Millennial Destiny | Michael Klein | TEDxYeshivaUniversity

I was walking in Jerusalem down Ben
Yehuda Street with a couple of friends
and as usual there was a huge crowd of
protesters they were a group of 50 or so
middle-aged vegetarians passionately
demonstrating in front of a schnitzel
store against killing animals for food I
didn’t think much of yet another ben
yehuda protest but one of my friends was
clearly disturbed so he ran to Cafe
Ramone bought himself a piece of
schnitzel ran back to the protest got up
on a table and yelled if chickens can
eat people then people can eat chickens
and vegetables are people too he then
ate the piece of schnitzel as the entire
protest came to a halt and they all
tried to figure out one chickens I’ve
eaten people how vegetables can be human
beings and why this lunatic was standing
on a table yelling at them while eating
schnitzel I am here to talk about
millennial destiny not the merits of
being a carnivore vegetarian but this
strange encounter had a profound impact
on me I realized two life altering
messages first and foremost I need more
normal friends
but second Rema lanius
see things differently than previous
generations as we are exposed to and
have access to technology and tools that
they didn’t have my friend who may have
had one too many shots decided to use
this to connect the chickens and
vegetables but we Millennials can
utilize these tools to drive our own
destiny if we apply them constructively
but technological tools are a
double-edged sword helping us
immeasurably but if we are not careful
confusing and distracting us this is the
Millennial challenge so how do we
achieve so how do we harness these tools
to achieve our destiny in ways that our
parents and grandparents couldn’t
achieving our destiny begins for all of
us in college with deciding on a career
path we imagine that the way to making
career choices must employ all
electronic means possible as electronics
are necessary for every decision in our
lives having been raised in a world of
internet and social media we are used to
developing our thoughts through the use
of email to speak to people across the
globe instantly we connect with friends
through pictures on Instagram we get
personal and snapchat videos and we even
feel like we are truly with others with
virtual reality tools so naturally
making career choices must use all these
as well but a generation ago making
career decisions utilized none of these
that generation had an advantage on us
of focus and a lack of distraction that
comes from having too many tools in fact
an NYU study in 2011 proved that having
too many inputs can harm our
decision-making so in order for us to
achieve our destiny we need to harness
our generations millennial power to meld
both of these worlds together taking
advantage of our tools while avoiding
the disadvantages of their distractions
this world was a completely different
place my grandfather set out at the age
of 20 to find a career make a living he
grew up in Antwerp Belgium the diamond
capital of the world the people he grew
up with his friends family everyone
dealt in diamonds so he did what was
predestined for him what was accessible
to him and he apprenticed by a diamond
dealer the old-fashioned way
following his every move and soaking it
all in until he was ready to start on
his own as that was the only way for him
to make a living
deciding on his career path was easy
because he didn’t have the distraction
of all our tools but as a result he also
didn’t have our possibilities we are so
fortunate to have access to every single
job career path cause and passion at our
fingertips interested in learning
something all it takes is a quick google
search to learn about it want to explore
career paths use Google to find people
in the area and pick up the phone to
call or text them and learn about it
until you convinced it’s for you these
tools have created so much more than
Amazon Prime like conveniences they have
created an opportunity for us to live
our lives differently so how does this
work for all of us in the room my first
semester at Yeshiva University was one
of the most confusing and overwhelming
periods of my life I just decided to go
to college get an education and slowly
proceed down a path to discover my
destiny when suddenly I was bombarded on
all sides by everything that is out
there I knew I was oriented towards
finance but technology showed me there
are thousands of career paths open to a
finance major I lived through the
Millennial challenge of information
overload and risked suffering its
distractions and loss of focus I risked
being the schnitzel boy standing on a
table connecting to chickens and
vegetables what I learned I supported by
the studies
advantage of our tools to remain focused
and to channel our millennial advantages
into strengths rather than allow them to
distract us I put in the work and effort
making hundreds of phone calls and
reading everything I could through
Google Books and company websites but
eventually I figured it out
it seemed investment making was for me
after researching hundreds of career
paths speaking the tons of people in
various fields and being exposed to
different skills online I realized my
passion
I then maximized every modern technology
at my disposal to further develop my
interest in investment making I use
social media on LinkedIn to connect to
people in the field and learn about them
I would then email them to set up phone
calls so that I can get to know them
better and expand my network but before
speaking to them on the phone I would do
more research through Google and company
websites to learn about the different
positions within each field one
