the description below if you’re gonna
speak effectively you have to know way
more than you’re talking about
I was outside the Orpheum Theater it’s
kind of rough in downtown LA and I was
walking down the street with my wife and
this car pulled up beside us this kid
hopped out Latino kid about 19 or so and
he said are you dr. Petersen I said yes
he said oh I’m really happy to meet you
and and he shook my hand he said and
I’ve been watching your lectures and
just wait a minute wait a minute and and
I said okay okay and then he ran back to
his car and he got his dad out and they
came over and they had he had his arm
they had their arms around each other
and they were just smiling away you know
like with a real Duchenne smile a real
smile and he said been watching your
lectures I’ve really been working on
putting my relationship with my father
together and it’s really worked and so I
thought well that’s a lovely thing to
have happened when you’re walking
through rough neighborhood is that some
kid jumps out of his car and comes
rushing over and tells you how much
better his life is because he’s been
working hard on the basis of your
recommendation to fix his relationship
with his father and people are telling
me stories like this all the time and
then and the thing that’s sad about it I
think and this is what makes me
emotional it’s not only that this is so
good and and and said good at a level
that transcends politics absolutely but
that people require so little
encouragement you know there’s so many
people I see in my ed my lectures and I
have a very diverse range of people who
come to my lectures they’re starving for
encouragement and they don’t need much I
said I had this kid talk to me at a
barbecue I was at this weekend and he’s
working with delinquent kids 13 and 14
years old and he said they were pulled
out of other delinquent camps and
brought to his camp which was for the
worst delinquents and he started talking
to them about my lectures and
they’ve been watching him and now they
have a little fan club that’s based
around my lectures and they’re doing
things like talking to each other about
making their beds and cleaning up their
rooms it’s like it’s it’s unbelievable
how little genuine encouragement many
people need and how and how they have
none no one ever said to the man meant
it it’s not okay for you to be weak
loser it’s not okay and the reason it’s
not okay is because you could be way
more than that and it’s a crime
an ethical crime for you to allow all
that necessary potential to go to waste
it hurts you it hurts your family it
hurts the world really really it does
and people think oh okay I get it and
they do get it because they know at some
level why don’t we give people more
encouragement it doesn’t take that much
time out of our day to recognize someone
encourage them thank them what are we so
busy doing with our important lives that
we can’t take a few minutes to boost
someone else up I think we focus so much
on a day-to-day grind that we lose sight
of the thing that actually brings us
happiness serving others and encouraging
someone else is the fastest way to go
from having a boring ordinary day to an
extremely meaningful one for both you
and that other person I remember growing
up I was a pretty shy kid and I had this
neighbor who was four doors down for me
who was also pretty shy adult and I
remember there was one day I’ve had
maybe 10 or so interactions with him in
my life and never a full-on conversation
beyond two or three questions deep that
was the extent we’re both pretty shy but
I remember having one time when I was
outside I was with my dog and I threw
his frisbee or his stick and it went
into the tree and so my dog is sitting
at the bottom of the trees looking up he
wants a stick or isby and like how am I
gonna get it
so I decided I’m gonna climb the tree to
go get my dog stick and as I’m climbing
the tree my neighbor who I barely
– Sami going up the tree and he said hey
Evan be careful you’re a pillar of this
community and we need you to be okay you
know I don’t really know where that came
from I never really did much for the
community I wasn’t super important to it
it wasn’t really involved and I
definitely didn’t spend much time with
him for him to justify saying that but
it still made me feel good it still made
me feel important and he’s just going
from his front door to his car and he
sees me climbing the tree and he wanted
me to be careful like I think any adult
would tell any kid but just adding that
extra line in of I was a pillar of the
community
took him what five extra seconds to say
and it made my day
it made me feel important and made the
difference so that now you know 30 years
later I still remember the story and I
still tell it with a huge smile on my
face and so that actually is the juice
of life we tend to think about all these
big things that we can do as
entrepreneurs we’re optimistic we’re
we’re ambitious we have giant missions
right I want to solve the world’s
biggest problem it’s never gonna happen
we think on big scales right that’s
that’s what entrepreneur’s doing it’s
amazing and then I think it’s important
to just remember the little stuff as
well like spending five seconds to tell
