entry by entry to see why things placed
where they did and give you a little
insight into our thought process around
here today’s list is the best television
shows of 2017 and we want to give a
special shout out to PayPal for making
this list happen by the way let’s check
out that rank okay well joining me today
on the panel is Rebecca Brayton we will
recognize from our voiceover and Emily
Raven who you’ll recognize from the
voice over over on Miz mojo which you
are subscribed to right they’re
technically related it’s a fun time
technically yes yes that’s just a little
anyway all right shall we get into it
let’s do it
yes okay number ten is Legion or Rachel
no not that at all open this up with a
little with a little comment from us
wind Kumar who says Legion is so
underrated the show was really good and
deserves a better spot now I will say
first of all getting into the top ten of
the year he’s commendable in and of
itself agreed so yes it’s just an honor
to be nominated but our director was
saying that this was uh actually it’s
criminally underrated
twos oh yeah well I start by saying Dan
Stevens is having a huge year yeah yeah
so like I I didn’t watch Downton Abbey
so I didn’t know who I know so I didn’t
know who he was before 2017 but now I
definitely do and Beauty and the Beast
he’s in that Christmas movie in vain you
invented many buzz yeah um you know
there was something else he’s in and
then this of course right and this
unfortunately I feel like it flew under
the radar I will agree with the comment
to say it is kind of underrated I feel
like it might have something to do with
the fact that it’s on FX I don’t know
yeah I mean like superhero shows have
classically I mean classically like in
the last few years been on Netflix well
but
it depends like if you like CW shows
you’re gonna like the CW superhero shows
but this is also a marvel also like
hitting yourself with it
tack hammer what have fun doing I am NOT
a fan of those shows I but um no I think
what is most commendable about this show
it’s on a main stymie n– FX’s fox’s
like sort of edgy but it’s still
mainstream television it’s not it’s like
cable TV cable say anything I kind of
yeah I kind of equate FX with AMC and
HBO is hey cuz I I don’t know I might be
wrong I think that’s what they’re
pushing for but they still run like
regular sitcoms all to say for a show
that just goes on regular TV with
commercials and everything like that
this it’s it’s hella weird and I can’t
believe it got greenlit I mean yes it’s
a superhero show but if you look at CW
shows or or something like agents of
shield those shows are pretty safe
they’re safe and silly and this is weird
and not safe yeah I think it’s amazing
that it just got made period agreed I
actually read that they’ve been keeping
den Stevens in the dark about some
things so that he is able to even more
so to be kind of an unreliable narrator
in the show and I thought that was
pretty cool yes I love the unreliable
narrator thing that’s something I always
wanted to do a WatchMojo clip about but
everyone’s like that’s boring down I
think we did that we did yes Fight Club
okay so some people do listen to me I’m
an unreliable narrator that’s a good
place to end eccentric as far as shows
that I was looking forward to this year
I think Rick and Morty was at the top
it’s cuz you’re really really smart I’m
super smart I have like Galaxy level
brain you have to be really smart to to
appreciate Rick and Morty so I forgive
you guys if you don’t fully appreciate
it alright let’s move on from this joke
okay yeah I’m very sorry no I I mean I
loved the I loved the April Fool’s drop
date I was just gonna say that just
started as an April Fool’s gag and I
feel like that is kind of emblematic but
it’s like an anti April Fool’s gag
because you were telling people and
they’d be like haha
it can’t be it’s April Fool’s but it was
so great I’ve talked to some people that
were a little disappointed with this
season but I think it just had a lot on
its shoulders mm-hmm here’s the thing I
have noticed and I noticed this with
another show on our list later which
I’ll get to but seasons of shows that
are heavy on like character development
seem to be polarizing because they seem
slow that’s gonna come back later in our
yeah definitely yeah so and something
about season three Rick and Morty was
that there was a lot of character
development
you know like Beth and Jerry kind of
realized they needed each other how they
you know and well I think one of the
things about comedy shows is that like
it’s hard to develop characters without
ruining this show because the
situation’s are funny because like you
know this character is like a fastidious
conservative and a slovenly liberal so
if they have character arcs and they
change well then the setup of the show
is it is different
Oh argue against that actually I mean
there’s some long-running shows where
the characters develop like okay yes
like but yeah comedy isn’t like that I
find comedy really struggles like but
that’s just anyway back to Rick and
Morty I really felt that this was the
year that Rick and Morty became like a
cultural phenomenon absolutely and I
feel like it gone like it popped if that
makes any sense
still love the show still a huge fan
gonna watch the next one but I feel like
the bubble inflated so fast this year
and there was all of Szechuan and it
exploded have getting Szechuan sauce on
everybody I still love it though so
something like Rick and Morty kind of is
disguised by being animated as being a
kid show but it is definitely not a kid
show and it’s definitely not Back to the
Future it’s definitely not back to the
Patrick I I love it so much I just I
think the writing is just so sharp and
fast like yeah I can’t I I could do a
whole thing on this and then like the
the backlash that anyway I think we have
we have eight more injuries to talk to
so let’s push one big little lies or bll
as it’s known on the street no yeah I
ruined this show I came into the
third-to-last
half episodes I know how it ends yeah
like I mean I guess the twist early on
but well I don’t think that affects how
good emotion yeah it did not ruin it for
me and we were talking before the show
about how this it’s strangely relevant
in today’s political clients yes there’s
another show later on the list that is
also strangely relevant but it’s almost
too on-the-nose but we’ll get to that in
a second yeah yeah I mean this show
obviously was in production before the
Harvey yeah way before like the Harvey
Weinstein and the me too movement and
all that and it’s about women fighting
back against abuse so it’s based on a
book so obviously that story was told
years ago
and it’s told by women about women and I
hesitate to say for women because I do
think men could get some enjoyment and
right yeah I don’t want to say education
about it but it’s something yeah but
yeah I mean it’s just a strangely
relevant show right now what do you what
do you think Emily well I really enjoyed
even though early on you might get a
different impression but it’s ultimately
like women banding together in spirit
and like in the face of something and I
feel like that’s super important for
women watching to see like women
supporting each other and I think that’s
really key I you were also saying that
you really like Nicole Kidman yeah so I
I’m not a huge Nicole Kidman fan usually
I think she makes good movies but I’m
just not whatever but I thought she was
so good in this I was like give her all
the awards guys and I think they did but
I couldn’t believe it plus I loved their
dynamic as a group off-camera to like I
see them at the award shows and they’re
all hugging and kissing and just like oh
we did it you guys I love that dynamic
haven’t seen it yeah but it’s gotten a
season two oh yes it’s officially gotten
a season two there are some bigger lives
coming up yeah which I actually am
worried about because I thought it ended
perfectly yeah yeah it’s really like a
tight narrative right now I’m a little
worried I can only tell by the ending
but it wraps itself up quite nice it
does yeah alright we’ll have to see I
think that wraps up this entry quite
nicely though let’s go
better call Saul this just this show me
okay this show is insanely popular for
what it was I didn’t think it would be
it’s number six I know I just like this
show has never been on my radar although
I would say this year it actually kind
of came onto the radar okay I want to
circle back to that but real quick Bob
Odenkirk is one of those guys that like
that’s that’s the guys names yeah yeah
he’s one of those guys that once you
know who he is you go back and watch I
realize he’s done everything but every
year I write for SNL he’s been around
for so yeah uh Bob and David David you
know he and David Cross huh yeah the mr.
