hi guys welcome back to english with me
things i’ve got a really special video
today in the month of june just after my
birthday i decided that i wanted to see
how much brazilian portuguese i could
learn in one working week i wanted to
learn it in a way that would fit
naturally into my daily working life so
I contacted babbles and asked them if
they wanted to get on board with my
little challenge and they agreed so
together we all decided together and I
documented it over the week I’ll show
you how far I go
[Music]
hi guys it’s my birthday how exciting
and I woke up to an amazing allergic
reaction this pirate campers haratz has
come into bloom today we’re going to go
on a walk a walk dog a dog walk
ready so the weekend before the
challenge was my birthday and I just
took the opportunity to tell and
celebrate with family and my boyfriend
kicked me another meal it was wonderful
so what’s the beautiful day look at my
cute little family only arrangement only
it’s really nice weather we build up and
then it rains then Felipe’s one so I had
my birthday breakfast
lastly present and we’ve got some lovely
presents and now we’re going to go to
lunch to my favorite Italian restaurants
could Fratelli
stimulate flee my lover my brother
drowned appearances
[Music]
[Music]
my flake target the charity
Marseille with chipper recovers yes
listen to the whole other the day has
arrived
I’m going to be attempting to learn
Brazilian Portuguese in five days by the
way excuse the mess this is you my house
and yeah I’m going to be attempting to
learn Brazilian Portuguese in five days
I know
nearly nothing and I know how to say
hola
obrigada desculpa el fallo purple-ish
that’s all really I went to Portugal
quite a lot when I was a child because
we had an apartment there and but now
I’ve never I’ve never studied Portuguese
so I’ve just been given the access code
and I’m going to start learning all you
can do speech recognition or you can
also do it without speech recognition
all with speed records recognition I
want to try that out okay yeah you can
use my microphone hello good it works
sorry oi toodle-dee-doo do then it will
see it will see it will say come so
I got it all right boy told them it was
say so
and so it began that that was my first
attempt at Portuguese and I felt so
excited when I got my first words right
I know the pronunciation was a bit iffy
but I focus on that a little bit later
so I started incorporating using babble
in my daily life
so when I was on the train to meetings
or I had little breaks instead of
reading the news or playing games that’s
what I would do it turned out to be so
easy to do on a daily basis and in
public as well and you can turn off the
speech recognition when you’re on public
transport so you can just be listening
to what they’re saying and yeah I
started to really enjoy myself I’ve been
there editing not you know how English
releases hi everyone and welcome back to
english confusing
I’ve been studying really hard it’s been
really really challenging and I’m now on
my way into Camden Town to go to made in
Brasil which is a Brazilian restaurant
and then I’m going to try and talk with
some of the people that work there I’m
really really really good it’s really
good I am it’s an uncomfortable
situation for me as you know speaking in
a language that you don’t know very well
with native speakers of that language is
them is tough I want to put myself in a
situation to kind of understand how you
guys feel when you have to be English
with native speakers and also I love a
challenge it’s a massive challenge I
mean I’ve only been studying for a
couple of days this is like the midpoint
in my Portuguese journey what I’m hoping
to get out of today is certainly
practice a little bit of what I’ve
learned I also want them to correct me
with my main errors and I want to listen
to their pronunciation
really like to find out some of the
differences between Brazilian Portuguese
Portuguese from Portugal also I want to
have fun that’s what I’m doing today I’m
in the car on the way there now and I’ll
see you hopefully speaking what do you
[Music]
okay
I’m not made in Brazil in Camden in
London useful filming in public yet
going to go in I’m going to meet the
waiters have a little chat okay I’m
going to go to the wake up there’s a lot
to go through right six isn’t it
I tuned in doubles up also
why isn’t it a miracle but a bigger
agreement
please don’t go
that wasn’t too bad do I dare ask a
question okay well the pencil
in fact before his receive results
it was those performance Ishod Wair
we’re way way way I could barely ask a
question how an earth was i
understanding gavrio when he was
explaining the difference between
Brazilian education well what he said
I’m sure it’s because I already speak
Spanish and learning Italian I’m used to
those Latin languages but I honestly
could understand an 18th century saying
the problem was
[Music]
yes
[Music]
okay oh my god that’s good so I’m
drinking my son one so cool so go right
I’m drinking my super do medical job I
think and I have just had my first
conversation with a real-life Brazilian
person in for cheating and it was really
scary I understand how you guys feel now
when you speak to natives and it makes
you feel anxious and silly but you’ve
just got to remember that they know that
you’re learning and and it’s absolutely
fine without some really interesting
things about the pronunciation
differences between Brazilian Portuguese
and Portuguese from from Portugal
which is interesting because when I was
a child I always went on holiday to
Portugal with my family and and I found
Portuguese very difficult to understand
but I do think that I’m finding
Brazilian Portuguese to be slightly
easier to understand which is an
interesting observation so let’s
continue on with the day so inside made
in Brazil i sat down with Sarah who
works for babble and she showed me how
the app can help you with your
pronunciation and it was such a
confidence boost I was really really
struggling with it and I didn’t realize
how much I was getting wrong
it was awesome okay so I have sat down
with sana from bubble and we’re going to
talk about nasal sounds because when I
was studying before using the app I saw
at lesson on nasal sounds I clicked on
it that is really really difficult
yes profilers with it’s completely new
for me we absolutely don’t have that
sound in English and it made me think of
my students learning English we have so
many vowel sounds that they don’t have
and they find it really really hard for
Spanish speakers for example they have I
found and we have like 19 so I am I’d
like you to ask me on my native town all
