutes that was to believe on the
planet it had never been done but here’s
what happened ladies and gentlemen Roger
Bannister came along and he broke the
four-minute barrier now here’s what’s
significant about that since that time
up to this day over 20,000 people have
done it including high school kids
what changed 20,000 people what changed
here’s what happened when they got on
the track they knew it had been done and
because they knew it had been done there
was a new belief about this barrier
about this goal that was unreachable and
those 20,000 people gotten erased
believing knowing in the heart that
someone had done it that it’s possible
that they could do it and I’m saying
that if you know anybody that had some
goals some dreams something they wanted
to do and they did it denies saying that
you know in your heart that if someone
has done it then you can do it it’s
possible and that if someone can make
that dream become a reality that it’s
it’s possible that you can make your
dream become reality

you must fail a hundred times need to
succeed once it’s that’s part of it no
one succeeds the first time it’s
learning how to not get disappointed
with failure to understand failure
you only learn when you fail you don’t
learn me as you see

when you have a dream and the dream
isn’t something you dream and then it
happens the dream is something you never
knew was going to come into your life
dreams always come from behind you not
not right between your eyes it sneaks up
on you but when you have a dream it
doesn’t often come at you screaming in
your face this is who you are this is
what you must be for the rest of your
life sometimes a dream almost whispers
and I’ve always said to my kids the
hardest thing to listen to your
instincts your human personal intuition
always whispers it never shouts very
hard to hear so you have to every day of
your lives be ready to hear what
whispers in your ear it very rarely
shouts and if you can listen to the
whisper and if it tickles your heart and
it’s something you think you want to do
for the rest of your life then that is
going to be what you do for the rest of
your life and we will benefit from
everything you do

you should seek failures see if you’re
playing it safe you’re not gonna win if
you’re playing it safe like that all say
you know you were cutting your little
girl better to be safe than sorry well
that’s a bunch of crap it’s not better
to be safe than sorry it’s by trying
things that you figure out how far you
can go you got to get outside the box
like it’s reported Edison tried 3000
ways before he built the incandescent
light he said he didn’t deal 3,000 times
he said there was 3000 different steps
to building a light bulb well there’s
different steps to get to where you’re
going and I really do treat winning and
losing exactly the same I do not let it
upset me

that’s not going to happen as quickly as
you want it to happen a lot of things
gonna happen that will catch you off
guard and so therefore you’ve got to
deal with and handle it as it comes and
not only that but that faith and
patience drives you into action you got
to keep moving and keep plugging away
and the Far East they have something
that’s called the Chinese bamboo tree
the Chinese bamboo tree takes five years
to grow and when they go through a
process of growing it they have to water
and fertilize the ground where it is
every day and it doesn’t break through
the ground until the fifth year okay but
once it breaks through the ground within
five weeks
it grows 90 feet tall now the question
is does it grow 90 feet tall in five
weeks or five years the answer is
obvious it grows 90 feet tall in five
years because at any time had that
person stopped watering and nurturing
and fertilizing that dream that bamboo
tree would have died in the ground how
long have you been working on your dream
it’s good and you have nothing to show
this is all you got to show people don’t
do that to you and some people ladies
and gentlemen they stop because they
don’t see instant results it doesn’t
happen quickly

go to the experts for advice don’t ask
the first next-door your mother father
brother the guy works beside you because
they don’t necessarily know there’s no
point in asking a person how to earn a
lot of money if they’re only earning ten
thousand a year they don’t know they
knew they’d probably be earning a lot
it’s like I don’t go to a sick doctor if
you want to get healthy okay so you find
someone that you can go to for advice
get a real good book and lock into that
book and start to study

I’ve said for years that that you have
to celebrate your victories and really
celebrate your mistakes and what I mean
by that is that you have to learn from
the mistakes that you make and you’ve
got to create an environment where
people are not afraid to take a risk and
not afraid to do things that are beyond
what the expectations are at the same
time you got to set up a framework for
how those things are managed and judge
and evaluate

the only way to really learn it is to do
it and you have to become expert and
there are talks about you know what is
an expert well an expert someone who
dedicates 10,000 hours to their craft
okay it’s a lot of time not over 20
years but in as compressed a period of
time as possible the advantage of going
to these investment banks is in a in a
heady environment that happens you know
100 hour work weeks great and you know
while all your friends so you graduate
college with they’re going out on Friday
night and Saturday you guess what you’re
working and on set you’re working and on
some you are working
but that’s how you build you know that
that fabric and you know to be an expert
at your craft you cannot do this
business well if you’re not an expert at
your craft

