The Secret Sauce to Strong Relationships

some of the best business relationships
I have I’ve never done business with but
I’ve given them the most incredible
referrals that helped them out and they
gave me some incredible referrals that
helped me out but both parties are
winning and so the relationship gets
deeper and deeper and deeper as both
people so when it comes down to you know
creating new partnerships new
relationships that comes up to two
things one of them is you putting
yourself in places where you can meet
new people and into what you do to water
this relationship to grow to all
different levels Byron and I when I’m
here with Tommen Paul and Mike ends at
Breckenridge Byron and I met I want to
say six years ago we were having dinner
in Orlando and he sat next to me I had
no idea who he was he had no idea I was
later on I found out that he runs one of
the biggest online term insurance
companies that you’ll see when they sell
insurance online on TV you see them all
the time that’s what he does and so he
recommended books I recommended books
he’s the first person that recommended
me to both the high hypomanic edge and
then all of a sudden I submit a lot of
stuff in common and that relationship
continued over and over and over again
eventually got diplomas that hey what if
we decided to do something together now
that may take five years from now ten
years from now you’re from now six
months from now
but relationships got established
because we kept seeking to see if we
have a lot of things in common and now
years later now we got so many things in
common it’s not even funny
values principles sports politics
finances economy you know philosophy
there are a lot now there’s
disagreements as well but we can go and
have deeper conversations which for me
are some of my favorite type of
conversations to have and it’s led us to
this we have finally made it to the top
of the mountain mom is right we’re here
see what happens here it’s gonna be fun
to explore
we just got done with the spot mile
Blair which is that my say know what
kinda like the movie right the movie
except it’s not shot here but why they
named it that um and I got to tell you
this was amazing but probably need a
little bit more conditioning for this
what do you think Paul absolutely yeah I
think use well but it was good exercise
here’s the view that you do it for this
oh I see what he’s doing I’m just
debating whether to go left take should
i straddle this one or go left buddy
that is not a good idea
oh good job buddy
there you see that Oh send it this is
this is good viral what’s this called we
are about to embark upon Mohawk Lakes
hike it’s one of the most scenic and
beautiful hikes in the planet what are
we gonna see we’re gonna see waterfalls
we’re gonna see wildlife we’re gonna see
the most beautiful lakes you’ve ever
seen in your life possible bears not
likely but maybe but I am ready as I
said we have a whistle in case we do see
a bear run away from any trees or rocks
there may be a couple here we go we who
[Music]
maybe the life
still made it good time this is where
all good ideas start roll let it roll
bet is on I’m betting Patrick he can’t
move this tiny little rock because I’m
you little ride he’s such a beast you
know a former bodybuilder weightlifter
mister strength all this muscle mass
right let’s see what a beast he really
is Michael but it’s heavy
yeah it’s heavy it’s heavy Doug it is
[Music]
so where we a sixth and final of the six
Mohawk Lakes some say seven but this is
the final lake I’ve pulled it up on the
Google map
un-freakin’-believable this isn’t as
easy how did this canyon get formed this
Canyon got formed and the priestess
Sierra
when glacier was called glacier 226 they
were they were labeled back then slid
right down here sliced all this rocks
off scoop this out went down three
different levels making two Lakes on two
of those levels so you have one two two
and one making the six lakes of the
so why do this because a lot of times
people say well the outcome is we have
to do business together and that’s why
we’re doing this not at all
some of the best business relationships
I have I’ve never done business with but
I’ve given them the most incredible
referrals that help them out and they
gave me some incredible referrals that
helped me out but both parties are
winning and so the relationship gets
deeper and deeper and deeper as both
people are winning a lot of time so what
can I get from this guy what can I get
from this guy what can I get from this
guy you give you become a connector you
give as much as you can to people you’re
doing business with the return you get
from it is generally gonna be 10x
because eventually they’re gonna sit
there and say let me let me introduce
this guy to XYZ and that one contact and
completely change the face your business
when you take these bikes from the
bottom of Swann Mountain Road up the
hill it’s about a 450 foot climb then