somebody they’re the pillar of the
community or holding the door for
somebody or buying the coffee for the
person behind you in line just doing
some act of kindness can make you and
that person feel amazing and maybe
thirty years later they’re telling the
story about how you this super shy
person made a difference in somebody’s
life that was meaningful so I’ve got a
30 day challenge for you I’ve got a 30
day act of kindness inspiration
challenge for you that I want you to
really carefully think about and do it
will not take you that long and I
promise it’ll bring you immense joy and
satisfaction here we go step number one
make a list of 30 people think of 30
people in your life 30 people who you
have some kind of contact with even if
you are the most introverted person of
all time like me you could still make a
list of 30 different people who you have
some kind of regular contact with right
think about you
parents you know siblings friends
colleagues high school friends
university friends Facebook friends
YouTube friends like anybody think of 30
people if you are really stuck go to
your email and look at the last 30
people who have emailed you just make a
list of 30 different people who if you
sent them some kind of message at all
they would know who you were
step number two next to each person
think about how you can recognize them
how you can encourage them how you can
support them maybe it’s just a thankful
email maybe it’s just a quick text
message maybe you know they’re looking
for something in their life that you
could potentially help with maybe you go
to their Facebook page and see what
they’re posting or their Twitter account
and see what they’re talking about and
there might be some kind of connection
for you to help don’t spend five hours
necessarily on one person we’re just
looking for quick little ways of how you
might be able to offer some kind of
encouragement to each of these thirty
people so you have your list of 30 if
you’re doing it on a piece of paper
great put a little – next to each of
them and then if you’re doing it on word
document or Excel whatever you type out
their name and then the next column over
we’ve got our spot I want you to write
in there one thing you can do to
encourage them and help them and in step
number three you’re gonna do one a day
for the next thirty days you’re gonna
start your day for the next thirty days
doing an active kindness encouraging
somebody else
lifting somebody else up giving somebody
else in your life a boost that may only
take you 45 seconds to actually do
you’re gonna do it you’re gonna feel
great they’re gonna feel great and
you’re gonna recognize all that life
really has to offer now I’ve got a
really special bonus clip that I think
you’re gonna enjoy but before that
question of the day I want to know when
was the last time that somebody made you
feel encouraged I’d love to hear from
you know dr. maxwell maltz wrote a book
back around 1960 it was called
self-image psychology psycho cybernetics
it’s a phenomenal book he said it was
the greatest discovery of his generation
he was a cosmetic or reconstructive
surgeon and he found he would do work on
people he might have been a nose job or
removed a terrible scar and he noticed
that when he did that there was a
phenomenal change in their personality
but he noticed through the others he
would make a phenomenal physical change
and there was no change in their
personality and that led him to
postulate that we have two images we
have the one that’s coming back from the
mirror but we’ve got an inner image and
that inner self-image is literally
controlling our life you will find
people that have very poor self-image or
low self-esteem they won’t look you
straight in the eye they’re afraid to
shake hands with you they’re very shy
and withdrawn they goes through life
hiding from life they don’t like
themselves they don’t know themselves do
you know when a person improves their
self-image they change their entire life
their income change their relationship
change their health changes and you know
how you do that start studying you start
to find out more about you there’s
something phenomenal about you do you
know when I began to study this material
57 years ago I am very poor self-image I
had low self-esteem
I took dumb jobs I never earned any
money I never had fun I had poor
relationships and as I started to study
started to study real solid information
everything in my life started to improve
I’ve got friends all over the world
today I earn millions of dollars I’m in
my 80s and I get as much energy as a
person in their 30s you see when you
start to understand really who you are
you’re God’s highest form of creation
there’s things about you that just about
blow your mind as you start to study and
really understand
you’ll walk a little taller you’ll stand
a little straighter and you know
something you’ll enjoy a whole lot more
of life
and if you want more Jordan Peterson
check out the top 50 rules for success
video I made on him the link is right
there next to me I think you’ll enjoy it
continue to believe and I’ll see you
there
if you’re failing repeatedly it’s
possible that there’s something wrong
with the way that you’re conceptualizing the world
