The Pathway to Intended Violence in Mass Shooters | Clare Allely | TEDxWarwickSalon

so my talk this afternoon is going to be

about the psychological analysis of the

pathway to violence and mass shooters

it’s definitely focusing today or in the

case of Anders Breivik and Adam Lanza

their inherent challenges to identifying

individuals her high-risk have engaged

the extreme violence such as mass

shooting one of the main challenges to

identify these individuals is that the

behavior that we’re trying to protect is

extremely rare because of the event

rates so low conventional research

techniques or methods are completely

useless here many academics have

explored and investigated the myths and

misconceptions surrounding serial

homicide behavior for instance it’s an

erroneous assumption to make that person

who’s intending engaging in mass

violence will avoid publicizing their

intentions or lane pair to their attack

many mass shooters will actually

actively post things in the forms of

pictures but he wasn’t X or lane prior

to their attacks for instance the case

of Elliot Rogers who posted up his D

retribution video prior to killing six

people and injuring 14 others near the

campus of University California Santa

Barbara and 2014 also Paris attack alert

Reuters sent his through an email has

friends family therapists and teachers a

107,000 word manifesto that itself

entitled my twisted world we must

further our understanding of the

psychological traits and triggers that

lead to these really extreme violent

behaviors if we are to identify and

prevent it psychiatrist maker Fitzgerald

argued that school shootings and mass

shootings are not uncommon Lee carried

out by people with neurodevelopmental

disorders such as Asperger’s syndrome

with often a very good deal of warning

on Lane in the form of pictures and text

Meiko Fitzgerald argued in positives

that our new diagnosis be created that

he called criminal autistic psychopathy

which the sub casa gave people with

Asperger’s syndrome

he felt this diagnosis would help

deferentially a small subgroup of

individuals with autism who engage in

these extremely violent behaviors thus

separating them from the general

population of individuals with autism

who are normally Utley to engage in

violent behavior than the general

population and in fact some would even

suggest that actually been less likely

to commit violent behaviors for the

general population there’s also been

other researchers that are positive the

link between autism spectrum disorders

but y’all know referred to as autism for

the remainder of the presentation I’m

Cyril home aside behavior given these

really interesting findings that’s

really led myself to investigate less in

more detail looking at the way of

psychosocial stressors and

neurodevelopmental disorders and mash it

was the serial killers from an unbiased

sample of 75 masters we found that eight

percent of this group had a diagnosis of

autism or their family or friends

strongly advocated that we definitely

had this diagnosis although this is

eight times arre of that phone’s natural

population the famous not suggest that

individuals with autism or more

little–it’s by masseter in fact there’s

many things that are exacerbated and

people’s autism for instance they may

have issues and reliefs and problems in

a way so that it’s actually exacerbated

and naturally find it much more

difficult to call common mobile

commodities are also existent in

people’s autism Francis mid disorders

such as anxiety and depression are very

common and behavior disorders such as

attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

or ADHD these findings will increase

prevalence of autism within this

extremely violent group of mass shooters

was consistent with a narrow study where

we also find the same higher prevalence

and master’s and serial killers however

it’s very important to point out here

that every single one of those

individuals with autism that engaged in

this extreme violent behavior all had

experienced psychosocial stressors such

as victimization and skill-building

so what can we really see then a

pedigree of a fainting and general and

that’s particularly for individuals what

does it be search tailors I think when

the clinic key landmark studies with had

in this area in the study that was

published by Hepler and colleagues in

2010 they looked at the real nature of

claims and 177 individuals with

Asperger’s syndrome and they found that

the array of creams was no different to

that of the general population in case

records spanning 22 years they found

that there were 33 convictions almost

artistry convictions there are three

cases of bodily injury one case of

robbery and one case of violence

threatening behavior and the researchers

argued that this was no different to the

general population individuals with

autism are no more likely to be violent

compared to the general population

however in saying that there is a small

subgroup of individuals with autism who

when they do engage in violent crime it

tends to be very extreme on the 14th

December 2012 20 year old Adam Lanza

killed 26 people 20 of which were young

children and the Sandy Hook elementary

school in Newtown Connecticut other

monster was quite a couple of times

throughout his childhood adolescence

diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome and

obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD I

report detailing the warning signs in

red flags exhibited by Lanzer prior to

his attack was published a couple of

years after his attack in 2012 the

report argued the in Lance’s case his

severe and worsening internalized mental

health disorders combined with an

atypical preoccupation with mass

violence and access to weapons were the

key factors works contributed his

the report also revealed the in fifth

grade

Adam Lanza produced an extremely

disturbing project but she’d called the

big book of granny the content of this

bit was considered of obsessed