when we have had failures those have
ultimately resulted in some of the
greatest successes we’ve ever had you
talk about those particularly when
someone comes to see you and they say ya
feel really bad because this didn’t work
out okay well let me tell you about some
other things that didn’t work out that
we learned a lot from and you know let’s
pick ourselves back up and let’s figure
out what what we what we learned from
this and how we go apply that next time
you know when you’re in the zone of
doing things that no one’s ever done
before if you’re only succeeding you’re
not taking enough risks
one of the things that learn was asked
the impossible and really dream big
which we learn about people is if you
paint a very broad vision you attract
people who really want to make it happen
because there are dreamers too so you
can inspire people and with that
inspiration you get the smartest people
and they deal with a lot of stuff

I believe desire and will to win is
everything I don’t know why I’m like I
am but my butt’s always burning there’s
always something say art dadgummit
you’re supposed to go far alright
dadgummit you’re supposed to be somebody
you’re supposed to make a difference
with you lie what does the $500,000 your
person do the $50,000 your person
doesn’t do you look at outside and study
those two individuals everything seems
to be the same they both are the same
sex they both are the same age have the
same training the same positions the
same contract the same fringe benefits
they both are successful they work hard
they’re good family people make tough
commitments but what’s the difference
what does the $500,000 year person do
the $50,000 year person doesn’t do he
pays the price a little bit more he
works hard and a little bit more he’s
loyal to the company a little bit more
he believes in a little bit more he
makes Maine a little bit more he saves
money a little bit more if you want to
win in these United States you got to be
tough and you can’t quit the last thing
I’ve talked to you about today and
building this winning edge is folks if
you want to win in business you got to
be a leader leadership is everything you
show me anything
these United States that win I’ll show
you a leader at work you show me a
successful church Boy Scout true club
football team business I’ll show you
something run by leader sissy I thought
at one time in my life you had to be
smart to win I used to have these smart
people that dress so pretty and talk so
pretty and use these big words they just
intimidated me and I said aren’t you
can’t ever be that good why don’t you
just throw in the towel and go on back
coach football for living and I found
two things out about smart people I
think it’s almost impossible for a smart
person to win in business in America
today because I find smart people spend
their whole lifetime figuring things out
they always trying to figure out an
easier way in a quicker way and another
thing I found out about smart people
they just don’t get around to doing
nothing they see somebody like art
Williams everybody said well he can’t do
it and some I like that can’t do it but
he does it see folks I want you to know
almost everybody in America almost does
enough to win they almost get there they
almost over the hump they almost have it
going they almost in everything they do
almost is a way of life to almost
everybody in America but the winners do
it what do they do they do whatever it
takes to get the job done they do it and
do it and do it and do it and do it
until the job gets done and then they
talk about how great it is to be
somebody they’re proud of we need
leaders in America who can do it if you
want to become somebody do it if you
want to go and finish for yourself do it
if you want to become financially
independent do it I hear too much talk
in these United States everybody can
talk a good game we need people in
America who can do it I go all over this
country with Al weaves and I have people
say art you you count on me wonderful
just do it
alright I guarantee this is my light
last stop I’m gonna win now

just have one good month and get the
ball going I know I could make it big
super just do it all right if I can just
pay off this debt I could really go
great just do it
hard if I can just sell my house do it
but how does a selling do it anyway I’m
not making any money what can I do you
just do it and do what are you do it and

my heart what’s the primary difference
between winners and losers the winner
the winners do it they do it and do it
and do it and do it until the job gets
done and then they talk about how great
it is to finally have achieved something
unique and how glad they are that they
didn’t quit like everybody else and how
wonderful it is to finally be somebody
they’re proud of and make a difference
with their life when you look at the
accomplishments of accomplished people
and you say boy that must have been
really hard you know when you look at
something that looks hard
that was probably easy and conversely
when you look at something that looks
easy that was probably hard and so
you’re never gonna know which is which
until you actually go and do it so just
go and do it
try learn from it you know you’ll fail
at some things that’s a learning
experience that you need so that you can
take that on to the next experience and
don’t let people who you may respect and
who you believe know what they’re
talking about don’t let them tell you it
can’t be done because often they will
tell you it can’t be done and it’s just
cuz you don’t have the courage to try