particular phone call with an alumnus of
yeshiva university Daniel helped direct
me to Morgan Stanley as my top choice of
firm and after interviewing there I was
fortunate enough to land my dream job
I used technology to find my role models
and set my goals and then I used
technology to help me get there my
grandfather in Antwerp didn’t have all
of our tools and as a result he didn’t
have our opportunities not
this is the strength of the millennial
era well it sounds like I am on a path
to discovering my destiny it’s important
to realize the way Millennials are still
at risk of getting sidetracked many of
my working friends are not happy in
their job or firm in an experience Inc
study it found that 43 percent of
Millennials are not in the job they
expected to be out of college 60 percent
of Millennials are looking to switch
jobs or career paths and 70 percent left
their jobs within two years of
graduating college because we have
access to so many different people and
paths we are constantly jumping from
place to place employers are more
frustrated than ever before due to the
difficulty of retaining talent the
beautiful gift of internet and social
media continues to be a problem as we
continue to have too many choices we are
constantly jumping from place to place
as the fear of missing out is too
enticing this tempts us to become the
jack of all trades and master of none as
we sample everything instead of focusing
and we know that having too many ongoing
choices is constraining not expanding in
a study by Stanford professor mark leper
he found that a store selling 24
different types of chocolates was
unsuccessful but when it limited
inventory to only six options it
succeeded tenfold my grandfather in
Antwerp had the easiest time picking his
career path because he only had one
choice we need to take advantage of the
power of choice without being distracted
by the noise of choice we need to
constantly remind ourselves to stay
focused and use our tools only for
improvement not for distraction and
confusion the path to our destiny cannot
be sidetracked there is one more
important focus we need to have in this
state of overwhelming exposure being
able to connect and relate to everyone
through
the internet and cloud can create a
feeling that we don’t need to figure out
our own path we can simply latch on to
everyone else’s whereas we used to go to
the gym to play basketball and hang out
with friends we can now sit in our
living room and play NBA 2k with friends
over the Internet the same goes for
career paths passions and interests
instead of going to the hospital to
bring joy to sick patients we can feel
good about ourselves by liking a picture
on facebook to wish someone a full
recovery these are examples of using the
Internet’s power to connect in a
negative way as it makes us lazy and
complacent technology affords us so many
different options career paths interests
and friends we can easily lose sight of
the oldest proven way of succeeding
attaching ourselves to the right role
models and aspirations here is how we
can use the power to connect in a
constructive way no matter what area in
life we can all clearly see that the
recipe to success is to compare
ourselves to the people we want to be
common watch any sport legends interview
and you’ll hear them talk about their
greatest role model the Manning brothers
pain in Eli compared themselves to their
father the legendary Archie Manning and
pushed themselves to the highest levels
by using him as their benchmark Warren
Buffett the greatest investor of our
time has said he is 85% Benjamin Graham
and 15% Phil Fisher two great investors
before him even the Talmud is replete
with stories of people looking to
emulate as tractate suka tells us the
story of Teddy the righteous slave who
would sleep under the bed of his masters
in the outdoor suka to overhear their
words of Torah and wisdom they would
speak at night just so that he too could
become a knowledgeable master one day
these giants in their respective fields
all shared one trait in common they
compared themselves to those above them
in their identified path
and use it to motivate them and guide
them to success even my grandfather in
Antwerp who only had one potential
mentor a diamond dealer grabbed onto
that opportunity and started his own
business we have infinite possibilities
we can choose and relate to whomever we
want but we need to actually go out and
do it Rema Lenny which I think I am
typical need to set our goals and find
our role models in order to become the
most successful generation in American
history so I have challenged myself and
I challenge you
my fellow Millennials to take this gift
this power of technology and use it to
your advantage if you want to be a pro
surfer use the Internet to study surfing
techniques to find the right teachers
and to find the best pro surfer in the
world as a role model to aspire to but
then go do it don’t be complacent to
live vicariously through the lives of
pro surfers as you watch them celebrate
their successes in their snapchat
stories let us find the right role
models the people we want to be and even
surpass and let’s do the research to
figure out how to get there let’s make
those phone calls read everything at our
disposal until we are convinced we have
found our one true path to destiny and
know what we need to do to succeed use
the tools we are so fortunate to have to
your advantage rather than allow them to
distract us and make us complacent the
older generations often think of us
Millennials as lazy and entitled by
utilizing the opportunities and tools
afforded to us we can turn what some
believe is our weakness into our
greatest strengths and find our true
destiny thank you