show exactly and he did he does voices
and stuff yeah so what I like about the
success of this show even though he got
he had huge success on Breaking Bad he
was a very successful character there I
just feel like Bob is finally getting
his day so it’s very satisfying to see
to see him waiting just why also love
Michael McKean yeah I mean he’s I’ve I
don’t want to call him underrated cuz
he’s been work he’s like a very one of
those yeah guys yeah well I love them
gonna be clue he’s in clue right yeah
that’s a lame like he’s the guy that’s
in all of those Christopher David guest
movies Chris yeah Chris Fergus
Christopher Guest movies yes
yeah he’s hilarious um so one thing oh I
also that’s actually something I love
about a show like this it’s all these
comedic actors doing dramatic really
yeah darker stuff yeah those guys
especially hmm
one thing that bothers me about prequels
and I find I don’t feel it too much with
this but it’s kind of nagging at the
back of my brain I always like I feel
that you should have mentioned these
crazy events at some like in the real
thing yeah like in Breaking Bad you’re
left to assume that Saul was kind of
like a nobody
hack lawyer up until he meets Walter
White and then his life really goes off
to be fair there’s like no character
development of him at all like it’s not
like they ever have a conversation with
him really like oh is this
how did your history go no but even with
that in mind it makes it it makes it
almost weirder how he’s like this
caricature by the beginning of Breaking
Bad I guess but then there’s this
prequel that where he has this crazy
story anyway that kind of speaks to a
point that I had is it must be difficult
to tell a story that still fits into the
we have to get to this point I like in
terms of getting a prequel to Breaking
Bad is he the character that you would
have wanted to see explored more in that
world i mean i think mike is a better
care I mean Mike gets a huge amount of
time mm-hmm
but he was always the most the coolest
character to me in the regular in
Breaking Bad vanilla I would have seen
what’s-his-name oh yeah yeah he’s on
everything I want to say Saul but it’s
not Saul because that’s this guy Gustavo
Fring novel free yes he would have been
pretty cool and you could have gotten a
different actor for that if you still
work I would not want to okay it’s
amazing okay so actual number six
intrepid viewers may have noticed I made
a mistake last time because you guys
certainly did uh stranger things maybe
you’ve heard of it
okay I’ll I think this is my actual
favorite yes I had the same feelings
about this show that I did the last one
it’s like us like the most solid eight
on Tim you know what I mean like it’s
very good I thought it was very
satisfying but it just never goes over
the top I’m never like surprised by it
well this was the show I was referring
to in the Rick and Morty entry about
character development seasons being
polarizing with viewers oh absolutely
and that’s what I felt about this season
although because I’ve 11 episode 7 I
mean I actually didn’t like episode 7
but I did love this season I didn’t
think it was the okay so I got to the
office and I was watching stranger
things super late and everyone’s like
are you on episode 7 yet oh you just
wait cuz it’s weird typically Rebecca
was saying that so I was super braced
for it I was like
and it wasn’t the worst I just wasn’t
big on the the other girl and I just
thought she was kind of a not a great
actress I just I mean I don’t
I liked her look yeah I like I like 11
as not a negative character and that was
seeing her kind of turned to the dark
side because it was a very Star Wars the
episode oh yeah you know what felt like
it felt like I’m sorry to cut you guys
always it felt like they took one of
their ideas for the whole season and was
just like oh let’s just make that one
episode because 11 if you think about it
her story is quite separate from the
main plot mmm like she has her whole
thing with Harper in the woods separate
hopper hopper did I say Harper uh-huh
she has that whole thing with the former
Prime Minister of Canada and then like
so it makes um do you guys think this
should be higher on the list I guess it
do I totally think it should be higher I
don’t know what’s happening over at that
WatchMojo but you guys got to get your
stuff together yeah but um anyway I I
loved this season it I cried like eight
times I thought I thought it was so
emotional and I loved it and these kids
are just amazing I can’t even deal with
it and Steve Harrington do Steve Harry’s
dad dad Steve dad Steve leaves hair is
my spirit animal
just the hair it’s so fun watching the
original series beacon or like season
one because oh my god his hair still
quaffed and perfect and now it’s just
now it’s just like wild and so is he and
I love I love Steve Harrington so much
oh that’s what’s the new additions we’re
also good new additions were also good
um man I I wish they was higher up a
lift so it would make more sense to talk
like that again but the bully character
whose name I forgot did your memory well
what’s his name it Billy on the show
yeah that was a weird thing I wasn’t
sure where they were going with it and
then I figured out where they were going
with it and they didn’t really go there
well he went there yeah I watched three
on stranger things which is the kind of
companying show and they said that that
was kind of what they had anticipated
for Steve but then Steve became such a
likeable character that they couldn’t do
that with him so they want
they wanted to fully yeah so that’s what
I mean he is an effective bully there
are a number of scenes where you’re just
like I know but then I hope this isn’t a
spoiler you kind of learn maybe why he’s
a bully yes
yeah almost everyone gets her a
Redemption arc including Paul Reiser
most surprisingly because he comes in
he’s like hey folks I’m evil I never
okay so I haven’t seen alien okay but
actually that’s not true I’ve seen one
of them I know but not that one
I did never I never thought that he was
gonna be evil I said no polarizer is
gonna redeem himself he’s going to be a
good guy at the end and maybe I was
right maybe I was wrong I don’t know
watch it to find out alright so number
five for real is master of none and I
got a comment here to lead us in I’m
sorry there is no way master of none is
more popular than stranger things and
that was from danger dock 83 well attend
I don’t disagree with it I don’t
disagree either I guess the user votes
got really stacked maybe yeah on our
suggests page maybe that’s the only
explanation I can really think of so the
users oh you’re a fickle Bunch
now I’m surprised that this show is
still popular not because I dislike it
but I just thought the world had reached
peak Aziz Ansari like a year or two ago
so here’s the thing about Aziz I know
him as a stand-up comedian right and I
love the stand-up comedy and I know him
from Parks and Rec so yeah so I did you
say Jim or Tom Tom huh okay so I think
like I know him is kind of like a goofy
guy right he’s goofy on Parks and Rec
but so the fact that he can successfully
be a relatable leading man in this show
is quite a testament to his talent in
the comedy but it’s a drunk dramedy
honestly one of the most intelligent
people in Hollywood right now
I think cuz I read his book modern
romance where he like analyzed how love
works in the digital age and just the