right all right so you guys are probably
going to have a lovely laugh at me doing
this so the first course is animal
eatable
it must it’s like the feminine for
sister experiment earmark however very
given by Iman or emo emo in the
masculine turn over animal in my ear mom
Irma’s emo
I feel really silly yeah no no I know it
boom I got bread Paul boom boom oh that
was very good not you guys yeah oh good
neighbor cuz we’re comin up it has okay
palm palm palm you want to drain out of
it I want to say I want bread okay okay
mpro okay
poom poom poom info although everything
PO um no ma’am
yes ma’am good now hey what do you do if
you have a cold
ah so what Holly you sound a bit over I
have but people understand you’re ready
for one more this one furnace often get
quite wrong okay
the M at the end of the world so I would
say been to do been to do then or you
moving look the yeah it’s all right look
okay okay Iain Bing to the bank o7 we to
the home where long every other this one
also well it’s quite easy work okay on
it and how would you say it except death
being in just a year
Ong Ong Ong Ong audio money arrow I’m
here very just very good other
interesting so I’m really going to work
on my pronunciation then I’ve learned a
lot in the 30 minutes it’s amazing how a
little time you need yes to make such a
big difference because I would have been
paying them to delay
you something now no double bang sort of
thing very good very good very yes this
is what you need isn’t it the ego boost
now I want to go and chat with Gabrielle
Gabrielle okay very nice very girl and
after all that pronunciation I had built
up quite an appetite so Sara treated me
to a Brazilian lunch it was incredible
oh that’s good
also here we have the canyon Agana right
to the hole a horse evolved and another
pair oh and then stroganoff in English
everything so got a big enough piece for
our analysis
[Music]
yeah bananas over that but another pair
oh good morning it’s not earlier than
I’d like to admit I’m in the office
and when I say office I mean I’m in a
barn practicing Portuguese in public it
was really scary
finding babble to be really useful
because I found their course directory
and you can pick and choose exactly what
you want to practice so like we spoke
about the pronunciation yesterday
there’s one of those friends idioms and
you can go through the grammar you want
and I think that’s a really good way of
learning just kind of being aware of
where you’re lacking so yesterday I
picked up on a few of my errors and then
just topically picking and choosing how
to fix them so that’s what I’m going to
be working on today and so on I
continued with my quest to improve my
portuguese and i started looking at
grammar as well which is something that
I hadn’t really focused on before and I
realized that grammar is a massive topic
it’s too far it’s too big far too big to
focus on in just one week so I just
touched on learning the present forms of
verbs and also looking at the irregular
as well I’ll look at more complicated
things going forward BOM dia I’m in the
barn again and I just wanted to say was
finished I had finished the challenge
that I set for myself with babbles it
was awesome and I would do it again in a
heartbeat
so the quiz a big question how much of a
language can you learn in one week and
really it varies for everyone I would
not be able to learn an entire language
in a week I don’t think many people
would be able to I don’t have the time I
don’t have the right brain for that what
happened is that you can sit language
learning into every free little space in
your life for me the best time was when
I was on public transport because I have
to travel a lot with work
and three times chilling on my sofa
first thing in the morning lasting at
night times where my brain was more
relaxed and because the app is so easy
to use and it’s so pretty it doesn’t
really feel like you’re studying too
much it feels you know sort of like
you’re playing a game and it’s quite
addictive really I know if I was to sit
down and cram and study lots and lots
and lots hours and hours and hours every
single day for a whole week the next
week I would forget nearly everything
because that’s how I studied for my
university exams and I don’t remember
much from them so my favorite part of
the week was definitely when I had the
chat with Gabrielle and I didn’t
actually enjoy it in the moment I felt
really really uncomfortable and awkward
I felt really awkward but afterwards
when I realized I are someone a question
they understood me they answered the
question and I understood their answer
that was an amazing feeling because it
was sort of my first experience of
proper communication in that language
and it just goes to show that nothing
can beat human interaction but
unfortunately you can’t have human
interaction all at the time so an
absolute Babel is a really good
alternative the most useful part of my
experience was definitely sitting down
with Sara in made in Brazil and looking
at the pronunciation because I had no
idea that apps could offer so much
pronunciation advice and pronunciation
help and also I didn’t realize how much
I was lacking in the pronunciation
department I spend my life telling
people pronunciation is easy all you
have to do is make this sound when
actually I came across loads of new
sounds I had no idea how to make it’s
really hard it’s really embarrassing and
so it was really really good to sit down
and just practice them so I really drew
my attention to where I was lacking and
like I always say try and self-diagnose
find out where you’re lacking and then
study exactly that and that’s the beauty
of Babel you can look through all the
courses and pick and choose what you
need to
another thing I really like about the
app is they’ve got sections for vacation
phrases everyday life phrases things
like that are really really useful going
ahead I will 100% there’s also my heart
carry on using babble I think it’s
fantastic
I think I’ll also complement it with
some sort of language exchange or maybe
even a private teacher I would like some
lessons so that I can get feedback on my
speaking my conversation I just want to
encourage you all to if you’re already
studying a language keep going keep
doing it find new ways to incorporate
that language into your everyday life an
app can be a really good way of doing
that and if you’ve not studied a
language before try one pick one you
like and try it if you’re interested in
Babel all the information is in the
description box don’t forget to connect
with me on all of my social media I’ve
got my facebook my Instagram and my
Twitter and I will see you soon for
another lesson