you want to raise the bar on yourself
most people won’t do that see most
people engage in low life living
low-risk living this God said if you’re
not willing to risk you cannot grow and
if you cannot grow you cannot become
your best and if you cannot become your
best you can’t be happy and if you can’t
be happy then what else is there I like
what Helen Keller said life is short and
unpredictable eat the dessert first and
so you want to begin to take some
chances you want to begin to challenge
yourself and make it okay to fail and
learn from your failures don’t allow
fear of failure and the allure the
attractiveness of playing it safe in
life to draw you in you can’t get out of

what the world’s gonna look like in five
years what will people be doing what
will your customers want where will cost
speed will be in our case what will
networks look like how important will
phones be what will the apps look like
what services and spend a little awful
lot of time on that and then take a look
at your offerings what are the strongest
ones which are the ones are going to
iterate quickly
you’re probably gonna do fine there you
understand those businesses what about
these others if you think about in the
media business there are business many
businesses that are growing very well
and others that are in great trouble
this is completely predicted five years
ago right so the leaders and the ones
that are in trouble should have right
done a five-year plan and said holy cow
what are we gonna do what are the things
we do or maybe we sell ourselves we try
something different but almost all of
these strategic shifts are predictable
using my my five year model
you know at some point in your life you
know you have to work with people where
you feel a bit insecure that’s essential
because that means you’re working with
people who are better than you and or
pushing you right and so always
encourage if you if you actually feel
very secure in what you do you know that
means you’re doing something comfortable
and you’re not pushing yourself and so
there are many many times have felt
working with people in a group am i
doing enough these people seem much
better than me and I think I think
that’s a inherent part of learning

something unless we can really shake up
an engine see they could make a major
difference unless it’s going to enhance
the Virgin brand if there’s any danger
of it damaging the brand in any way even
if it’s going to make us a lot of money
the cigarette companies or something

you know we want to in you know we want

listen because I might be not and maybe
I’m not getting something if I always
try and take everybody’s visit it’s
important to listen to everyone
there’s many people you can get their
input but then finally you have to make
your own decision about what you’re
gonna do and that’s it that’s what you
feel and that’s it and that that’s the
most important thing I think the most
important thing because that’s where the
uniqueness comes in because it’s you
you’ve done it it’s your thing it’s not
anybody else’s it’s your choice

I don’t wish to alienate people here
with about what I’m about to say but you
know your destiny is in your hands and I
had succeeded because I had to no one
sorted anything out for me
I didn’t ask out to any government he
said
pretty please find me some work please
and do something for me because it was a
waste of bloody time simply that a waste
of time and if I was going to do
something I had to do it myself that’s
it
and and I would say to every one of you
here don’t sit around relying upon
magically some government going to
create an environment that’s going to
make it easy for you to find work and
find jobs you’ve got to go out there and
fight for it yourself
I’m sorry to say I can’t give you any
other any other form of advice if you
want something bad enough for you do it
and if you look at some of these
wannabes that make themselves television
stars or pop stars and all that type of
stuff they have a desire to want to be
famous
and they don’t stop until they’re
recognized and they do and half the
people that you see on television these
days
in the entertainment industry are those
that added determination that wants to
do it you’re going to control your
destiny and telling you no one else is
going to do it

I found that in life as life goes on
life is about losing as we get older we
lose our hair we lose our teeth we lose
my mother’s father’s sister’s and but
it’s the ones who overcome their lost in
life and shun away adversity and always
willing to fight it everybody every
particular moment in life are the ones
that are able to transcend and be able
to spread the world to other people
who’s in that same particular gender as
they are

set out these goals and then you have
long term goals and then you have short
term goals and somewhere within you know
you find your hobbies and then you find
the things that you are interested in
which are two separate things because
what your what your hobbies are which
you naturally and readily go to and what
you’re interested in are the things that
you don’t mind studying a little more
and researching a little more than you
would anything else in somewhere at the
50-yard line is what you should be doing
with your life I was lucky enough to
stumble across that I look at every
opportunity as something it cements the
next block in your sidewalk it’s just
important that you know don’t look over
your shoulder every five minutes if
anything just continue to stand on your
tippy-toes to see how far you can see
and what what’s in the horizon

