I mean Kelly had her moment earlier I’m
having my moment now that was just
beautiful
so Jordan at least tell us your role
tell us what’s going on how did that
happen I’m actually the artistic
assistant for a Richmond ballets minds
in motion program it is the outreach
program of Richmond Ballet and those
amazingly awesome performers are known
as Team double-xl they are a group of
fifth through eighth graders that all
went through the minds of motion program
in the Charlottesville City Public
Schools during their fourth grade year
and now have become the ambassadors of
our program I agree I also am one of the
lucky teaching artists that gets to work
with those dancers each week they come
together for one hour and a half
scholarship dance class and we get to
have a blast dancing and doing things
like that and just learning about the
dedication and what it takes to be a
dancer and the discipline and
performance qualities so yeah it’s their
great group of dancers super talented as
you just saw totally professional
amazing
when you and I talked before we you told
me about some of the intersections
between the curriculum and some of the
lessons that they’re learning that they
can take in to life what so the larger
minds and motion program the schools
that have us in we work with the fourth
graders minds emotion is a part of their
school curriculum meaning that every
fourth grader participates they get one
45-minute dance class with a live
musician and they work learning about
how to count music listening and moving
to music we play games we work together
we all make mistakes and we learn from
them and we cheer each other on and
within that 45 minutes once a week not
only are they getting you know that
learning about what it is to be a dancer
in the discipline that it takes but
they’re also learning how to work as a
team and they learn to lift each other
up in the sense of cheering each other
on and encouraging and they’re working
towards a big final professional
performance at the end of the year we’re
all six of the Charlottesville City
Schools comes together and they put on
this performance so within their class
experience with minds and motion they’re
they’re getting critical thinking skills
and problem-solving skills and we tie
math into it and English and so we
really try to work in that fourth grade
curriculum so we with the dance and the
music and movement are supporting what
they’re already getting in the classroom
and at the end of the year we put on
this big show and I shouldn’t even say
we because the professional show is
literally the fourth graders plus our
team double-xl
doing a professional show all on their
own well I get to enjoy being in the
audience crying my eyes out at their
extreme talent and dedication and hard
work so it really is I feel blessed to
have the opportunity to work with fourth
graders to bring art and dance and music
to those that wouldn’t necessarily get
to have that experience and in the
fourth grade classroom and on stage
get to see the pure joy the confidence
all of those amazing things that just
make me feel very lucky that I have been
a part of such an amazing process so you
all have been in existence for how long
now
this is our 23rd year for minds and
motions so minds emotion is also in
Richmond City and surrounding counties
here in Charlottesville this is actually
our 12th year in Charlottesville City
Public Schools so is there any other
thing that you’d want the audience to
know that I didn’t think to ask no I do
just want to say thank you to live arts
who is our community partner this year
and has allowed us to rehearse with
these dancers every week at their space
so we’re really greatly appreciative of
them and just how much I love that we
were a part of this the kids have been
so excited about coming out and
performing for you guys and I’m just I’m
thrilled that they had this opportunity
so thank you for having us
you
