Patrick Bet-David at VidCon 2017: 3 Friends, an Idea and 2.3 Million Subscribers (ClevverStyle)

all right so today will be clever style
2.3 million subs yeah a shitload of
music you guys gotta tell us about
clever sounds clever is a brilliant
actually spans more than just clever
denial we have over news its levers
maybe and all our channels together
total over 11 million subscribers so
clever style is one of our biggest
priorities but it’s all part of what we
do and Leonard Jenner just amazing how
eleven million subscribers could you’re
trying to grab something eleven million
subscribers could be a country in some
places and you guys had that as an
audience how amazing I think to do so
panic lever massive brands like blowing
away in many people for sure Trudeau is
shaken in there first let me talk about
that wanna see what do you think about
the awesome I think we’re the right deal
so you thinking like you guys watch TV
at all are you still watching – yeah I
only watch it just to see what’s
happening in his face not as a normal
consumer and I think Dalton I really
enjoyed I was an intern she was a talent
but became talent it’s awesome and I had
always wanted to be pal and we always
wanted to work in television and that
was our main goal in life and then we
couldn’t get those jobs because people
are in TV jobs are there for like
centuries they don’t leave those jobs so
there were opportunities so we were
forced to go into digital because that
was the only place that we could get
experience
exposure and we got in it right just the
right time because everything just
started growing for us or lever and the
last four to five years been used for us
so I think you know this goes to show in
life when you meet obstacles and you
don’t get opportunities that you think
you want or should get usually the
opportunity is right in front of you
might be the best thing you know you
never know what what life brings you how
did the idea come about when did you
guys look let’s do something what’s the
idea I’ve been at clever almost 10 years
guys unbelievable when we first started
clever and creating video content
it was very experimental
in many ways what we’re doing still is
an experiment I think when you stop
growing and changing and feel like I’ve
reached the pinnacle I know what I’m
doing
you’re already irrelevant pointless so
really we started for entertainment news
and back ten years ago the big TV show
the big brands we’re absolutely not
covering 40 year old Justin Bieber the
Miley Cyrus Hannah Montana we were like
you know if there’s an audience that’s
young that it’s completely unheard and
that is what we talk to new Jedi so much
internet access and so much time exactly
and so that’s really where we started
and our new friend with last month had
97 million views 97 million really and
one more of what we do and then as a
result it’s a success had the
opportunity to build bunch of other
channels that showcase our talent as
October has ordered tonalities and we’ve
been able to broaden our horizon so it’s
been a really long process sold the
company we market another company we
were in a garage when we started and
like now we have a ha ha ha hey y’all
yeah it’s going to get physical yeah and
then I think in general that our
personality driven content is kind of
like the new reality TV because now when
you watch reality TV on TV it is so over
produced is no fake that people attorney
YouTube to be real personalities and
they just like you very mad arrow JAMA
and eating you know
yeah I said you guys flow very well man
when you see a couple of the videos
you’re flown very well together so when
did you know this thing is taking off
like there’s something that could turn
into this big of an audience
96 million in a month I mean we just
want to keep doing more and more like
we’ve never like Johnson said earlier
like we never feel like to reach a point
where it’s we’ve done it you know and I
think that’s the key to being successful
is to always be hungry wanting to grow
more make more do more
and I hope that none of us ever feel
like we’ve made it whether I would say
there have been and just like from a
business standpoint or with PRC employ
marketing there have been some moments
where like wow we’re finally getting
what were some of those what we’re
finding honestly something as small as
getting into a movie drum like think
about it ten years ago the internet was
like cat videos and like double rainbow
they were like so you can’t come and
interview a celebrity of your from the
internet Li rep and for us to finally be
able to get accepted and the Hollywood
world is a really really big deal I know
we got the Twilight Saga jacket it was
like life-changing for us and our brand
and our audience and then along the way
like getting acquired made a big
difference emerging and becoming a part
of goodbye has opened our world because
you have resources like like charcoal
cash like but being able to hire more
people so what’s the matter what are you
doing that what’s next for you
we’re developing a bunch of you shows
right now currently we have a brand new
fitness show that we serve mine we
travel across the country possibly world
if anybody wants a small event to try
out new and weird fitness workout muffin
and we have a lot of different shows in
developing film but which keeps Allah
only we’re still to be doing news that’s
part of our bread and butter of what we
do so that will change or still have you
doing style and beauty constant – so and
we know there’s room for us – as we get
older – maybe even grow grow up with the
brand and venture out and maybe some
some niches that we haven’t done in the
past so really we feel like the world is
our oyster when it comes to
that’s really been cool didn’t see it
something like VidCon where we do know
that like 96 million 7 million just on
one channel though it got like 200 a
