Teaching & Learning Tips & Experience! | Extra-long subtitled English listening practice

[Music]
hello everyone and welcome back to you
English with Lucy today I’ve got a very
special guest this is Harry and he has a
well along with your friend Charlie who
can’t be here today yeah very sad and
they have the English language Channel
real English with real teachers firstly
I must apologize for my voice or if I
cough because I’m getting over a bad
case of bronchitis at the moment I’m
quite enjoying the voice actually I feel
quite sexy effects it’s like right thank
you yeah yeah yeah
so especially in person it’s very sexy
today Harry and I are going to have a
little chat so this is going to be
really good for your conversation skills
because you get to analyse what we’re
saying and how we say it it’s also going
to be great for your listening skills
because I have lovingly written
subtitles for you so make sure you
switch those on and if you really want
to improve your listening try watching
once without subtitles and then once
again with subtitles so that you can see
what you didn’t pick up so Harry tell me
how did you get into teaching English ah
so I went travelling okay in 2014 I went
to South East Asia amazing which
countries did you visit there I went to
Thailand Cambodia Vietnam and Laos oh
what can you say in Cambodian um robot
robot young Harry robot Nam Lucy mmm oh
cool oh cool thanks okay so if you’re
Cambodian and watching this let us know
he did yeah sorry because I was really
wrong so you around Asia man where did
you go so I just stayed around Asia okay
but one day I said to my friend JJ who I
was travelling with I said AJ yeah hey
JJ he’s from Berlin right Jojo yeah
so we were we’re in Cambodia and I said
to JJ
I really want to do some voluntary
voluntary teaching okay you did it for
free I did it for free how honorable I
know so honorable yeah and so I I found
a school okay I was like JJ why don’t we
go in here and then we walked in the
school and said we want to volunteer and
you literally pick a school walked in
just walked in yeah amazing mental if
there was no what they guarding that’s
that took a lot of balls and serious
balls
they took a lot of balls it means it
took a lot of courage lot of courage
yeah something scary you were very
courageous very courageous yes and by
Monday though the Thursday and I said I
want to be a volunteer and then by
Monday I had my own class of 20
screaming Cambodian kids sounds idyllic
yeah it was it was mental and so how did
you learn to teach because teaching is
difficult because you guys might not
know this but in English schools in our
education system we don’t learn grammar
so I think both of us have had to learn
grammar ourselves yeah to be able to
then teach it to you guys so how did you
go about teaching learning grammar so I
basically struggled through the
voluntary experience but loved the
process of teaching okay and it was nice
seeing their faces light up when they
learn something and I really enjoyed
that so then when I got back from
traveling I did a teaching qualification
which qualification did you do I did the
team sole which oh okay I did the TEFL
okay the test well yeah okay
would you as a Trinity won the Trinity
one bouquet yeah yeah so you have
teaching practice like six hours of
teaching practice ladies assess yeah I’m
more similar yeah yeah and how many
hours in total with yours
it was done over one month over one
month intensive 95 course yeah I really
so most English as a second language
teachers will have done a 120 our one
month intensive course it’s pretty
intense in it I mean Wars yeah
absolutely
yeah it’s difficult but it means that we
we understand how to teach grammar but
that’s not enough on its own you really
have extra research which is how I got
into YouTube because I was watching
videos how do I explain this grammar to
people and then I thought I’d like to do
that too
so I started yeah yeah absolutely why
did you start YouTube so me and my
friend Charley who met at University we
both studied psychology and analyzing me
absolutely yeah yeah I notice you’re a
bit stressed at the moment yes I am a
little bit how did you know so well you
know
go easy you’re working too much oh maybe
so we met a university we got on really
well
yeah and then we kept in contact after
okay Charlie went to Chile where he
started working as a TEFL teacher okay
um and after I went travelling I did my
qualification mm-hmm I went to Spain and
what you there yeah where did you go in
in Spain I was in the Basque Country so
in the North yeah yeah yeah luckily
South yeah Jane City yeah every year
Seville yeah it’s very different climate
isn’t it sounded to do I never went to
northern Spain and I never been and it’s
on my bucket list
ah you need to go it’s amazing it rains
a lot in the Basque Country it’s it
seems like it’s constantly raining yes
it’s like am I like yeah liking them so
it wasn’t a big change go in there and
adapting to the weather because England
rains a lot as well but yeah back to how
we’re going through the YouTube stuff so
Charlie my partner who isn’t here today
because he
in shoulder he had he was an online
teacher in Chile or Chile and he
continued doing that and he’s been doing
that for about three years now okay
and I went to Spain and worked there for
a year in the Basque Country and then I
started doing some online classes as
well and we set up the YouTube channel
to give current English – to the world
because we realize that having used
textbooks and all of the language you’d
learn isn’t very current absolutely we
don’t really use it anymore no I totally
agree as soon as a book is published
it’s out of date you know the phrase
sorry just one question the phrase it’s
raining cats and dogs you know and the
textbooks it’s like the prime idiomatic
example yeah and it’s just no one uses
it but everyone knows the phrase so
exactly what was what would you say
instead of it’s raining cats and dogs in
a more English way I would say it’s
pissing it down and if it’s really
raining no what would you do
alright it’s pouring it down okay it’s
chucking it down okay that would be
better yes pissing it down you’d
probably say that with your friend with
my friends yeah yeah yeah okay yeah or
you could say it’s bucketing it down