modern world and he’s super intelligent
and has findings and things like that
and just like can talk about current pop
culture
like no one else because I see that book
on store shelves and I’m thinking that’s
his texting with a girl about a pizza
party shtick long-form hotter than that
yeah Oh way better than that yeah now
what did you how did you guys feel about
this season though because it they
really changed years right like he’s not
in New York anymore right
well it does explore more of like pre
like this time period like okay shows
him as a kid and shows the co-writer
Lina waif as well like she is a super
important fixture of the of the current
season because she explores her
sexuality and stuff like that and like
thus was recognized very appropriately
in award season and yeah like it’s it’s
way more I don’t think it depends on
where it is because there’s parts of
there in Italy as well yeah yeah yeah
okay
so bringing it back to how we started
number five on the list do you think you
should be going up or down if you could
choose on my personal list yeah it would
be lower this the show I mean the show
is very today it’s very noble you know
very yeah I’m I don’t want to say
relevant it’s just like it seemed I
don’t even want to use the word
millennial either but you just I know
let’s just circle those okay terms we’re
putting those in the keywords tags it’s
just it is very now okay and I think you
know like a lot of the shows on this
list it came at the right time wait a
waffle on that answer Rebecca number
five upper no I sit down okay down right
on my list okay there I think it would
stay for me but everything else would
move around I would have to watch more
in order to give an opinion it’s a bit
of a bummer for me though yeah it is
yeah cuz like it’s a now show but now
it’s not it’s very real it’s too real
for me
thankfully none of the other shows we’re
gonna get to today or bombers womp-womp
okay number four is Twin Peaks and I
know this was divisive even amongst fans
and I think nothing epitomizes the
divisive nature of this show than these
two comments
putting twin peaks’ the return at number
four is a sin it’s easily the best show
of the year and of all time it goes on
but I’ll switch to another comment which
says I just don’t get it what’s so great
about Twin Peaks both hot takes both
hotcakes a how can they both be hot
takes one is like it’s great the other
guys like what’s a big so I enjoyed the
first four episodes of this okay in one
night I don’t necessarily recommend
doing that no she was not right the bad
standing yes right we’re been eating
weird snacks and I had like crazy dreams
to know but it okay if you saw it
original Twin Peaks was weird
on a network like on ABC yeah I did
David Lynch was able to go full David
Lynch in this one lately on Lynch on
this one there you go I’m sorry guys you
know like the whole thing is that little
person in the room really but like it’s
that weird you know yeah yeah it’s like
just so the weirdest point of Twin Peaks
stretched out to a full length
television show yes so well actually
it’s almost like the whole thing is one
long movie okay cuz it’s not episodic
mmm wait okay so what would you say
about its rank like cuz you it seems
like you enjoyed it although it’s I
would not say that you would not say
that no I would not say I enjoyed it but
I haven’t finished it okay so I feel
like for me a lot of the enjoyment comes
from wrapping things up and and kind of
solving the mysteries and so on yeah I
find it’s very tempting to always
dismiss twin people but okay I like the
original but I I know why it’s tempting
to kind of dismiss it as an emperor’s
new clothes thing it’s weird for the
sake of being weird
and if you don’t get it it means you’re
dumb and you just don’t get it man when
I think there’s a valid it’s relatively
developed to say like yeah I this is
like I said it’s way weirder than
original Twin Peaks like for me anyway I
whatever this is my opinion was it and
like it looks like you’re you’ve got
something in your head yes a say it say
what’s in your face right now
well okay I did not watch it I have
never Twin Peaks
but something like Riverdale 4 for
instance has been very open about the
fact that Twin Peaks was a huge
influence and it’s like how can
Riverdale be such a popular show and be
dark teen but like no one likes Twin
Peaks so it’s like oh it’s definitely
not that no one likes Twin Peaks no I
know I mean like again I’m going with
the users on this one because yeah but
not you know what I think it’s one of
those shows that oh this is gonna get me
in trouble but like that’s so weird
yeah that’s it’s like that you were kind
of getting there that it’s so weird and
people are like if you don’t get it and
you know like it’s almost like well I I
like it so I must get it so I must be
super smart
oh sweet like Rick and Morty a little
bit right
like putting Mulholland Drive on best
movies ever contentious alright next
show is the elephant in the room not
elephant in the room but this is the
show that you knew was gonna be on this
list you just didn’t know where like
you’re doing top top new television
shows of the well of the last 10 years
and it’s just it’s just a matter of
where you put Game of Thrones Game of
Thrones had a good year did in my
opinion the ladies of Game of Thrones
had an even better well that okay well
not all of them there are always
exceptions um I just okay so I feel like
the show is leaning a bit too hard into
fanservice nowadays like there now that
they’re Unwerth ins books and his
guidance they can just do what they want
or what they feel that fans have been
looking for like I didn’t ship any
characters I I thought that shit was
ridiculous
yeah but um these two right but here’s
the thing I think what I liked about
Game of Thrones is it took what you
wanted to happen
and always did the opposite like you’re
like I like this character and they die
or you’re like I think this is a cool
arc and they’re like well that arc is
over by so I think that’s what made it
special so I’m not saying that this is
the season is bad because of that I’m
just saying I don’t think it’s
necessarily sustainable if that makes
sense
I feel
doesn’t it be a slow burn no I know
which is fine yeah I think next season
possibly will undo anything we like it
gives you things to care about in a
whole season because thus far it’s like
you have one episode to care about
something or a season in this darhk’s
case well but then the episode
afterwards you lose it but then like if
we have a whole season of it and then we
lose everything in like the final scene
it’s raising the stakes it’s raising the
stakes and basically like we’ll lose
everything we love can I talk about
zombie dragon you can talk about zombie
dragon man like whoever hasn’t seen Game
of Thrones isn’t that interested in Game
of Thrones I guess let’s they’re like
deploy well that’s the thing about this
season though you like other seasons you
know I I always watch it live but not
everyone in the office does that right
but this year I could talk about it with
people on Monday because everybody
thought it was yeah parents were
watching it you know my dad’s like how
do you get me the new game our parents
would watch the the recap that she did
and then be like oh can you don’t
Daenerys did this and we’re like why do
you know that name they know everything
yeah and that’s what I think is most
