my topic will be about what humans know
only 0.01% out of 100 our company and
our team we do business in agriculture
we do research in microbiology and we
are investigating microorganisms and I
have a question for you do you know how
many percent of your body
there are bacterias try to imagine well
ten percent of all the bodies are a
bacteria so another question do you know
how many percent are good microbes and
how many bad ones out of 100 percent
well the answer is 95% of all micro
organisms are good ones but we remember
about them when we have some problems
but the reality is like this even this
picture is from our lab where specific
microbes are fighting with each other
and greed one is winning that fight in
2015 United Nations made this year
International Year of soil because we
have to think about the future about our
land and what we will leave for our
children well even these big components
are thinking about the farming and as
you see there is only a small piece of
all Earth’s what we have for farming and
somehow we have to feed them and it
takes for nature 1,000 years to build
from 2.5 to 5 centimeters of topsoil and
with intensive farming and what we don’t
care about the land it takes 30 years to
destroy it what I mean intensive farming
farmers are using fertilizers like macro
micro elements nitrogen phosphorus
potassium
which is needed for acceleration of the
growth of the plant as well crop
protection chemicals to avoid plants
from unwanted other plants weeds insects
diseases so we put everything in our
land and this how the global market
looks like and what is the situation now
on our for our ears so this is how our
land
looks like the greatest oil very
decorated soil and we have only that
piece with stable soil
according some studies there are 60
years left for the topsoil and by 2050
we’ll need to feed more than 9 billion
people with such small piece of land and
for one kilogram of meat we need six
kilogram of food grains so we will need
to produce more grains just to feed all
the human so what shall we do are we
going to do more intensive farming but
according the United Nations there are
several ways one is biodiversity it
means that we have to change where it is
we have to have rarity of grains
changing the plants even animal breeds
as well sustainable farming that we need
to think how we do our farming water
drain systems we have so much water
coming from the rain but we do not
collect it and use it for the farming
and of course restoring microflora so
all these organisms which are living in
soil our teams way is microbiology so we
do research in microbiology in
microorganism and I
like a little bit to describe what is
needed for the plant what kind of
elements nitrogen is needed for to have
more green leaves bigger acceleration of
photosynthesis then another important
element is phosphorus which is good to
have huge roots potassium which health
plan to be more stable healthy and to
produce more blossoms and fruits but the
funny thing is that we have 1,200 tonnes
hanging in the air on one hectare of
soil but their plans cannot take it due
to specific composition of this nitrogen
phosphorus is produced from phosphoric
rock and it’s not renewable and we will
have it according different studies from
80 to 100 years then potassium is partly
on biology poly where several companies
and countries control that business so
what to do other ways microorganisms
again one more question do you know how
many organisms are in one spoon with the
soil try to calculate in your mind how
many quantities are in such spoon so at
that tiny spoon with the soil we have
more microorganisms that are living
people on the earth another question
please imagine how many organs are
invisible so we cannot see with their
eyes
sixty six percent of all living
organisms are invisible and the truth is
that science knows only 0.01% of all
available microbes and microorganisms in
the world so there is still a lot to do
for our scientist and to explore it play
do not get by themselves all these
elements that are specific bacterias
like nitrogen-fixing bacteria which can
fix about 50 kilograms of nitrogen from
the atmosphere in one hectare of soil
and and it could be available for the
plant another bacterial phosphorus so
localized in bacteria it can solubilize
50 kilograms of fixed phosphorus and
make it available again for one hectare
of soil potassium potassium bacteria can
mobilize potassium and make it again
available in the soil so we can do a lot
with microorganisms microflora
just we need to take care about them and
to give food as I’m here in Lithuania so
what is the situation in Lithuania in
agribusiness so we have no draughts we
have plenty of water
nice lakes nice rivers what we can use
this water for farming comparing with
other countries we have huge plots of
lands what a meal during the Soviet
Union and collectivization process which
was sad period for us it was made and
built big plots of lands and after
independence our farmers can use huge
equipment huge combines and do the
farming more efficiently comparing with
other Western Europe country we do
investments in agriculture we buy new
technologies new equipment like combines
tractors so we have everything we just
need to continue and think what we are
doing with our land and doing farming
more sustainable and the last one what
kind of land we would like to leave for
our future it’s a question for you to
think and thank you so much