pocketing it down or it’s raining it’s
raining bucket bucket now how can you
get that again watching it’s down
it down yeah yeah so I’m a big
advocate for the real English with
really with real teachers Channel I’ve
said a lot of their videos on my social
media and the reason I do that is
because I think that you guys are really
unique I think that the channel is
completely different there’s a lot of
teachers on YouTube doing very similar
things sometimes I’m part of that as
well and I like that there’s two of you
so you have conversations you go out in
the real world I mean you’ve done a
video out on the streets of London
mmm yeah you guys can click the card up
here and you can go and check that out
it’s a really good video
I think it’s the top video just hit
10,000 views yeah yeah and easy
yeah yeah exactly and yeah these I don’t
have an ever learner of Spanish the most
valuable resource I think for a learner
is having a video of native speakers
speaking at the normal pace
exactly and having the luxury of having
subtitles yes and better even teachers
who can pick out the interesting phrases
that we use yes by those native speakers
if you guys do a lot of live YouTube
videos don’t need you having one every
Wednesday
absolutely yeah yeah Wednesday and I
like these live videos I wish said unto
my students because they’ll do one about
idioms or something use it in context
explain the meaning and it’s just a
really natural organic way to learn
English thank you yeah every Wednesday
we do these live lessons and we’ve
recently started studying songs in class
I think the other week we did the Sam
Smith song stay with me yes and before
that we did an Ed Sheeran song and so
we’re giving you language which is used
right now by pop stars by famous people
in the media and by normal native
speakers and we analyze that and give
you the chance to participate with us
much like Lucy does on a Sunday yes yeah
I do I do a couple of live lessons I
think I’m changing the day actually
we’re coming right there won’t be a
Sunday anymore because I need my weekend
oh so that’s good yeah unfortunately
things are getting in the way so so
you’ve worked in quite different
countries you went to Spain and in
Cambodia yeah and what are the different
struggles that your respective
prospective students they’re obviously
all respected the respected student had
with English and so now that I work
online is an online teacher my students
are from everywhere nationalities you
have I’ve got Turkish student actually
in
of South Koreans and Vietnamese I’ve
gone lots and lots of excuse me I’ve got
lots and lots of Spanish students okay
Latinos
I have Italian students my god students
a whole range Russian literally from
everywhere and but the majority of
mushrooms are Spanish ok because I can
speak some Spanish yeah which help yes
absolutely you can understand why
they’re making specific errors ok so you
teach loads of different nationalities
but if they’re one thing that you think
everyone struggles with mmm yeah so for
those speakers who speak phonetic
languages for example Spanish or
Italians quite phonetic and Turkish can
be as well and yeah it’s not completely
like Spanish I don’t think we have the
same information points on their written
language but yeah it’s very phonetic but
English isn’t so that’s always a
struggle but I think that’s that’s quite
obvious and lots of Spanish people know
that they have difficulties with that
but I also think grammar is a big thing
yes we are not we manage people yes well
one thing I always think is my Spanish
students are fantastic at grammar ok
yeah I mean they can tell you the
pluperfect whatever mm of everything
yeah ok but what they can’t do is put it
into action
yeah absolutely they know what a theory
but the practice in there and I don’t
know if it’s related to their education
system they’re very exam based learn and
practical and I think that shows in
their English it’s very true and having
taught so many Spanish people
I think the way they use the present in
Spanish is a lot more flexible yeah than
ours
for example there’s three ways I’ll give
you three sentences in Spanish which are
all using the present but in English we
wouldn’t use the
present any of them so my boy
for example mm-hmm we would say I’m
going yeah and yeah there you go yeah
there you go so I will help you yeah
desde hace dos anos v Bakke exactly so
he’s a ball and that means I’ve lived
here for three years
so they’re very flexible of that so I
also find that my de speakers say I’m
living here for three years
yes they do the translation they leave a
correlate quite literally yeah so that’s
that’s often issue
have you ever taught Turkish people no
not really I I really only have taught
Spanish mm-hmm okay
both in England and got a really good
Spanish community in London so you
should teach them in London yeah yeah
okay so when I whenever I meet teachers
I always like to ask them if they’ve
ever had any really embarrassing
teaching moment
okay have you had a li I’ve had I’ve had
a few
oh no yeah what’s happened yeah well
once when I was teaching in Spain I was
I was the last teacher in the school on
Monday evenings okay so I had to lock up
the school and the receptionist would
leave about nine o’clock and I would
leave at 10 o’clock and when the
receptionist left
she would always lock the door and I was
in my classrooms two lovely ladies to
students and this wasn’t planned and
then I realized I had forgotten my keys
so I was stuck in the school with these
two girls like how long does a long
were you there for an hour over for an
hour did you have a girl then to come
back yeah we had to wake up one of the
managers at the school to come and let
us out of school so that was really that
was really embarrassing but luckily they
were very forgiving and basque ladies
and i appreciate them
to this day okay and I also want to test
your language skills do you speak any
Spanish pero Mira mucho para Gwen’s ax I
Venga Venga bla okay quieres que take a
take ante una cancion mexicana Claro
pero en con acento Mexicano
oh oh oh espanol mexicana mexicanas he
can say not fair okay a la la cámara a
la cama okay a la cama hace falta Katie
diga que me muero
por tener algo contigo es que no se da
cuenta de lo mucho que me questa okay
Juanita 4000 a thank you so much for