commendable about Game of Thrones at
least these days is that it’s like it’s
a cultural phenomenon like a tour de
force yeah like who shot junior that
left like beyond that level it’s like
the Star Wars of TV shows you know yeah
so how do you think’s gonna add I
haven’t even gone whole case so number
two the leftovers
now I said before that I thought Twin
Peaks was the most contentious entry
most divisive I’ll take it back man as
far as the spectrum of this whole top 10
goes and the ranking that people were
upset about bad comments I mean okay
number two the leftovers that show
sucked with and Sarah Molina also said
I’m sorry what the heck is the leftovers
I’ve never heard of this show how did
that surpass game of effing thrones
several question marks and exclamation
points she she had emphasis hmm so I
would call this show under view
but yes in no way underrated okay
because their critics were about the
leftovers yeah
but under viewed neither of us a see
right so well I don’t want to spoil too
and I’m a TV person but it’s it’s a very
month I don’t like emotional shows okay
like I I have a very close friend that
watches a lot of this is us and I yeah
this is by the way contender for this
list in my opinion I think so too
probably on the MS mojo yeah it’s gonna
be on the MS mojo list for sure but but
I’m not you it’s a very well made show
but I don’t actually like it because I
don’t like emotions very I don’t like
feeling I don’t like feelings well I
like feelings like excitement laughter I
don’t like Oh existential dread and so
dealing with loss which i think is
dealing with loss it’s it’s heavy
it is a heavy show but I recommend it
for those of you that like those heavy
themes you don’t have to be smart like
Rick and Morty but you just got to be
you got to be in for some emotional
stuff like look at Justin right here
first of all gotta love that back but
anyway anyway I gotta fans I’m I’m an
average fan of Justin okay yeah but uh
from what I understand and I’ve seen
clips the performances on the show are
just out of this world cocoon and they
do a great job so those of you who
haven’t seen it and are upset at our
ranking we beg you to give it a solid
chance and then come back and tell us we
were right I know I think that’s
probably why sorry to know it’s funny
but I think that’s probably why we did
put it this high on the list is to
encourage people to give it a chance
right yes which is as these comments
will exemplify it risky but what are you
gonna do
it’s our champ number one is the
Handmaid’s Tale now it’s critical
darling I think audiences liked it
couple of people had some comments I’m
not gonna read them all but the words
piss trash and pretentious crap are
there now you gonna have a hard disagree
with all of these need to budget I need
I can see why this shows a hard sell
like visually you look at a picture
you’re like that looks boring AF yeah I
feel like you need to be in a mood to
watch this yeah absolutely
I mean that mood is to be willing to be
depressed about the future of humanity
or the present honestly yeah you were
saying that this is uh it’s pretty well
yeah I mean we kind of touched on how
later in the list there would be another
show that was very now and very yeah you
know like about the women’s movement
sort of and this is it yeah although
again written a long time ago
yeah like the book was I actually know
Margaret Atwood yeah yeah makes a cameo
in the show yeah sure and there’s
another Margaret Atwood show that got
made this year alias grace that is
fairly oh sweet I think you’re in
Stephen King having the best time yeah
except for the Dark Tower of anyway but
back to the Handmaid’s Tale I was
thinking that her performances are great
we mentioned her name before the show
and I’ve already for Lizabeth loss
Elisabeth Moss who I wasn’t crazy about
as Peggy on Mad Men even though she’s
basically the star of the show yeah I
mean I I like the character of Peggy on
Mad Men yeah I know I I’m kind of
indifferent towards her yeah as a
general rule but she was really good in
this like her narration mixed with a
little subtle ticks on her face I
thought was just fantastic mm-hmm
oh the show really has an oppressive
atmosphere though it’s like that’s the
idea yeah
bogs you down like SNL parodied it and
they hardly touched it
they heard the time like they didn’t
want to make fun of it too much um no
like they didn’t have to yeah oh you
mean like it like it’s almost beyond
parody yeah yeah oh jeez pardon yon you
beyond
very good Emily that’s a Dan that’s
great
any other thoughts I mean what about the
other performances in the show um I was
a little surprised about Yvonne
Strahovski right casting and just
because you didn’t touch chuckling I
didn’t watch Chuck I know her from
Dexter you know her from Mass Effect as
though he’s Mass Effect 2 that’s making
Emily but mostly – um and so like I
didn’t think of her as like this
oppressive boss lady who slapped
around her hand man yeah yeah not to be
a huge bar but I mean she did a great
job
yeah no I I think it’s a great show I I
hope it’s one of these shows
I hope they end at an appropriate time
because I think cuz every show that’s
the the end of this season was the end
of the book yeah exactly
yeah and I just hope it doesn’t jump the
shark too much because it’s it’s really
good as it is and it’s a shame when good
shows jump oh I’m terrible
yeah what do you guys think number one
still I think it’s the most 2017 show on
this list are you agreeing that it’s a
good pick for WatchMojo stop ten but not
your own personal uh no i’d agree with
that you beat up maybe my top three yeah
in your top three yeah okay fair enough
yeah um I I mean I’ve been working here
so long I find it hard to not judge
things from a like a WatchMojo
perspective where you have to like
cultural impact and how good it was and
then like a mix of hot what the fans
thinking but yeah this one’s sound like
pretty solid for one especially after a
whole list of nine more where we’re like

so I think it’s nice to cap it off with
a relatively solid entry despite what

deconstructed where we take a list that
we’ve already done and break it down
entry by entry to see why things placed
where they did and give you a little
insight into our thought process around
here today’s list is the best television
shows of 2017 and we want to give a
special shout out to PayPal for making

on the panel is Rebecca Brayton we will

Raven who you’ll recognize from the

are subscribed to right they’re
technically related it’s a fun time
technically yes yes that’s just a little
anyway all right shall we get into it
let’s do it
yes okay number ten is Legion or Rachel
no not that at all open this up with a
little with a little comment from us
wind Kumar who says Legion is so
underrated the show was really good and
deserves a better spot now I will say
first of all getting into the top ten of
the year he’s commendable in and of
itself agreed so yes it’s just an honor
to be nominated but our director was
saying that this was uh actually it’s
criminally underrated
twos oh yeah well I start by saying Dan
Stevens is having a huge year yeah yeah
so like I I didn’t watch Downton Abbey
so I didn’t know who I know so I didn’t
know who he was before 2017 but now I
definitely do and Beauty and the Beast
he’s in that Christmas movie in vain you
invented many buzz yeah um you know
