helping you seize the season when
holiday gift spiration strikes shop the
globe today hello and welcome to
deconstructed where we take a list that
we’ve already done on WatchMojo and
break it down entry by entry to see why
things placed where they did and have a
little discussion with it today’s
episode is brought to you by PayPal and
we’re discussing the top 10 games of
2017
it’s a good one let’s take a look
all righty lots of fun stuff on this
list it was a good year let’s meet our
panel real quick we have at the far end
we got Andrew and closer to me is Ricky
and Ricky’s jacket yeah yeah
all right gentlemen 2017 good year any
personal favorites right off the bat
yeah
horizon horizon yeah we’ll get to that
one yeah but I progressed we pretty fast
Pub G Bungie yeah oh boy
probably our most contentious endru
entry but we’ll start with number 10 all
right Resident Evil 7 biohazard this one
was kind of an underdog it’s also
probably the oldest game on the list I
believe it came out last January and I
remember playing it at the time and
being like man when we put our game of
the year list together I really hope we
remember this one because it’s really
awesome Andrew you played it right yeah
it because it came out such a long time
ago everybody forgets just how good it
was because they sort of came and went
like the hype train was really big for
the game but it was really really short
and it’s not the kind of game that
everybody could get into yeah I mean
I’ll say this I think that it’s length
definitely affected my enjoyment of it
and I think the general public’s
enjoyment of it or at least it’s lasting
memory because you put is like nine ten
hours to finish so I think that’s why we
probably didn’t place it any higher on
the list but it’s one that I’m I’m
pretty adamant should not be forgotten
it was really good it’s just a lot of
fun I I thought it was gonna be in
outlast situation when I saw it like
where you can’t fight back like ever so
I was very very happy that you could
shoot things in the face and kill things
I like the fact that the past No
people games four five and six were very
action-oriented third-person perspective
yes and this is a departure from that
and it feels more terrifying it’s I
think it’s a step in the right direction
for the Resident Evil series even if you
liked the action stuff I mean I like the
action stuff but I think that this is
like objectively just scarier throwing
you into a first-person perspective
having view kind of vulnerable and
having a limited amount of weapons
focusing on exploration I again the the
length of the game I think is an issue
but going forward if they can make a
longer game a first-person game which
can be scarier have more enemies I think
it’s a good step for Resident people to
take I think one of the things that that
I thought was so amazing about it and it
sort of worn off over time but as we’re
talking I think it it bears mentioning
that like there were a couple of moments
in the game where I couldn’t tell the
difference between scripting and
something that is happens organically
there were a couple like the I think the
fight in the garage is the best part of
the game for sure even though I saw that
horrible opening cutscene like a billion
times because I thought if you talk to
you but there were a few things that
happened in that that I was genuinely
surprised like there are sort of
branching ways that fight can go very
impressive yeah I remember cuz you had
told me about it and then when I got to
that scene it played out differently
yeah for me and I was like oh that was
cool and then I remember we talked about
it afterwards so even though when you’re
playing it it feels like you’re sort of
just playing like a linear heavily
scripted game but like you can no I
you’re not yeah also the best VR game of
the go yeah for sure
probably there’s the only really really
good V art yeah so like this game is
actually a little bit better next up I
believe it’s pronounced coop odd or Cup
head for the layman now this is a game
that I didn’t expect to enjoy because
generally bullet-hell shooters just kind
of stressed me out and I don’t find
myself actually having fun
like you can succeed at it but when you
put like I don’t enjoy the gameplay but
cop had surprised me in that like it’s
not I I’d say it’s not really much
but it’s it’s an impressive feat almost
all round yeah it offers a significant
challenge I mean like you’re gonna die a
lot in this game as I’m sure you know so
it’s rewarding when you actually beat a
boss or level it’s a lot of muscle
memory I feel I feel like you can do it
a hundred times and if you don’t have
the right reaction time you will just
keep dying so we can’t get the parry
yeah yeah exactly but I mean that that’s
part of the charm of the game it is it
encourages you to have those different
playthroughs and keep going and dying
and it might be frustrating but when you
get past that you’re like I just I don’t
think this game should be on the list
really yeah how come I it’s a little bit
– I don’t want to say Miche but it’s
definitely it’s it’s not a game for
everybody and I’m not saying the best
games newer games it should be for
everybody but it’s just there were
better games that came out this year and
this is one of the games that it
challenged a lot of the height for the
game was based around the challenge yeah
and while it’s a genuinely fun game I
don’t think it’s that special I think
the are special it’s a gorgeous looking
game I think it’s one of the best
looking games I will admit that I think
it was like a perfect storm of
popularity I think there was like the
challenge on one side the art style on
another and then the sort of the
backlash around the chant like you know
there was that whole I don’t want to get
into it but there was the whole thing
that one poor guy who sucked at the game
so bad and it became this big
manufactured controversy but so I will
say that a lot of stuff surrounded it
but I still think it it’s a remarkable
achievement to take a genre which has
essentially been dead for 20 years and
make a massive success out of it and the
art style is just it’s self-evident on
its face you look at that and you’re
like holy crap that looks amazing
yeah that’s iconic for here okie-dokie
