hello I’m Emma from room English and in
this lesson I found an American all the
way down here in Australia and I thought
that I’ve used him to show you some of
the pronunciation differences between
Australian English and American English
you don’t mind if I use you Alan either
way how long have you been in Australia
Alan two weeks so two weeks do you think
of it so far
beautiful yeah actually this is our
first rainy day but for most days is a
really nice time here on one side mm-hmm
rainy days are good for filming actually
hey what’s one weird thing that
Australians say Australians say a lot of
weird things with slang words what kinds
of things could be heard that have kind
of just weirded you out we do go to the
boots and I grab some flips chips and
we’ll crack at any in your life and no
idea what you’re talking about
nobody knows what you’re talking what he
actually said what can you go to the car
the back of the car open it get out a
can of beer and open the beer drinkers
and drink the beers
great is actually not that weird that
you know yes all the trunk a truck the
back of the car in America is called a
transfer but here in Australia and in
the UK – is boot yes you also saw some
really weird things actually this
morning you said to me I’m going to go
and pet that horse yeah there and I
could pet is just like an animal in
Australia I’m a dog or a cat right right
but you’re using as a bird like you
would do your poetry hey pat pat that
animal you say pet yeah yeah parody pet
en yes
but my point is that even native English
speakers have you know sometimes we have
words or even pronunciation that we
don’t quite understand about each other
and you have to sort of piece the puzzle
together and that’s definitely what
we’ve been doing the last few days right
since I met you definitely sing it
together yeah right this is together
figuring about I’m going to I’ve got
some words actually written down here
that I want to I want to test your
pronunciation on because I think that
the way that you say these words is
quite different to the way that we say
them here in Australia so I want to test
that out and I want to demonstrate to
you guys what that actually what it
looks like or what it sounds like the
different difference between the
American accent and the Australian
accent so the first one is this one Alan
how do you say this that’s hot
hi pop hi okay so we would say hot so
more like on rather than ah yeah it’s a
little bit different that’s an easy one
to start with um what about this one
only very different we say car this one
car car car so the main difference there
is that Alan pronounces that are at the
end of this word you say car we use
there are yes and we just dropped that I
found it’s kind of silent it just ah ah
yeah that’s like that’s proper scallion
accent perfect car all right what about
this one bottle bottle bottle now the
way that I say bottle is with you yeah
but it’s not actually lots of
Australians have the same pronunciation
of these two T’s like like you do and
often I say bottle as well for you
instead of pronouncing that P it’s like
a this sound like a lazy B sound model
bottle yeah bottle bottle yeah that’s
pretty good pretty close but that’s one
similarity between the Australian axe
and the American accent is this TT or
even just a single T in the middle of
words like a bottle of water a bottle of
water yeah like someone from the UK
would say a bottle of water in a better
answer than me
perfect okay how about this one burger I
think the way he says this is hilarious
we say burger but you pronounce this you
in a different way burger yes fur burger
or Gerber and I just say Doug okay
sometimes we dropped a there we’ll take
garage garage I like that word garage
really really soft yeah sometimes it’s
garage or sometimes it’s just garage so
the main difference between the American
and the Australian or the UK British
accent pronunciation of this word is
that we would put the stress on the
first syllable
and we would say gasps raj garage and
you would say garage so the stress
pattern is different for this word
garage garage okay but oh that is not
how you say that but yes book pretty
similar but but yeah it’s pretty similar
but um what about this one man daughter
daughter daughter
jul 2 or daughter that’s another good
example of that P daughter mm-hmm how
about this one
and or uh but it’s mostly I think you
hear people say aunt floor and what if
we say aunt my aunt teeth you say auntie
no we just say aunt we don’t really use
Nancy as much okay so that’s quite
different and and um how about this one
entreprenuer okay so the main difference
there is in this last couple of
syllables with a entrepreneur oh really
that’s the nerve yeah now I didn’t know
how to say it is entrepreneur so you
kind of food through at two syllables at
the NPA okay net entrepreneur or
entrepreneur inure nor nor artisan or
entrepreneur reverse entrepreneur what
about this is kind of related this word
yeah miss or niche this what do you say
I say niche but maybe I’ve been saying
apocryphal but if I think people say
niche the term that everyone has lots of
people in America say niche but everyone
outside of America said to me Sh mmm-hmm
you that’s true you just added a salsa
make sure I’m not the only one here not
it’s not just you like I’m American say
niche and add a piece and in there um
but the rest of the world the rest of
the english-speaking world says niche
find your nutrition all right okay
Carmel sorry what
Carmel will say caramel caramel apple
caramel caramel apples yeah ah come on
yes that’s very different talent and I
don’t know why it’s caramel what’s
caramel or people will say it both ways
it’s caramel or caramel yeah and I like
the caramel if you say caramel you put
like a stronger stress on this third
syllable don’t you caramel yeah moldable
caramel okay oh this one mobile mmm
Mobile mobile mobile you look very
different it’s quite different this is
likely it correctly you would normal you
would normally say just cell phone right
yeah we say when
you use this was like a mobile home like
to move things yeah not like a phone
right I write because we would we would
use this person even well actually I
jumped in the ocean with my mobile thank
you and I want to look for cell phones
and it’s like in Australia it’s not
really they just always use mobile
phones so I was searching for most about
cell phone plan is that’s not how they
say well like you was good yeah yeah
yeah but if you said that to someone
here they’re they know Excel yeah
there’s nothing about what’s outside
mobile phone right but if you did say
model or what you say moguls mobile
mobile they’d be like that actually
that’s like the petrol company yeah we
don’t use petrol either we call it gas
it’s just gas forget it it’s a visa like
loads of vocabulary differences between
American and Australian English we’re
trying to focus on pronunciation but
there’s a whole nother lesson in
vocabulary for sure and okay what about
this one this one is one of my favorites
very simply servant aluminium aluminium
is what we say but actually when I when
I looked this up you guys spell it
differently because I’m looking at it
I’m like I don’t think that’s how we
know it right you actually have changed
the spelling so instead of aluminium
with aluminium you you just ride it
aluminium aluminium yeah yeah
aluminum doesn’t um at the end scum look
in that planning buddy okay how about
this
leisure leisure leisure leisure but I
can see why Lygia that with me probably
makes more sense but American
pronunciation leisure with the AR and
Australian pronunciation leisure bit
lazier
it turmeric to Mike Victor Berg uh here
chattering yeah yeah this is yeah but I
think I’d call the turmeric for all that
I can remember good got yourself that’s
just totally happy turned out to bow
myself it’s got yourself and everything
you know how it is
um but this is the spice the yellow
spice it’s used a lot in from being
cooking and Malaysian cooking very very
tasty delicious
so are you kind of surprised by how many
differences there are or did you already
know about a lot of those differences
between American and Australian English
I think I’m get surprised by something
almost every day
that’s thank you yeah still very new
four years in it yeah this the way it’s
an it is pronunciation this is very
different yet yeah yeah but it’s fun
yeah define the Australian accent easy
to understand or is it sometimes quite
difficult
um I think for the most part you can
understand it there’s just there’s that
I think the more harder things in
Australia is like using different words
for different meanings different
vocabulary time words and stuff like
that yes definitely
alright well if you would like to watch
any more videos about the difference
between American English Australian
English British English I want you to go

just write on top of Alan right now