there was something else he’s in and
then this of course right and this
unfortunately I feel like it flew under
the radar I will agree with the comment
to say it is kind of underrated I feel
like it might have something to do with
the fact that it’s on FX I don’t know
yeah I mean like superhero shows have
classically I mean classically like in
the last few years been on Netflix well
but
it depends like if you like CW shows
you’re gonna like the CW superhero shows
but this is also a marvel also like
hitting yourself with it
tack hammer what have fun doing I am NOT
a fan of those shows I but um no I think
what is most commendable about this show
it’s on a main stymie n– FX’s fox’s
like sort of edgy but it’s still
mainstream television it’s not it’s like
cable TV cable say anything I kind of
yeah I kind of equate FX with AMC and
HBO is hey cuz I I don’t know I might be
wrong I think that’s what they’re
pushing for but they still run like
regular sitcoms all to say for a show
that just goes on regular TV with
commercials and everything like that
this it’s it’s hella weird and I can’t
believe it got greenlit I mean yes it’s
a superhero show but if you look at CW
shows or or something like agents of
shield those shows are pretty safe
they’re safe and silly and this is weird
and not safe yeah I think it’s amazing
that it just got made period agreed I
actually read that they’ve been keeping
den Stevens in the dark about some
things so that he is able to even more
so to be kind of an unreliable narrator
in the show and I thought that was
pretty cool yes I love the unreliable
narrator thing that’s something I always
wanted to do a WatchMojo clip about but
everyone’s like that’s boring down I
think we did that we did yes Fight Club
okay so some people do listen to me I’m
an unreliable narrator that’s a good
place to end eccentric as far as shows
that I was looking forward to this year
I think Rick and Morty was at the top
it’s cuz you’re really really smart I’m
super smart I have like Galaxy level
brain you have to be really smart to to
appreciate Rick and Morty so I forgive
you guys if you don’t fully appreciate
it alright let’s move on from this joke
okay yeah I’m very sorry no I I mean I
loved the I loved the April Fool’s drop
date I was just gonna say that just
started as an April Fool’s gag and I
feel like that is kind of emblematic but
it’s like an anti April Fool’s gag
because you were telling people and
they’d be like haha
it can’t be it’s April Fool’s but it was
so great I’ve talked to some people that
were a little disappointed with this
season but I think it just had a lot on
its shoulders mm-hmm here’s the thing I
have noticed and I noticed this with
another show on our list later which
I’ll get to but seasons of shows that
are heavy on like character development
seem to be polarizing because they seem
slow that’s gonna come back later in our
yeah definitely yeah so and something
about season three Rick and Morty was
that there was a lot of character
development
you know like Beth and Jerry kind of
realized they needed each other how they
you know and well I think one of the
things about comedy shows is that like
it’s hard to develop characters without
ruining this show because the
situation’s are funny because like you
know this character is like a fastidious
conservative and a slovenly liberal so
if they have character arcs and they
change well then the setup of the show
is it is different
Oh argue against that actually I mean
there’s some long-running shows where
the characters develop like okay yes
like but yeah comedy isn’t like that I
find comedy really struggles like but
that’s just anyway back to Rick and
Morty I really felt that this was the
year that Rick and Morty became like a
cultural phenomenon absolutely and I
feel like it gone like it popped if that
makes any sense
still love the show still a huge fan
gonna watch the next one but I feel like
the bubble inflated so fast this year
and there was all of Szechuan and it
exploded have getting Szechuan sauce on
everybody I still love it though so
something like Rick and Morty kind of is
disguised by being animated as being a
kid show but it is definitely not a kid
show and it’s definitely not Back to the
Future it’s definitely not back to the
Patrick I I love it so much I just I
think the writing is just so sharp and
fast like yeah I can’t I I could do a
whole thing on this and then like the
the backlash that anyway I think we have
we have eight more injuries to talk to
so let’s push one big little lies or bll
as it’s known on the street no yeah I
ruined this show I came into the
third-to-last
half episodes I know how it ends yeah
like I mean I guess the twist early on
but well I don’t think that affects how
good emotion yeah it did not ruin it for
me and we were talking before the show
about how this it’s strangely relevant
in today’s political clients yes there’s
another show later on the list that is
also strangely relevant but it’s almost
too on-the-nose but we’ll get to that in
a second yeah yeah I mean this show
obviously was in production before the
Harvey yeah way before like the Harvey
Weinstein and the me too movement and
all that and it’s about women fighting
back against abuse so it’s based on a
book so obviously that story was told
years ago
and it’s told by women about women and I
hesitate to say for women because I do
think men could get some enjoyment and
right yeah I don’t want to say education
about it but it’s something yeah but
yeah I mean it’s just a strangely
relevant show right now what do you what
do you think Emily well I really enjoyed
even though early on you might get a
different impression but it’s ultimately
like women banding together in spirit
and like in the face of something and I
feel like that’s super important for
women watching to see like women
supporting each other and I think that’s
really key I you were also saying that
you really like Nicole Kidman yeah so I
I’m not a huge Nicole Kidman fan usually
I think she makes good movies but I’m
just not whatever but I thought she was
so good in this I was like give her all
the awards guys and I think they did but
I couldn’t believe it plus I loved their
dynamic as a group off-camera to like I
see them at the award shows and they’re
all hugging and kissing and just like oh
we did it you guys I love that dynamic
haven’t seen it yeah but it’s gotten a
season two oh yes it’s officially gotten
a season two there are some bigger lives
coming up yeah which I actually am
worried about because I thought it ended
perfectly yeah yeah it’s really like a
tight narrative right now I’m a little
worried I can only tell by the ending
but it wraps itself up quite nice it
does yeah alright we’ll have to see I
think that wraps up this entry quite
nicely though let’s go
better call Saul this just this show me
okay this show is insanely popular for
what it was I didn’t think it would be
it’s number six I know I just like this
show has never been on my radar although
I would say this year it actually kind
of came onto the radar okay I want to
circle back to that but real quick Bob
Odenkirk is one of those guys that like
that’s that’s the guys names yeah yeah
he’s one of those guys that once you
know who he is you go back and watch I
realize he’s done everything but every
year I write for SNL he’s been around
for so yeah uh Bob and David David you
know he and David Cross huh yeah the mr.