the only thing that I see that is
distinctly different about me is I’m not
afraid to die on a treadmill right I
will run he would not be out working I
will not be out work trying period you
know you might have more talent than me
you might be smarter than me you might
be sexier than me you might be all of
those things you got it on me in nine
categories but if we get on the
treadmill together right there’s two
things you’re getting off first
yeah or I’m gonna die it’s really that
simple it’s such a simple basic concept
is the the guy who was willing to hustle
the most is gonna be the guy that just
gets that loose ball you know you got
the oh he got that oh okay he got two oh
god he’s hustling grabbed out my dad was
going to be out of bounds but he saved
it back in it’s like the commodity that
I see the majority of people who aren’t
getting the places they want or aren’t
achieving the things that they want in
this business is strictly based on
hustle it’s strictly based on being
outworked it’s strictly based on missing
crucial opportunities I say all the time
if you stay ready you ain’t got to get
ready

I say if you have a passion for business
you also better have a knowledge for it
and so if people want to own a business
they better have worked for somebody
else for a while and they better have an
intrinsic knowledge of that industry and
so it would be like you getting into you
know the barber business and I never
went to learn how to cut hair
I shouldn’t have acknowledged if I don’t
have the knowledge then I better have a
partner or I better have a manager or a
leader in place he’s invested in the
business he does have the knowledge and
so three guys want to open up a
restaurant because they think it’s food
open at the restaurant but none of them
know how to cook or sway tables I
shouldn’t be in my business

our intention is everything nothing
happens on this planet without it not
one single thing has ever been
accomplished without intention

I’m a go at business as hard as I wanted
the game you know I study businesses and
I study people as much as I studied
people trying to figure out place you
know so it’s kind of something I told
the kids yesterday you know when you see
transition really start to happen when
you really want to transition something
master there’s no limits you know don’t
let the word I will put limits on you
you can do anything you want to do but
make sure if you have a vision make sure
the vision is written you know make sure
you have something to actually chase and
not just hoping and wishing and all
these different things so if I did that
I’d tell guys it’s all the time put your
plan together and then work the plan
don’t don’t don’t work somebody else’s
plan you have to create your own brand
yourself and your brand is whatever you
feel like doing whatever you are is
passionate about chase it
essentially and I would say this to
anybody is that you know it’s really
it’s easy to to embrace hopelessness
when things seem insurmountable
and yet it is it’s actually just a
matter of time until all the elements
come together for things to be all right
I mean I believe that you know most
difficult situations will resolve
themselves if you are persistent and if
you don’t if you don’t give up entirely
and that’s what I never did I never give
up

we didn’t grow up with the sense that
where we were was where we were going to
be you know we grew up with the sense
that where we were almost didn’t matter
because they are becoming we were
becoming something greater

I love to win the people that love to
win they’re gonna be successful but this
okay losing some time you might not win
all the time because you always say
tomorrow I lost today but tomorrow I’m
gonna make up for it so be prepared to
take losses in business being
entrepreneurs so that’s the think about
it but that one win take away all the
pain if you are to the Lord and you own
your own business and you run your
business

you’ve got to decide that the behavior
pattern that you have adopted doesn’t
work for you you’ve got to change your
strategies and changing your strategy
means reinventing your life recreating
you and you have the power to do that
you can decide that you’re going to
change that you’re not going to be a
wimp
you can decide that you’re going to
stand up to life
you can decide that I’m going to live
each day as if it were my last you can
you have the power to make that decision
you can decide I’m going to work on
myself and develop myself I’m going to
empower me and all of these things that
are happening to me right now they’re
just temporary inconveniences they’re
not stronger than I am I’m in charge
here

you have to be what you’re going to be
you have to fulfill your destiny for
whatever reason this is this the way I
am I jump up and start doing these
things and I like building things and as
a kid I like building things and what
I’m building now is a brand it’s a but
it is still building and it is a
compulsion I cannot help it it is what I
do and I’ve realized over time that it’s
also what makes me happy but if I can’t
do it I don’t feel fulfilled so it’s a
compulsion

you will only ever have two choices love
or fear choose love and don’t ever let
fear turn you against your playful heart