we’re gonna have a very very 450 450
feet of vertical time we’re going to do
some nice descending then we’re gonna do
a little up and down up and down then
we’re gonna go to Keystone which is
basically slightly uphill come back go
downhill we’re gonna go around Dillon
Lake we’re gonna go across Dillon dam
Dillon dam right by the bridge where the
dam is and the dam so you know you’re
tough when you weren’t a leopard what do
you think about this Mike that’s pretty
hard that’s hardcore right leopard
do-rag I mean this doesn’t get brings
captain’s log around the bike trail and
[Music]
Captain’s Log no boy no bikes dead again
so super time
Just My Luck get a flat tire you’re
putting the car in uber now if you do
that us like insanity okay so question
guys lunch time I’m really curious who
is your all-time favorites late-night TV
host Kimball Fallon Carson Letterman
Leno or someone else gotta meet Carson
you’re gonna say Constantine hands down
get the ax Benedict you took over from
Jack Paar and made it into something
who’s close second for you
might be found might be found Tom how
about yourself me it was all Carson from
Karnak to the see no I changed that
Letterman you put a little man I like
Letterman number two leprechauns yeah
what’s what do you say that because I
put person number one person made the
rules and established the path that
everybody else walked on but Mike number
two would be Letterman on the first two
years lovely to CBS phenomena
Carson number one yeah number two’s mm
is this personable Menomonee Letterman
did some things that were so original
right I liked him from the very very
first came out he had a daytime show yes
stupid daytime show and then he who took
the nighttime show you know took him Wow
before he only caught on I was a huge
fan of Letterman before he had his
late-night show over lentils so when
Leno and going out she was obviously the
better stand-up guy but as an
interviewer and as a guy who can think
on his feet and say that say the right
thing at the right speed ratings were
upside down to three years for Leno to
catch up right an NBC I mean Warren Moon
Wow maybe a case study tom honestly
maybe case study what do you think it’s
[Music]
and today we’re gonna see I’m gonna do
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
the key to great wedge play is where you
bring in your wedge all the way through
forward pass the first ball here’s a
shot that will show you if you’re doing
[Music]
[Applause]
two balls at once no he’s got some
skills that is how you know you’re
bringing your wedge all the way through
the first ball takes off and the wedge
continues on path for the second ball
takes off now what do you thing about
these trick shots you have no clue what
the hell they’re doing relax watch this
[Applause]
[Music]
[Music]
we had a blast thank you both and
environ due to bomb had a blast with you
bro it has been a great time big byron
thank you so much so when you get
invited to vibrance place when you leave
you get a shirt that says I survived
four days at Byron’s feeling the burn
camp Breckenridge you literally do
pretty much every one of those things
while you’re here and you’re gonna come
across some of these guys here so one of
the reasons why it took a couple days to
come and spend time here with a few
friends is because I made a decision a
long time ago anybody I do business with
at the highest level meaning and
investor AC type employee and executive
someone’s that’s gonna be an equity
position type of a person in the company
I I want to travel with you I want to
get to know you I want to know how you
are I want to know sensitivities I want
to know you know conversations about
life I want to know if you can handle
conversations that have nothing to do
with business and because that’s what’s
gonna happen when my the people that are
in our firm that are gonna talk to you
how was your conversation gonna be what
are your belief system does it match
their values do the principles match do
you agree with the philosophies on how
we do our business this is what’s work
this is what’s area we need help with
how would you be able to help this area
whatever you would give it up and there
is no time limit like it’s not like the
next hour we’re talking about this
sometimes you need to be able to go
deeper layers of conversation to get to
the real point of can this really become
a reality and that generally doesn’t
happen in a 1 hour or 2 hour business
meeting again I’m not talking about
everybody there are a lot of 20 minute
meetings have a lot of 10 minute
meetings they have a lot of 30 minute
meetings we have but somebody at the
higher level I need some time with you
and it saves you so much drama one
travel with the person you want to hire
to get to know their wives if you don’t
order their husbands if you don’t do
those two things I don’t recommend doing
business I don’t recommend it cuz I’ve
done it without that and hasn’t worked [Music]