show exactly and he did he does voices
and stuff yeah so what I like about the
success of this show even though he got
he had huge success on Breaking Bad he
was a very successful character there I
just feel like Bob is finally getting
his day so it’s very satisfying to see
to see him waiting just why also love
Michael McKean yeah I mean he’s I’ve I
don’t want to call him underrated cuz
he’s been work he’s like a very one of
those yeah guys yeah well I love them
gonna be clue he’s in clue right yeah
that’s a lame like he’s the guy that’s
in all of those Christopher David guest
movies Chris yeah Chris Fergus
Christopher Guest movies yes
yeah he’s hilarious um so one thing oh I
also that’s actually something I love
about a show like this it’s all these
comedic actors doing dramatic really
yeah darker stuff yeah those guys
especially hmm
one thing that bothers me about prequels
and I find I don’t feel it too much with
this but it’s kind of nagging at the
back of my brain I always like I feel
that you should have mentioned these
crazy events at some like in the real
thing yeah like in Breaking Bad you’re
left to assume that Saul was kind of
like a nobody
hack lawyer up until he meets Walter
White and then his life really goes off
to be fair there’s like no character
development of him at all like it’s not
like they ever have a conversation with
him really like oh is this
how did your history go no but even with
that in mind it makes it it makes it
almost weirder how he’s like this
caricature by the beginning of Breaking
Bad I guess but then there’s this
prequel that where he has this crazy
story anyway that kind of speaks to a
point that I had is it must be difficult
to tell a story that still fits into the
we have to get to this point I like in
terms of getting a prequel to Breaking
Bad is he the character that you would
have wanted to see explored more in that
world i mean i think mike is a better
care I mean Mike gets a huge amount of
time mm-hmm
but he was always the most the coolest
character to me in the regular in
Breaking Bad vanilla I would have seen
what’s-his-name oh yeah yeah he’s on
everything I want to say Saul but it’s
not Saul because that’s this guy Gustavo
Fring novel free yes he would have been
pretty cool and you could have gotten a
different actor for that if you still
work I would not want to okay it’s
amazing okay so actual number six
intrepid viewers may have noticed I made
a mistake last time because you guys
certainly did uh stranger things maybe
you’ve heard of it
okay I’ll I think this is my actual
favorite yes I had the same feelings
about this show that I did the last one
it’s like us like the most solid eight
on Tim you know what I mean like it’s
very good I thought it was very
satisfying but it just never goes over
the top I’m never like surprised by it
well this was the show I was referring
to in the Rick and Morty entry about
character development seasons being
polarizing with viewers oh absolutely
and that’s what I felt about this season
although because I’ve 11 episode 7 I
mean I actually didn’t like episode 7
but I did love this season I didn’t
think it was the okay so I got to the
office and I was watching stranger
things super late and everyone’s like
are you on episode 7 yet oh you just
wait cuz it’s weird typically Rebecca
was saying that so I was super braced
for it I was like
and it wasn’t the worst I just wasn’t
big on the the other girl and I just
thought she was kind of a not a great
actress I just I mean I don’t
I liked her look yeah I like I like 11
as not a negative character and that was
seeing her kind of turned to the dark
side because it was a very Star Wars the
episode oh yeah you know what felt like
it felt like I’m sorry to cut you guys
always it felt like they took one of
their ideas for the whole season and was
just like oh let’s just make that one
episode because 11 if you think about it
her story is quite separate from the
main plot mmm like she has her whole
thing with Harper in the woods separate
hopper hopper did I say Harper uh-huh
she has that whole thing with the former
Prime Minister of Canada and then like
so it makes um do you guys think this
should be higher on the list I guess it
do I totally think it should be higher I
don’t know what’s happening over at that
WatchMojo but you guys got to get your
stuff together yeah but um anyway I I
loved this season it I cried like eight
times I thought I thought it was so
emotional and I loved it and these kids
are just amazing I can’t even deal with
it and Steve Harrington do Steve Harry’s
dad dad Steve dad Steve leaves hair is
my spirit animal
just the hair it’s so fun watching the
original series beacon or like season
one because oh my god his hair still
quaffed and perfect and now it’s just
now it’s just like wild and so is he and
I love I love Steve Harrington so much
oh that’s what’s the new additions we’re
also good new additions were also good
um man I I wish they was higher up a
lift so it would make more sense to talk
like that again but the bully character
whose name I forgot did your memory well
what’s his name it Billy on the show
yeah that was a weird thing I wasn’t
sure where they were going with it and
then I figured out where they were going
with it and they didn’t really go there
well he went there yeah I watched three
on stranger things which is the kind of
companying show and they said that that
was kind of what they had anticipated
for Steve but then Steve became such a
likeable character that they couldn’t do
that with him so they want
they wanted to fully yeah so that’s what
I mean he is an effective bully there
are a number of scenes where you’re just
like I know but then I hope this isn’t a
spoiler you kind of learn maybe why he’s
a bully yes
yeah almost everyone gets her a
Redemption arc including Paul Reiser
most surprisingly because he comes in
he’s like hey folks I’m evil I never
okay so I haven’t seen alien okay but
actually that’s not true I’ve seen one
of them I know but not that one
I did never I never thought that he was
gonna be evil I said no polarizer is
gonna redeem himself he’s going to be a
good guy at the end and maybe I was
right maybe I was wrong I don’t know
watch it to find out alright so number
five for real is master of none and I
got a comment here to lead us in I’m
sorry there is no way master of none is
more popular than stranger things and
that was from danger dock 83 well attend
I don’t disagree with it I don’t
disagree either I guess the user votes
got really stacked maybe yeah on our
suggests page maybe that’s the only
explanation I can really think of so the
users oh you’re a fickle Bunch
now I’m surprised that this show is
still popular not because I dislike it
but I just thought the world had reached