some entrepreneurs tend to miscalculate
is everything what I mean by that is
optimism has a place but I think even
more so for the first time entrepreneur
you need to be pragmatically pessimistic
what I mean by that is you need to
define all the worst-case scenarios in
terms of financial loss time loss etc
look at what you will learn if that
happens and accept and come to terms
with that before you ever start if you
don’t do that and you go straight into
battling the world trying to conquer the
world with rose-colored glasses on the
first time you hit a major hiccup you’re
gonna become really demoralized and you
will quit

think big because then you’re gonna get
big then you’re gonna go and achieve big
things that is the most important thing
we don’t achieve big things by accident
so shoot for the top shoot for the skies
you fill it you know for the stars

you say to yourself every day it’s
possible just say that every day to them
it’s possible because what does that do
see it begins to change your belief
system so the way in which we operate
ladies and gentlemen it’s a
manifestation of what we believe what’s
possible for us whatever you’ve done up
to this point all that it really is is a
duplication it’s a reproduction of what
you believe subconsciously that you
deserve and what’s possible for your
life before in April 1954 the common
belief the universe will believe because
it had been tried again and again and
again and people that fail the belief
laws that man was not physically capable
of breaking the four-minute barrier that
he could not run a mile in less than
four minutes that was to believe on the
planet it had never been done but here’s
what happened ladies and gentlemen Roger
Bannister came along and he broke the
four-minute barrier now here’s what’s
significant about that since that time
up to this day over 20,000 people have
done it including high school kids
what changed 20,000 people what changed
here’s what happened when they got on
the track they knew it had been done and
because they knew it had been done there
was a new belief about this barrier
about this goal that was unreachable and
those 20,000 people gotten erased
believing knowing in the heart that
someone had done it that it’s possible
that they could do it and I’m saying
that if you know anybody that had some
goals some dreams something they wanted
to do and they did it denies saying that
you know in your heart that if someone
has done it then you can do it it’s
possible and that if someone can make
that dream become a reality that it’s
it’s possible that you can make your
dream become reality

you must fail a hundred times need to
succeed once it’s that’s part of it no
one succeeds the first time it’s
learning how to not get disappointed
with failure to understand failure
you only learn when you fail you don’t
learn me as you see

when you have a dream and the dream
isn’t something you dream and then it
happens the dream is something you never
knew was going to come into your life
dreams always come from behind you not
not right between your eyes it sneaks up
on you but when you have a dream it
doesn’t often come at you screaming in
your face this is who you are this is
what you must be for the rest of your
life sometimes a dream almost whispers
and I’ve always said to my kids the
hardest thing to listen to your
instincts your human personal intuition
always whispers it never shouts very
hard to hear so you have to every day of
your lives be ready to hear what
whispers in your ear it very rarely
shouts and if you can listen to the
whisper and if it tickles your heart and
it’s something you think you want to do
for the rest of your life then that is
going to be what you do for the rest of
your life and we will benefit from
everything you do

you should seek failures see if you’re
playing it safe you’re not gonna win if
you’re playing it safe like that all say
you know you were cutting your little
girl better to be safe than sorry well
that’s a bunch of crap it’s not better
to be safe than sorry it’s by trying
things that you figure out how far you
can go you got to get outside the box
like it’s reported Edison tried 3000
ways before he built the incandescent
light he said he didn’t deal 3,000 times
he said there was 3000 different steps
to building a light bulb well there’s
different steps to get to where you’re
going and I really do treat winning and
losing exactly the same I do not let it
upset me

that’s not going to happen as quickly as
you want it to happen a lot of things
gonna happen that will catch you off
guard and so therefore you’ve got to
deal with and handle it as it comes and
not only that but that faith and
patience drives you into action you got
to keep moving and keep plugging away
and the Far East they have something
that’s called the Chinese bamboo tree
the Chinese bamboo tree takes five years
to grow and when they go through a
process of growing it they have to water
and fertilize the ground where it is
every day and it doesn’t break through
the ground until the fifth year okay but
once it breaks through the ground within
five weeks
it grows 90 feet tall now the question
is does it grow 90 feet tall in five
weeks or five years the answer is
obvious it grows 90 feet tall in five
years because at any time had that
person stopped watering and nurturing
and fertilizing that dream that bamboo
tree would have died in the ground how
long have you been working on your dream
it’s good and you have nothing to show
this is all you got to show people don’t
do that to you and some people ladies
and gentlemen they stop because they
don’t see instant results it doesn’t
happen quickly

go to the experts for advice don’t ask
the first next-door your mother father
brother the guy works beside you because
they don’t necessarily know there’s no
point in asking a person how to earn a
lot of money if they’re only earning ten
thousand a year they don’t know they
knew they’d probably be earning a lot
it’s like I don’t go to a sick doctor if
you want to get healthy okay so you find
someone that you can go to for advice
get a real good book and lock into that
book and start to study

