I’m Joe Sampson from black sheep and the
executive creative director and we work
a lot with Jamie Oliver on a lot of his
restaurant projects designing for James
Italian and 15 down old Street the chair
project for us is quite close to our
heart because we specified the fritz
hansen chairs for 15 for the
refurbishment the answer is just a
design classic it’s just did the test of
time and it’s just so simple it’s
functional it’s hard wearing its
commercial it will be around you’ll be
around forever one of our clients is at
Waterford crystal and what fascinates me
is a manipulation of crystal and
something that’s such an old craft into
something that’s so modern and so just
being able to take such a design icon of
a chair and pimp it in our own way was a
really exciting of opportunity so the
obvious thing because the legs are so
spindly being such an old classic we
decided that we would dress the legs in
crystal as crystal is wonderful you know
you can do so many things with it but
very difficult to work with because it’s
crystal and it’s very delicate in the
subway but very strong in other ways but
there are so many opportunities to make
abuse look good for things it’s almost
like turning lead into gold now the old
alchemists where you start with all
these raw ingredients at the end of the
factory comes through various stages the
blowing and the carting of the polishing
and then you end up with the scoop he
used
just magnificent cut crystal piece so
the best bit about the chair as well it
isn’t it which is what crystal is all
about Cody crystals all about creating
light we wanted to do something that was
quite a sophisticated to take on a
pineapple and artichoke and an onion and
we have the cuts which kind of represent
those three food elements this date is
going to be adorned in flowers and the
flowers are made from Waterford napkins
which are all going to be stitched on
all over the chair which basically
creates them a nice contrast between the
Morse of hardness of the crystal too
much more kind of delicate a feminine
sort of seat pad I think this chair is
total unique one-of-a-kind chair it’s a
handcrafted and bespoke and I don’t
think there’s anything else anything
else like it out there