of both in length Anton pictures intense

violence containing images and

narratives depicting child murder

cannibalism and taxidermy the people

that created the poor said that most

children would even know how to invade

new material within this report he

created the mental health professionals

that contributed to the report also said

that had the report being subject to

really careful review by school staff it

would have really highlights the need

for Adam Lanza to seek child psychiatric

evaluations however the report does also

argue that teachers may not have the

necessary training or expertise that

will help them identify individuals hurt

risk or who are demonstrating a red

flags or understand going to seek

further assessments particularly for

individuals who are progressing well

academically for her struggling socially

in having social deficits another report

revealed that Adam Lanza had also

compelled a spreadsheet on mass suitors

that occurred over the years

specifically it was a four by seven foot

spreadsheet with detail on over 500

masters laying all minor details

including the weapons used the body

counts and location of the attack such

was the level detail the report is

considered to have taken absolutely

years to compile and was casera to be

used as a score sheet by other mincer as

well one anonymous law enforcement

veteran status and a quote it was like a

doctoral thesis that was the quality of

the research there was also another

other warning signs that other minds

exhibited that I think when they can key

things here was his use of garbage bags

in order to block her natural dealy in

this bedroom in computer room you can

see here from the picture this is a

picture from his bedroom however there

is no one single factor which triggered

Adam Lanza’s attack instead there was a

number of codes with the factors that

resulted in his planned and

well-executed attack for instance has

increased in isolation his loss of

school has increased isolation

for his own family living in the same

roof has symptoms of OCD

obsessive-compulsive disorder anxiety

and depression also worsened in esteem

and it was also considered that is

profound and potential worsening

anorexia nervosa was also not sure here

in fact her other mindless obsession

with masters also increased and pure and

it became very preoccupied during this

time and a forensic review that reveal

there’s preoccupation with masters have

increased dramatically and was extremely

intense and did other Minds I was really

fascinated but Norwegian masseter Anders

Breivik

I was failing to have researched him

extensively other ones who also used

many techniques employed by Anders

Breivik as well and replicated them for

instance the use of first-person shooter

games for training purposes and hated

how to as marksman traineeship Adam

whines on the last couple ones parrot

attack also became really actively

engaged in a small online community of

people who shared his dark obsession

with masters the FBI Behavioral Analysis

Unit also found in determined that after

extensive forensic review of Adam

Lanza’s computer usage that his level of

attention is attention to detail and as

assess of nature with masters was quite

literally cool unprecedented on the 22nd

of July 2011 anders breivik norwegian

masseter got bombed government buildings

in Oslo and then proceeded to the island

of your toya where he killed 77

individuals for this he was sentenced to

present for 21 years but the question is

asked what is it that motivated Abbott

Anders Breivik here what why did he kill

honest manner it’s not it’s not as

simple to say that he was a terrorist

supporting an idealized religion or

simply this missingness man is being

insane he himself has claimed that his

actions were motivated to save you not

from radical Islam and it was actions

and as motivations were were all for the

goodness nor evil however after studying

detailed assessments of

fire rate terrorists I’m assessing as

well and as barracks orange rating in a

self-published manifesto we are found

that a condition known as narcissistic

decompensation may have been behind his

beliefs that he is waging a personal and

particle war up until the age of 27

years and this Brevik had experienced a

number of social social stressors and

life stressors for instance he had a

really difficult relationship a

relationship with his mother he’d

experienced rejection from political

elites and gaming elites as well in some

his life experiences up until that point

have culminated in numerous field

attempts to gain positions of power and

Status attention and adulation from

others a narcissistic decompensation can

occur when someone with a narcissistic

personality disorder experiences

significant crisis and major injuries to

their self-esteem occurs when there’s a

significant discrepancy between that

individuals grandiose fantasies and them

average or mediocre accomplishments

since the person does not get a

validation from reality

for instance attention adoration and

love that is so desperately desire

they’d experienced a decompensation

narcissistic decompensation can consist

of a depression marked by psychomotor

retardation disrupted sleep patterns a

becoming preservative and once speech or

ratings pursuing an addiction or

expressing an extreme sense of a page as

a result the person isolates themselves

due to the harsh reality that they’re

not of grandparents status and will turn

to themselves to fit their own

grandiosity by supplying their own sense

of attention in adoration in various

case is narcissistic decompensation we

argued the caliber in the age of 27

years lasting approximately two to three

years he read me writes his life history

to try and bring a sense of grandeur he

rewrites himself as being a high ranking

freemium

it’s also random at this time where it

becomes really affected on the idea that

there’s a conspiracy amongst Islamic

immigrants to take over Europe something

he himself called this honest