peak Aziz Ansari like a year or two ago
so here’s the thing about Aziz I know
him as a stand-up comedian right and I
love the stand-up comedy and I know him
from Parks and Rec so yeah so I did you
say Jim or Tom Tom huh okay so I think
like I know him is kind of like a goofy
guy right he’s goofy on Parks and Rec
but so the fact that he can successfully
be a relatable leading man in this show
is quite a testament to his talent in
the comedy but it’s a drunk dramedy
honestly one of the most intelligent
people in Hollywood right now
I think cuz I read his book modern
romance where he like analyzed how love
works in the digital age and just the
modern world and he’s super intelligent
and has findings and things like that
and just like can talk about current pop
culture
like no one else because I see that book
on store shelves and I’m thinking that’s
his texting with a girl about a pizza
party shtick long-form hotter than that
yeah Oh way better than that yeah now
what did you how did you guys feel about
this season though because it they
really changed years right like he’s not
in New York anymore right
well it does explore more of like pre
like this time period like okay shows
him as a kid and shows the co-writer
Lina waif as well like she is a super
important fixture of the of the current
season because she explores her
sexuality and stuff like that and like
thus was recognized very appropriately
in award season and yeah like it’s it’s
way more I don’t think it depends on
where it is because there’s parts of
there in Italy as well yeah yeah yeah
okay
so bringing it back to how we started
number five on the list do you think you
should be going up or down if you could
choose on my personal list yeah it would
be lower this the show I mean the show
is very today it’s very noble you know
very yeah I’m I don’t want to say
relevant it’s just like it seemed I
don’t even want to use the word
millennial either but you just I know
let’s just circle those okay terms we’re
putting those in the keywords tags it’s
just it is very now okay and I think you
know like a lot of the shows on this
list it came at the right time wait a
waffle on that answer Rebecca number
five upper no I sit down okay down right
on my list okay there I think it would
stay for me but everything else would
move around I would have to watch more
in order to give an opinion it’s a bit
of a bummer for me though yeah it is
yeah cuz like it’s a now show but now
it’s not it’s very real it’s too real
for me
thankfully none of the other shows we’re
gonna get to today or bombers womp-womp
okay number four is Twin Peaks and I
know this was divisive even amongst fans
and I think nothing epitomizes the
divisive nature of this show than these
two comments
putting twin peaks’ the return at number
four is a sin it’s easily the best show
of the year and of all time it goes on
but I’ll switch to another comment which
says I just don’t get it what’s so great
about Twin Peaks both hot takes both
hotcakes a how can they both be hot
takes one is like it’s great the other
guys like what’s a big so I enjoyed the
first four episodes of this okay in one
night I don’t necessarily recommend
doing that no she was not right the bad
standing yes right we’re been eating
weird snacks and I had like crazy dreams
to know but it okay if you saw it
original Twin Peaks was weird
on a network like on ABC yeah I did
David Lynch was able to go full David
Lynch in this one lately on Lynch on
this one there you go I’m sorry guys you
know like the whole thing is that little
person in the room really but like it’s
that weird you know yeah yeah it’s like
just so the weirdest point of Twin Peaks
stretched out to a full length
television show yes so well actually
it’s almost like the whole thing is one
long movie okay cuz it’s not episodic
mmm wait okay so what would you say
about its rank like cuz you it seems
like you enjoyed it although it’s I
would not say that you would not say
that no I would not say I enjoyed it but
I haven’t finished it okay so I feel
like for me a lot of the enjoyment comes
from wrapping things up and and kind of
solving the mysteries and so on yeah I
find it’s very tempting to always
dismiss twin people but okay I like the
original but I I know why it’s tempting
to kind of dismiss it as an emperor’s
new clothes thing it’s weird for the
sake of being weird
and if you don’t get it it means you’re
dumb and you just don’t get it man when
I think there’s a valid it’s relatively
developed to say like yeah I this is
like I said it’s way weirder than
original Twin Peaks like for me anyway I
whatever this is my opinion was it and
like it looks like you’re you’ve got
something in your head yes a say it say
what’s in your face right now
well okay I did not watch it I have
never Twin Peaks
but something like Riverdale 4 for
instance has been very open about the
fact that Twin Peaks was a huge
influence and it’s like how can
Riverdale be such a popular show and be
dark teen but like no one likes Twin
Peaks so it’s like oh it’s definitely
not that no one likes Twin Peaks no I
know I mean like again I’m going with
the users on this one because yeah but
not you know what I think it’s one of
those shows that oh this is gonna get me
in trouble but like that’s so weird
yeah that’s it’s like that you were kind
of getting there that it’s so weird and
people are like if you don’t get it and
you know like it’s almost like well I I
like it so I must get it so I must be
super smart
oh sweet like Rick and Morty a little
bit right
like putting Mulholland Drive on best
movies ever contentious alright next
show is the elephant in the room not
elephant in the room but this is the
show that you knew was gonna be on this
list you just didn’t know where like
you’re doing top top new television
shows of the well of the last 10 years
and it’s just it’s just a matter of
where you put Game of Thrones Game of
Thrones had a good year did in my
opinion the ladies of Game of Thrones
had an even better well that okay well
not all of them there are always
exceptions um I just okay so I feel like
the show is leaning a bit too hard into
fanservice nowadays like there now that
they’re Unwerth ins books and his
guidance they can just do what they want
or what they feel that fans have been
looking for like I didn’t ship any
characters I I thought that shit was
ridiculous
yeah but um these two right but here’s
the thing I think what I liked about
Game of Thrones is it took what you
wanted to happen
and always did the opposite like you’re
like I like this character and they die
or you’re like I think this is a cool
arc and they’re like well that arc is
over by so I think that’s what made it
special so I’m not saying that this is
the season is bad because of that I’m