I’ve said for years that that you have
to celebrate your victories and really
celebrate your mistakes and what I mean
by that is that you have to learn from
the mistakes that you make and you’ve
got to create an environment where
people are not afraid to take a risk and
not afraid to do things that are beyond
what the expectations are at the same
time you got to set up a framework for
how those things are managed and judge
and evaluate

the only way to really learn it is to do
it and you have to become expert and
there are talks about you know what is
an expert well an expert someone who
dedicates 10,000 hours to their craft
okay it’s a lot of time not over 20
years but in as compressed a period of
time as possible the advantage of going
to these investment banks is in a in a
heady environment that happens you know
100 hour work weeks great and you know
while all your friends so you graduate
college with they’re going out on Friday
night and Saturday you guess what you’re
working and on set you’re working and on
some you are working
but that’s how you build you know that
that fabric and you know to be an expert
at your craft you cannot do this
business well if you’re not an expert at
your craft

when we have had failures those have
ultimately resulted in some of the
greatest successes we’ve ever had you
talk about those particularly when
someone comes to see you and they say ya
feel really bad because this didn’t work
out okay well let me tell you about some
other things that didn’t work out that
we learned a lot from and you know let’s
pick ourselves back up and let’s figure
out what what we what we learned from
this and how we go apply that next time
you know when you’re in the zone of
doing things that no one’s ever done
before if you’re only succeeding you’re
not taking enough risks
one of the things that learn was asked
the impossible and really dream big
which we learn about people is if you
paint a very broad vision you attract
people who really want to make it happen
because there are dreamers too so you
can inspire people and with that
inspiration you get the smartest people
and they deal with a lot of stuff

I believe desire and will to win is
everything I don’t know why I’m like I
am but my butt’s always burning there’s
always something say art dadgummit
you’re supposed to go far alright
dadgummit you’re supposed to be somebody
you’re supposed to make a difference
with you lie what does the $500,000 your
person do the $50,000 your person
doesn’t do you look at outside and study
those two individuals everything seems
to be the same they both are the same
sex they both are the same age have the
same training the same positions the
same contract the same fringe benefits
they both are successful they work hard
they’re good family people make tough
commitments but what’s the difference
what does the $500,000 year person do
the $50,000 year person doesn’t do he
pays the price a little bit more he
works hard and a little bit more he’s
loyal to the company a little bit more
he believes in a little bit more he
makes Maine a little bit more he saves
money a little bit more if you want to
win in these United States you got to be
tough and you can’t quit the last thing
I’ve talked to you about today and
building this winning edge is folks if
you want to win in business you got to
be a leader leadership is everything you
show me anything
these United States that win I’ll show
you a leader at work you show me a
successful church Boy Scout true club
football team business I’ll show you
something run by leader sissy I thought
at one time in my life you had to be
smart to win I used to have these smart
people that dress so pretty and talk so
pretty and use these big words they just
intimidated me and I said aren’t you
can’t ever be that good why don’t you
just throw in the towel and go on back
coach football for living and I found
two things out about smart people I
think it’s almost impossible for a smart
person to win in business in America
today because I find smart people spend
their whole lifetime figuring things out
they always trying to figure out an
easier way in a quicker way and another
thing I found out about smart people
they just don’t get around to doing
nothing they see somebody like art
Williams everybody said well he can’t do
it and some I like that can’t do it but
he does it see folks I want you to know
almost everybody in America almost does
enough to win they almost get there they
almost over the hump they almost have it
going they almost in everything they do
almost is a way of life to almost
everybody in America but the winners do
it what do they do they do whatever it
takes to get the job done they do it and
do it and do it and do it and do it
until the job gets done and then they
talk about how great it is to be
somebody they’re proud of we need
leaders in America who can do it if you
want to become somebody do it if you
want to go and finish for yourself do it
if you want to become financially
independent do it I hear too much talk
in these United States everybody can
talk a good game we need people in
America who can do it I go all over this
country with Al weaves and I have people
say art you you count on me wonderful
just do it
alright I guarantee this is my light
last stop I’m gonna win now
SuperDuper just do it alright if I could
just have one good month and get the
ball going I know I could make it big
super just do it all right if I can just
pay off this debt I could really go
great just do it
hard if I can just sell my house do it
but how does a selling do it anyway I’m
not making any money what can I do you
just do it and do what are you do it and
do it and do it all right I give time I
win this contest