isomerization of a Europe one of Oslo’s

was prominent psychiatrists argued and

told the court of law during the case

the Anders Breivik was probably

suffering from Asperger’s syndrome

Tourette syndrome and narcissistic

personality disorder he’d also argued

that it could not be completely real day

the Anders Breivik was suffering from

possible paranoid psychosis there is the

support that the psychiatrist gave for

in particular Anders Breivik in

Asperger’s syndrome was his difficulties

with social signals the lack of emotion

and feeling the he portrayed when

discussing his victims during courts he

also was very monotonous in tone of

voice he was obsessed with rating

something less hypergraphia and was

assessed by numbers I had a really

really strong memory ability also I

think it’s quite interesting here I read

it at the age of four Anders Breivik

actually had psychiatric evaluation and

the psychiatrist as time also can

evergreed the analyst previck was

possibly suffering from Asperger’s

syndrome so these two conditions

narcissistic personality disorder and

Asperger’s or autism together may form a

particularly dangerous combination and

may actually increase the risk of

someone engaging in these extremely

violent behaviors such as mass shooting

somewhere two previous studies we have

found that there could be a link between

having narcissistic personality disorder

and engage in this really extreme

violent behavior however and Anders by

this case we think that narcissistic

decompensation may have occurred at the

time when he was relying with an

Asperger’s coping strategy so engage and

become really effective a certain thing

could have been the final thing that

pushed him onto the path towards entails

violence in our system has been found to

be a risk factor and masters and school

shooters I think one of the key study

in Assyria is one that looked at seven

German school shootings and these seven

offenders to preferring to display high

levels of narcissistic personality

traits when these turns vigils were

investigated further one way that was

actually considered to be actually have

fulfilled the requirements for our fill

diagnosis of narcissistic personality

disorder and interestingly the rate of

narcissistic personality disorder in a

general population is just under 1%

however this prevalence is much higher

in clinical samples and can be anything

between 2% and as much as 16% the fact

of a study found that one in seven of

these skill shooters had this diagnosis

really sure that the prevalence was

actually much closer to that found in

clinical samples from the general

population

so therefore narcissism may be one of

the rest factors and precipitating these

extremely violent attacks however

caution must be put in place here

narcissistic traits are not a necessary

condition for motivating and mass

shooting similarly having an autism

spectrum disorder and narcissistic

personality disorder combined well not

necessarily by themselves propelled

individuals up the path to violence is

really key to ploy here that other

factors are important and art play here

on these individuals a little is known

about the warning signs or early warning

signs and red flags and these

individuals the route itself has been

well defamed in the aftermath

essentially as you can see here the

pathway towards intense violence starts

with harbored grievances that can they

are developed and continue with the idea

friends in the case of Anders Breivik

that you’re saving Europe from radical

Islam the next stage Stage two is you

can see no pathway here as ideation at

the stage the potential would be

masseter starts to view violence has

been the only option available to them

it’s at this stage as well we’ll start

to identify with other assailants and

other masters that record and they’ll

also start expressing their thoughts to

others at the stage as well and very

obsessively as well this has been

followed by me

in planning and preparation followed by

beach security in the case of Anders

Breivik he used GPS the scope routes

were in the Toya island part of the

attack and in family assault company

it’s in the national final attack itself

stage six of the pathway to violence

model other authors and beast deficits

interact with psychopathology and their

clinical clinical presentation and what

was common and critical for mass

violence to occur was that these factors

coexisted are combined with this the

pathway to violence in this case the

stage is one of grievances basically

anyone who starts with grievances and

credits crystallizes these in ideation

and in Falls the subsequent steps of

preparation research and planning and

feature security will highly lately

engage in an extreme violent attack of

mass shooting however umbrellas case we

argue that it wasn’t as narcissistic

personality disorder Percy that led them

down the pathway to violence rather

there was an artistic decompensation and

its overlap with the first stage and a

pathway to violence grievances that

really motivated his attack the pathway

to violence and the factors that drive

someone to become a master requires

urgent detailed investigation mass

shooting episodes are really impulsive

and are typically well-planned and

executed over months and even years the

pathway to violence therefore really

opens up this a great opportunity for

the development of threat assessment

endless once or weeks or years even then

the potential would be masseter

behaviors fantasies and actions escalate

the raises an opportunity with which to

identify these individuals and put in

place preventive strategies in order to

try and avoid these atrocities from

occurring and the aftermath of a mass

shooting the question is always asked

could it have been prevented

psychological analysis is just one way

we can recognize and begin to start

understanding further the red flags and

warning signs and these individuals and

prevent these atrocities before they

even occur