just saying I don’t think it’s
necessarily sustainable if that makes
sense
I feel
doesn’t it be a slow burn no I know
which is fine yeah I think next season
possibly will undo anything we like it
gives you things to care about in a
whole season because thus far it’s like
you have one episode to care about
something or a season in this darhk’s
case well but then the episode
afterwards you lose it but then like if
we have a whole season of it and then we
lose everything in like the final scene
it’s raising the stakes it’s raising the
stakes and basically like we’ll lose
everything we love can I talk about
zombie dragon you can talk about zombie
dragon man like whoever hasn’t seen Game
of Thrones isn’t that interested in Game
of Thrones I guess let’s they’re like
deploy well that’s the thing about this
season though you like other seasons you
know I I always watch it live but not
everyone in the office does that right
but this year I could talk about it with
people on Monday because everybody
thought it was yeah parents were
watching it you know my dad’s like how
do you get me the new game our parents
would watch the the recap that she did
and then be like oh can you don’t
Daenerys did this and we’re like why do
you know that name they know everything
yeah and that’s what I think is most
commendable about Game of Thrones at
least these days is that it’s like it’s
a cultural phenomenon like a tour de
force yeah like who shot junior that
left like beyond that level it’s like
the Star Wars of TV shows you know yeah
so how do you think’s gonna add I
haven’t even gone whole case so number
two the leftovers
now I said before that I thought Twin
Peaks was the most contentious entry
most divisive I’ll take it back man as
far as the spectrum of this whole top 10
goes and the ranking that people were
upset about bad comments I mean okay
number two the leftovers that show
sucked with and Sarah Molina also said
I’m sorry what the heck is the leftovers
I’ve never heard of this show how did
that surpass game of effing thrones
several question marks and exclamation
points she she had emphasis hmm so I
would call this show under view
but yes in no way underrated okay
because their critics were about the
leftovers yeah
but under viewed neither of us a see
right so well I don’t want to spoil too
and I’m a TV person but it’s it’s a very
month I don’t like emotional shows okay
like I I have a very close friend that
watches a lot of this is us and I yeah
this is by the way contender for this
list in my opinion I think so too
probably on the MS mojo yeah it’s gonna
be on the MS mojo list for sure but but
I’m not you it’s a very well made show
but I don’t actually like it because I
don’t like emotions very I don’t like
feeling I don’t like feelings well I
like feelings like excitement laughter I
don’t like Oh existential dread and so
dealing with loss which i think is
dealing with loss it’s it’s heavy
it is a heavy show but I recommend it
for those of you that like those heavy
themes you don’t have to be smart like
Rick and Morty but you just got to be
you got to be in for some emotional
stuff like look at Justin right here
first of all gotta love that back but
anyway anyway I gotta fans I’m I’m an
average fan of Justin okay yeah but uh
from what I understand and I’ve seen
clips the performances on the show are
just out of this world cocoon and they
do a great job so those of you who
haven’t seen it and are upset at our
ranking we beg you to give it a solid
chance and then come back and tell us we
were right I know I think that’s
probably why sorry to know it’s funny
but I think that’s probably why we did
put it this high on the list is to
encourage people to give it a chance
right yes which is as these comments
will exemplify it risky but what are you
gonna do
it’s our champ number one is the
Handmaid’s Tale now it’s critical
darling I think audiences liked it
couple of people had some comments I’m
not gonna read them all but the words
piss trash and pretentious crap are
there now you gonna have a hard disagree
with all of these need to budget I need
I can see why this shows a hard sell
like visually you look at a picture
you’re like that looks boring AF yeah I
feel like you need to be in a mood to
watch this yeah absolutely
I mean that mood is to be willing to be
depressed about the future of humanity
or the present honestly yeah you were
saying that this is uh it’s pretty well
yeah I mean we kind of touched on how
later in the list there would be another
show that was very now and very yeah you
know like about the women’s movement
sort of and this is it yeah although
again written a long time ago
yeah like the book was I actually know
Margaret Atwood yeah yeah makes a cameo
in the show yeah sure and there’s
another Margaret Atwood show that got
made this year alias grace that is
fairly oh sweet I think you’re in
Stephen King having the best time yeah
except for the Dark Tower of anyway but
back to the Handmaid’s Tale I was
thinking that her performances are great
we mentioned her name before the show
and I’ve already for Lizabeth loss
Elisabeth Moss who I wasn’t crazy about
as Peggy on Mad Men even though she’s
basically the star of the show yeah I
mean I I like the character of Peggy on
Mad Men yeah I know I I’m kind of
indifferent towards her yeah as a
general rule but she was really good in
this like her narration mixed with a
little subtle ticks on her face I
thought was just fantastic mm-hmm
oh the show really has an oppressive
atmosphere though it’s like that’s the
idea yeah
bogs you down like SNL parodied it and
they hardly touched it
they heard the time like they didn’t
want to make fun of it too much um no
like they didn’t have to yeah oh you
mean like it like it’s almost beyond
parody yeah yeah oh jeez pardon yon you
beyond
very good Emily that’s a Dan that’s
great
any other thoughts I mean what about the
other performances in the show um I was
a little surprised about Yvonne
Strahovski right casting and just
because you didn’t touch chuckling I
didn’t watch Chuck I know her from
Dexter you know her from Mass Effect as
though he’s Mass Effect 2 that’s making
Emily but mostly – um and so like I
didn’t think of her as like this
oppressive boss lady who slapped
around her hand man yeah yeah not to be
a huge bar but I mean she did a great
job
yeah no I I think it’s a great show I I
hope it’s one of these shows
I hope they end at an appropriate time
because I think cuz every show that’s
the the end of this season was the end
of the book yeah exactly
yeah and I just hope it doesn’t jump the
shark too much because it’s it’s really
good as it is and it’s a shame when good
shows jump oh I’m terrible
yeah what do you guys think number one
still I think it’s the most 2017 show on