now watch my smoke grades just do it I
want to make it so bad I’m tasting what
I do you just do it all right nobody’s
pressing how can I quit doing it know my
heart I don’t know if I keep on keeping
on I’m really hurt what I do you just do

to be somebody important what would do
it then all right I’m gonna save money
so I don’t have to go through this again
great just do it hard I don’t feel like
I’ve had enough training what I do you
just do it all right my manager don’t
give me no help what I do you just do it
all right you don’t understand I was mr.
everything at my former country you
don’t mean I I have to start off down at
the bottom and do it do you
yep you really got to do it
my heart what’s the primary difference
between winners and losers the winner
the winners do it they do it and do it
and do it and do it until the job gets
done and then they talk about how great
it is to finally have achieved something
unique and how glad they are that they
didn’t quit like everybody else and how
wonderful it is to finally be somebody
they’re proud of and make a difference
with their life when you look at the
accomplishments of accomplished people
and you say boy that must have been
really hard you know when you look at
something that looks hard
that was probably easy and conversely
when you look at something that looks
easy that was probably hard and so
you’re never gonna know which is which
until you actually go and do it so just
go and do it
try learn from it you know you’ll fail
at some things that’s a learning
experience that you need so that you can
take that on to the next experience and
don’t let people who you may respect and
who you believe know what they’re
talking about don’t let them tell you it
can’t be done because often they will
tell you it can’t be done and it’s just
cuz you don’t have the courage to try

you want to raise the bar on yourself
most people won’t do that see most
people engage in low life living
low-risk living this God said if you’re
not willing to risk you cannot grow and
if you cannot grow you cannot become
your best and if you cannot become your
best you can’t be happy and if you can’t
be happy then what else is there I like
what Helen Keller said life is short and
unpredictable eat the dessert first and
so you want to begin to take some
chances you want to begin to challenge
yourself and make it okay to fail and
learn from your failures don’t allow
fear of failure and the allure the
attractiveness of playing it safe in
life to draw you in you can’t get out of
life alive you got that dot I leave here

work very very very hard to figure out
what the world’s gonna look like in five
years what will people be doing what
will your customers want where will cost
speed will be in our case what will
networks look like how important will
phones be what will the apps look like
what services and spend a little awful
lot of time on that and then take a look
at your offerings what are the strongest
ones which are the ones are going to
iterate quickly
you’re probably gonna do fine there you
understand those businesses what about
these others if you think about in the
media business there are business many
businesses that are growing very well
and others that are in great trouble
this is completely predicted five years
ago right so the leaders and the ones
that are in trouble should have right
done a five-year plan and said holy cow
what are we gonna do what are the things
we do or maybe we sell ourselves we try
something different but almost all of
these strategic shifts are predictable
using my my five year model
you know at some point in your life you
know you have to work with people where
you feel a bit insecure that’s essential
because that means you’re working with
people who are better than you and or
pushing you right and so always
encourage if you if you actually feel
very secure in what you do you know that
means you’re doing something comfortable
and you’re not pushing yourself and so
there are many many times have felt
working with people in a group am i
doing enough these people seem much
better than me and I think I think
that’s a inherent part of learning

there’s no point of us going into
something unless we can really shake up
an engine see they could make a major
difference unless it’s going to enhance
the Virgin brand if there’s any danger
of it damaging the brand in any way even
if it’s going to make us a lot of money
the cigarette companies or something
like that we just wouldn’t we wouldn’t
do it and you know because life is short
you know we want to in you know we want
to enjoy the experience so and then
we’re not you know I’ve never very
rarely about actually sat down a quart
you know we can we make a lot of money
by going into this industry
