Lessons from a Life with Falcons | Simone Cilluffo | TEDxYouth@ISF

I let me reduce you to Chinese isn’t she
beautiful I’m very shy so she’s gonna do
the top for me Janice and I have been
together for seven months she’s an Aries
Hawk and she’s very very smart we start
to having good relationship even
sometimes she plays little trick she
thinks I’m going to steal the food from
her
my relationship with Raptors began nine
years ago when I left Italy at the age
of 21 I chooses my destination the
forest and the most beautiful place I
could go New Zealand even not far enough
to keep my parents from following me it
was there that I discovered the element
that I prefer here I start flying in a
paraglider at the beginning I was afraid
but Donna my instructor taught me how to
overcome my fear like any good teacher
he understood my nation and he helped me
to push my own limit giving me trust and
freedom to experiment my animal teacher
did the rest they show me the way
aiya Bob they were circling in the warm
rising air without moving their wing I
knew that if I would follow them I could
be in the thermal and so I could start
to climb at very high altitude above the
earth I decided to embark on a trip I
want to cross the country I want to see
New Zealand by foot and by wing I start
from Queenstown and I finish in Auckland
I hide them through for forty days I
climb to the top of the mountain and I
spend the night there on top of the
world I travel with no luxuries I have
only one pair of pants one t-shirt two
pairs of underwear my glider and my
jacket of course my diet consists in
cracker and chocolate
and tuna my bird it’s better rabbit duck
pheasant and pigeon I wash myself only
once a week despite my smell
Kiwis New Zealand people they were so
kind and offer me refuge from time to
time most of the flight my birds were
there those birds were hawk eagle falcon
and kite they weren’t afraid of me
sometimes even dangerous I remember an
episode in India when a bird to fly pass
through my wing and I could have deploy
my reserve chute but initially I wasn’t
there for fun I was there for health
issues I got an operation and
traditional medicine didn’t work on me I
knew if I want to heal I need to be in
the forest so I start to search and I
found an Ayurvedic clinic deep in the
Indian forest the doctor there forced me
to find peace he seems a nice he comes
but for a westerlyn slowing down was
very complicated no physical activity
internet phone or other distraction were
allowed to me my days were filled with
nothing I fully trust the doctor and in
nature and by observing wildlife I gain
knowledge be still do nothing it will
isn’t that that animal – when they
aren’t well isolate themselves and rest
and do what all is necessary I start
observing anymore and I was amazed to
see the amount of time they were
spending doing nothing and Raptors are
the same
they spend most of the morning preening
their feathers and taking the Sun then
was the time for me to go back home and
I discovered that my dad was sick with
cancer
those moment in life are never easy
animal accept this as a part of life so
I try to learn from them if my dad would
have died I couldn’t accept it better I
have plenty of time off and I could
start to finally to dedicate it to this
wonderful art the art of falconry
falconry has its roots in hunting it is
the art of catching wild quarry with a
trained Raptor
it attempts to reproduce a natural
episode where predation can also
it is the law of equity bro sometimes
the Falcon win sometimes it doesn’t
aware we human being we love always to
win since I became a falconer I start to
have a closer look in nature and I
realize that nowadays there are no more
equilibrium and so we found Siegel in
cities pigeon everywhere with the
colossi dropping the ring elf and
monumental art crows and Magpies over
populated urban area and we’re before
we’re lake now there are dump and we
found the crown crane another beautiful
animal resting during the migration a
falconer try to restore this imbalance
and this is what we call birth control
on pest control my burden I chase away
seagull that that descended in the
ecological platform to eat the garbage
the human society produce but this is
not a big problem when we finish we
cover it with grass and make a beautiful
golf course on top meanwhile crows die
choking a piece of soap and seagull
suffocate on plastic through working
with animal we hope to find solution in
my case Raptors Falcon and Hawk losing
contact and respect for nature we are
losing part of ourself of our instinct
the capacity to be normally with the
planet that sustain us we should have a
little bit of nature in our daily life
and don’t lose the skill to watch and
run from it thank you
