Spelling differences – American Vs British English

hi guys welcome to another lesson today
we’re talking about spelling yeah it’s a
boring topic but we usually get
questions like why is color spelt like
this and not like this why when I write
in Microsoft Word I’m trying to write
travelling or traveled and it wants to
correct me it wants me to write it with
one L not too well in today’s class
we’re going to explain it all the
differences between American and British
spelling so let’s start with the obvious
ones words like color flavor neighbor
humor to spell these words the British
Way must end in oh you are the American
Way will not have the you you’ll just be
Oh our next one is words which end in
ISE or ize which one is correct I’m sure
a lot of you in writing an assignment
for university have googled which is
correct I se or i ze well the answer is
simple i se is the British way of
spelling it I said II would be the
American Way which is correct
it doesn’t matter of course if you go to
a British university you should stick to
the British spelling the same if you go
to an American University the American
spelling the important thing is
continuity if you start writing with the
British Spelling’s you should continue
that way and the same if you start with
the American Spelling’s it’s fine it’s
not wrong it’s just different but you
should continue in that style so words
like apologise organize or recognize the
British Way would be spelt like this the
American Way like this and that’s also
true of words which end with y se or Y
is Eddy
British way American Way
next up words which end in a vowel then
L for example travel now if you’ve been
trying to type travelled with two L’s
and it says you’re wrong you’re not
wrong with the two L’s that’s the
British Way just one L it’s the American
Way next one words like defense license
offense in British English this ends in
E and C E but in American English its ii
and s/ii
another one is words which end in r e
for example Center Theatre fiber liter
meter these words which end in our a if
they’re British they end in our E but in
American yet you’ve probably seen it
ends in E are still the same
pronunciation but in American English
spell like this last one words which end
in O gue words like analogue dialogue
catalogue in British English it will end
in OG u E but in American spelling
usually it just finishes with G now some
people say that American English is a
simplified version of British English
well to be honest I kind of agree
because their spelling with American
English seems like it makes more sense
than British English British English
seems more traditional for example this
word is about like this in American
English the same with this this and this
in American English are spelled these
ways okay thanks for watching our lesson
