Fresh Prince of Bel Air- Uncle Phil’s Role as a Father

tell me uh if you were me what would you
do
um I don’t know uh forget the whole
thing get us a couple jet ski no you
big-eared freeloader
you take the little square-headed cousin
here and you flying Geoffrey and you
bring him back or they’ll never find
your bodies and I’m a judge I can make
it happen with the recent passing of
James Avery I wanted to dedicate this
episode to Uncle Phil from Fresh Prince
Hollywood’s done a great job having a TV
dad every decade or so for young adults
and teenagers to watch if you think
about 70s I think about Mike Brady 80s
could be Bill Cosby and 90s it was Uncle
Phil and when you think about Uncle Phil
and you think about Hollywood and you
think about Fresh Prince of bel-air
there is a scene in there that is known
in Hollywood as one of the greatest
performances done in a example of the
importance of father-son relationship it
I’m sorry well you know what actually
this works out better for me you know
this slimmies the summer come to class
we’re next nuttin you know well it’s all
right to be angry
hey why should I be mad for saying at
least he said goodbye this time I just
wish I hadn’t wasted my money buying a
stupid present I’m sorry I’d you know if
there was something that I hey you know
what
you’re in gonna do no nothin Uncle Phil
hey you know ain’t like I’m still five
years old you know ain’t like I’m gonna
be sitting up every night asking my mom
when’s daddy coming home you know who
needs him he wasn’t there to teach me
how to shoot my first basket but I
learned dinner hey I got pretty damn
better too did non fulfilled it got
through my first day without him right I
learned how to drive I learn how to
shave I learned how to fight without him
I had 14 great birthdays without him he
never even sent me a damn car I need him
then and I’ll need him now will now you
know what Uncle Phil I’m gonna get
through college without him I’m gonna
get a great job without him
i’ma married me a beautiful honey and
I’m having a whole bunch of kids I’ll be
a better father than he ever was and I
sure as hell don’t needle for that cuz I
ain’t a damn thing he could ever teach
me about how to love my kids how come
although this may be a TV show
unfortunately many men have been raised
without the luxury or the privilege of
having a father and I think one of the
things that you see from the senior on
uncle Phil’s part that James everyplace
is a fact that it’s okay to be
frustrated it’s okay
to be hurt it’s okay to be angry but I
think he also gives the example as
somebody who grew up in rural South and
he became an attorney and made a name
for himself he also challenges as a
father should to not use that as a way
to hurt yourself and become a victim
rather use that as a way to prove
yourself that you’re capable of doing
something bigger in life and go get you
on victories as a father myself as well
as twelve-year the father’s out there I
think there’s four qualities that we can
all learn from the role of Uncle Phil
that James Avery plays strength
discipline sense of humor and compassion my message of the week to you
