What does it really mean to earn?

so we are in Palm Springs la quinta here
and I have my son here with me Tico’s I
said why not do another special episode
dedicated to my father for some of the
wisdom he shared with me I remember when
I hit the age when my dad wanted to
teach me about what it is to earn money
not just being given allowance or you
know being given money for family or
gifts he says I want to teach you what
it is store money so he tells me the
story says one day a father wants to
teach his kid what it is to make money
son wakes up in the morning says son
today father goes to son today I want
you to go out to make five dollars by
the time I come home says but that on my
kid he says it doesn’t matter you’re ten
years old you need to learn how to earn
your money well father goes to work son
goes to mom and says mom you know you
don’t want me to work I’m young I’m a
kid I shouldn’t work it’s not a good
idea can you please give me five dollars
mom gives five dollars dad comes home
says son did you make five dollars today
son says here’s my five dollars I made
five dollars today that takes the five
dollars throws in the fireplace he says
you did not make five dollars today kid
starts crying but I did you didn’t make
five dollars today tomorrow when I get
home I want you to go out and make five
dollars tomorrow daddy goes to work it
goes instead of asking mom for five
dollars because mom says no more five
dollars she’s gonna burn it goes begging
and ask uncle and a couple relatives
they give him three dollars daddy comes
home the next day says son how much
money did you make today says that I
made three dollars today that it takes
three dollars throws in the fireplace so
you can make your money today
the following day said I want you to
make five dollars today goes to what kid
goes to mommy no money from mommy uncle
relatives no money goes across the
street to the mechanic says can you
please give me five dollars so I’m not
gonna give you five dollars but I’ll
give you a penny for every stand back
you move from there to there so the kid
says no problem he starts moving
sandbags he’s a ten year old kid only
moves 100 sandbags he makes a buck that
day dad comes home he’s got all these
coins hands are dirty he’s sweating he’s
dirty says dad I made a dollar today
that takes a buck throws in the
fireplace you know what the kid does he
reaches out starts grabbing the coins
himself father pulls him back hugs and
he says you don’t need to do that son
today I know for a fact you more work
for that dollar that’s what I mean by
earning your money and I learned a story
back when I was in Iran 19 years old I
think many times we forget to teach that
lesson to our kids and the best thing I
can teach this kid is learn how to be
independent and stand on his own by
earning his only coming if he does that
exchange in his time for the money he
makes he’ll be free forever to come it’s
my message of the week to you