month 200 million but in general just
seeing millions of views it is very much
a number on a computer screen so coming
to something like this we’re coming up
to you and like been watching for years
and they are very willing to be like
I’ve been watching over the last five
years and they are grown so it’s fun to
see that and put faces to the different
videos
how’s your family feel about this whole
thing mom that any good stories you’re
honestly starting to understand I mean I
think my family my parents are very hip
and like in texting and stuff my grandma
still asked me like where like keeping
some in the computer later but you have
to think about it like as even our
parents are being forced to like catch
up with technology which I don’t I think
we currently take for granted what we
have to live through like I remember the
days I did not have my elbow like for a
young person now they would not even be
able to your home without some vertical
advice so our families I think our
family we’re proud of us
oh absolutely I think when I first
started it was very much like so you’re
working for you too and I’m like will
you follow you from Beverly Hills or not
now ok god yep Camarillo definitely my
mom’s familiar with like the
entertainment about some areas are not
familiar here at all my dad’s like I
don’t even know how to wash your stuff
I’m like not into the Internet
of art when Josh and I were on CBS The
Amazing Race because before last and we
were on television every week that was
the point my dad was like you’ve made it
and I wasn’t really you know we didn’t
get paid for that right the job that I
get paid for you don’t think it’s a real
job but the job I did for free on TV
that’s what comprised the right yeah I’m
like Doblin side like you know we take
our access for granted and I think our
parents are still trying to catch up so
what would you say to somebody out there
that’s watching this thing I’m afraid to
get on YouTube but I kind of want to
what do you so for my life now what if
somebody says it’s a little bit there is
it I mean in the Internet in general I
would say if you have a question Google
get someone else
somewheres have a nagging question show
and probably it’s not a dancer but so
think about the fact that there’s so
many people that you can reach on the
internet that you wouldn’t normally
reach that you think that you’re alone
and you might not relate to someone but
like there are people out there
searching for someone that they can
relate to it honestly the only
difference between people like the three
of us and then people on our team and
then all the other people out there who
are super intelligent super smart like
have what it takes is that we’re
literally just doing you know if you
want to do it just do it you guys are
using phones it’s not the you keeping it
simple we have high production quality
shows we have like phones we shoot out
or show people a pound so like if you
have an idea just the last question for
you give me one thing that work and one
thing that was a successful failure me
get completely flop what works what
didn’t work what work was being just
utterly and completely art done showing
us messing up it doesn’t matter if you
do a good job people want to be real
people so I think that’s something to
work I think on the flip side what
generally doesn’t work with are lots of
whether you’re doing new content or
personality content is when it’s like
overly produced to the next level I
think that even if you’re trying to do
them something that’s a sort data like
resent a news they still want to feel
like they’re smart older sister telling
them about it not someone who’s like
talking down to them so I think coming
from a perspective of authenticity is
important and anything outside of that
is probably not and if it might not fail
but it’s only not going to go as well
and all over it which has over produced
she doesn’t necessarily mean without the
cameras a good lighting equipment and
gets more than content like the content
should it be over produce we just did a
docu-series with the first time we’ve
never done anything like that before and
we did it behind him in a style that you
would see on steel C or a detail and we
were worried because it was so produced
as far as the equipment and the creative
you know the processes but the creative
itself was really on it and so I think
honestly and the authenticity is where
you can go for it we work with a lot of
brands the clever I think that totally
transparently the way that we’ve enabled
our production quality and have we don’t
use amazing shows we’re launching is
because we are partnering with huge
company or public do not and I think I
apply source or as collaboration okay
got it
so I have you know in the past week on
not recently you know work on videos
with halters that have been so far
outside of what we should have been
doing I mean we’re not what I would have
you
success as far as content goes and now
we really make a point and what we’re
going to work with a sponsor we want
them to better and we want to bet that
so that it’s a great relationship
because again like people can tell
things so like let’s give them something
really the most pretty boy commercial
you know we’re not in the business of
being a corner whole company we want to
make good content with a partner and
want to Karger alongside with that make
it fun not just make it yeah we don’t
want to sell stuff to our audience but
we don’t commonly believe it so you’re
not you’re not selling stuff in every
video to somebody okay
what a great system you guys got well
listen thank you for the time lady
energy so amazing so really appreciate
you guys coming on value tainment I
share them with us how you got to 2.3
million steps and you’re not even
thinking you’re doing anything yet so so
you’re going to see them at 10 million
plus in no time so again thanks ladies
thank you yes [Music]
