Interview with Jamie Oliver, part 1 – Jamie’s Great Britain

14 years of making cooking shows and
sort of celebrating everyone else’s
countries I thought it was probably
about time to do Britain interestingly
you know in the last fourteen years
there’s been a massive evolution of food
in Britain I mean there’s always been a
rich diversity of food and food culture
but I think what was important about the
last fourteen years is the young ones
have been really running with kind of
modernizing and making food beers wines
cheeses their own you know so it’s good
timing also the Olympics around the
corner you know it just kind of feels
like the right time
great British cooking is really diverse
it’s exciting it can be light and
delicate and it can be sort of like a
big beautiful friendly hug so I think
you know for me this is a celebration
actually this is Jamie’s Great Britain
but actually it’s it’s kind of a
celebration of global cooking around the
world
you know what I’ve tried doing this
series is get people comfortable you
know and say things like you know fish
and chips yeah
British I go no it was not British it
came with the Jewish communities and if
it wasn’t for them we’d never have it
you know and just just stuff and I love
doing that and we’re doing that and
every single program we’re trying to
give people things that they’re really
close and comfortable with but saying
it’s not ours don’t call it out because
it ain’t ours but what we should be
proud of is the fact that we were clever
enough to love it and embrace it and
call it our own you can’t really
understand food in a culture unless you
understand the culture so my shows are
always about people they’re always about
places but ultimately we get down to the
nitty-gritty and that’s cooking serious
cooking you know what with me it’s
always a little bit deeper than just
cooking a few things you know it’s about
people it’s about people’s dreams about
the way that families can travel and and
some people’s stories about getting to
this country 100 years ago 50 years ago
20 years ago now I just find it
fascinating what I’m trying to do in
this series is just show people the
diverse range of beautiful food
happening on this little island and
really celebrating not just what we
think is British food but also the many
many countries from all around the world
which now called Britain their home to
celebrate British food is to celebrate
so many other cultures and cuisines and
I just want to get people excited about
it
