TO or FOR??? English Prepositions | English with Lucy

do you ever get confused about when to
use to and when to use for well this
video should help you understand how and
when to use them
I’ll start off by going through three
cases where both 4 and 2 can be used in
different ways I’ll then talk you
through 6 situations where you can use 2
and 6 situations where you can use for
and hopefully you’ll finish the video
knowing much more about 2 and 4 and
feeling much more confident when
speaking now I will tell you that Here I
am referring to 2 and 4 as prepositions
but in some of these cases they are not
considered prepositions but for
simplicity we’re going to treat them as
if they were I don’t want to get too
grammatical with you because I honestly
don’t think it would add anything to
this lesson I just want you to learn and
understand English ah important remember
to connect with me on all my social
media obviously subscribe to me here on
my youtube channel you can also like my
page on Facebook I post regularly I also
have my Instagram page which I recently
started and also to my Chinese followers
I have Weibo
so all of the information is just here
so many of you will know that I am an
English teacher here in London and the
vast majority of my students are Spanish
and a phrase that I hear rather a lot
rather too much actually if I’m delano
for the learn English now I want to help
you guys here and the first point is
long long written I live in London
London London doesn’t exist long gone is
not a place as far as I’m concerned so
I’m London so the next point is four to
none I hear many many students use for
with the infinitive and this is wrong
this is something you have to completely
delete from your brain forget it never
use it again because it doesn’t exist in
English so in this video I’m going to
teach you when and how to use for and
when
how to use to okay so when we are
expressing reason we can use both four
and two
so let’s talk about going to the
supermarket I went to the supermarket to
buy apples I went to the supermarket for
apples so the biggest difference here is
that in the first example two refers to
the action we’re using a verb in the
second example for refers to the noun
apples for apples or to buy apples okay
so both can be used so now I’ve got a
question for you I move to London
learn English would it be for or would
it be to well learn is a verb so it
would of course be two okay now on to
the next one which is ever so slightly
more complicated and this is all about
indicating a recipient and a recipient
is someone who received something so I
made a cake for felicity I gave the cake
to Felicity felicity
sold it to Ellie Felicity and Ellie are
my best friends by the way I hope they
don’t mind being used in my lesson so
with made we use for but with gave and
sold we use two and that’s because these
verbs show a movement or a transfer of
something from one place to another or
one person to another so I gave the Cape
to Felicity I passed it from me to her
but originally I made it for her I
created it for her there’s no movement
in this verb okay now on to expressing
intention and this is another situation
in which both 4 & 2 can be used but in
different ways so I asked her to give me
your keys I asked her for the keys
much like
1/4 goes with a noun and 2 goes with the
verb it’s really quite simple I ask
someone to do something or I ask someone
for something ok so here I’ve got some
general situations where we use 2 and
not for now these aren’t fixed rules we
don’t have many fixed rules in English
but this should help you to be able to
communicate more efficiently so the
first one one that we’ve already
discussed motive or reason with a verb I
came here to talk to you talk is the
verb so we use 2 then we have telling
the time let’s meet at 10:00 to 9:00
10:00 to 9:00 when I say it I think 10
to 9 distance it’s about 10 kilometers
from my house to yours it’s about 10
kilometers from my house to your house
comparing I prefer apples to oranges
I prefer apples to oranges
you’ll notice that I’m saying Chuck not
to this is another mistake that
non-natives tend to make destination we
are going to France we are going to
France and the one we looked at before
transferring
so to give to send to sell among many
other options I sent it to her yesterday
I sent it to her yesterday to her
yesterday ok now I have six situations
where you should use for again not
strict rules
it’s just indications that will help you
improve your communication in English so
the first one is if something’s
beneficial or detrimental isn’t in times
goofy or bad for you so drinking water
is good for you ok or drinking too much
wine is bad for you and then we have
periods of time I lived in Spain for a
couple of years then we have schedules
and arrangements I’ve made an
appointment for the fourth of May
now this is important although I wrote
forth may I say the thoughts of May NOAA
says I’ve made an appointment for 4th
May the 4th of May Americans would say
it made fourth but in Britain we say the
4th of May right motive or reason with a
noun
this we’ve discussed at the beginning of
the video I went to the shop for milk
then we have doing something to help
someone
so can I carry that for you then I have
function with an ING verb so a spoon is
used for eating or wine is made for
drinking you know me
thank you for watching this video I hope
it’s helped you understand a little more
about how to use 2 and 4 make sure you
connect with me on all my social media I
love communicating with all of you and
check back soon for another video
then I have function