ok voter finished dying to see new
Colossus I got a great little I got a
great little comment here and that’s all
we’re gonna touch we’re just gonna touch
on the controversy by reading this
comment and that’s gonna be it okay so
Wolfenstein was shit
it was just sjw propaganda um
man I think it had a little bit of it
anyway I’d rather not dive too far
understand what that means there’s been
Wolfenstein game yeah before I can were
saying SJW yeah I know but anyway the
game I was a huge fan of the new order
and I just wanted more shooting out of
the new order now then doom came out of
here or two later and I was kind of
satiated so I admit that the story focus
of Wolfenstein was a not quite what I’m
looking for in the shooter like I find
it’s a bit tough for that game to shift
gears so hard like you’re just you’re
gunning down you’re dumbing down Nazis
constantly and then you pull off into a
corner and BJ will be like and here’s a
second so that being said I think it’s
still commendable how well it weaves
what I would call a pretty mature story
for an immature franchise thoughts
that’s something I never figured out I
mean I played through the first one also
yeah I liked the DLC but I played
through the first one and I really had
like I said I really enjoyed the
shooting but the story which I’ve had
it’s very jarring company topic you’re
shooting and now boom you’re something
not shooting me because a Nazi
head-butted you in the face even though
you just killed all the Nazis behind you
right now we’re doing some story stuff
and there’s just too much of that and I
was hoping this game would fix it
and it didn’t and I still to this day
haven’t figured out if the game is how
self-aware the game is cuz sometimes it
feels very self-aware and silly and
other times it’s trying to be too
serious
and I just I don’t care but I just I
don’t care I just want to shoot stuff
and I really don’t think this game this
game for me was very at this point he
was still a very good game don’t come I
was still very solid shooter and if
you’re into the story that’s fine you
can be into the story but for me
personally I was really disappointed
in this game and I don’t think it should
be able
it’s always been kind of schlocky you
know Mecca Hitler yeah that sort of
thing yeah craziness so if you were to
tell me in 2009 or something that there
were 10 that there was like a new
Wolfenstein coming out that was gonna
weave what kind of like a smarter more
emotional tale I wouldn’t believe you
and I think Wolfenstein is a surprising
success in so much that it succeeds at
that if nothing else plus I really I
love the dual wield mechanics I’m just
I’m such a but the best thing although I
had a friend that told me he didn’t like
it and he said he never dual wielded cuz
it was stupid and I was like no he’s
playing it wrong he’s playing there is a
way to play these games wrong I I will
tell you and that’s that’s playing it
wrong for sure so our next one
Ricky was actually fanboying over just
last week so good yeah he won’t shut up
about yeah yeah I I love this game I
don’t think it should be number seven I
think they should be closer to but
better than breath of the wild better
better than breath of the wild I mean
they share a lot of the same interesting
mechanics and open world I want to talk
about the open world in this game is
absolutely beautiful you know I just
want to explore all of it if the map is
huge
the gameplay is the most fun I’ve had
playing the game
a long time it’s there’s so many
different combinations of weapons you
can use you can go stealth you can go
all-out the machines the design is it’s
incredible what they’ve done with these
like like it’s robot Jurassic Park
meets like the Far Cry meets like Metal
Gear Solid it’s crazy and I couldn’t
recommend it like more to anybody and
the story we came in like a week ago
and Ricky just tried to explain the
whole plot to us that’s what we’re
trying to start working we’re all trying
to put our headphones on we’re like yeah
it’s it’s it’s it’s not something that I
would be justice just by telling you
guys you do need to play but you guys
both have PC so this game is fresh in
your head like you’re only sort of just
picking this up now or only just started
picking it up a couple of weeks ago yeah
do you think that it’s it’s gonna stay
with you oh yeah to justify oh yeah
because I feel like that’s why we only
put it at 7 because like it’s got a lot
of glitz and it’s it’s don’t get me
wrong fantastic game yeah the games of
the year yeah it is but it I just found
it like the sheen kind of wore off after
I put it down if that makes any sense no
I completely get that but I think that
there’s so much to do and so much to
explore and you can I mean the replay
value is also awesome like playing it on
ultra hard and just the challenge that
it offers for somebody who wants to play
the game in a completely different style
from the first playthrough I think that
that adds a lot to like what keeps it
fresh every time I go back to it so
there’s just so much to explore so many
monsters and and and these robots and
the expansion coming out the frozen
wilds is really what just came out
recently is a beautiful addition you
guys tell that he likes it I think I
know what yeah it’s just the worst okay
that’s I think we’ve given this game
enough praise about what okay wait
before we move on
why wouldn’t I I explained why I didn’t
want to put it higher but I think it’s
gonna be our job to justify why things
are slightly up above it yeah
in our next entry near automata I think
here’s the perfect example of a game
where you can have ridiculously horny
art style and still produce an amazing
game that critics will love because you
know people will often say that like
critics will like get hung up on just
like the art design of a character if
they’re like overly sexualized or
something like that and I don’t think
this one’s too over-the-top I mean
people are dragging the new Xenoblade
Chronicles because of some of their
characters but I think what’s beautiful
about your automata is that like the
themes of the story the art style all
and the way the combat works all of that
blends together into a very nice package
it’s a shame the package has a few rough
edges but more so than any game this
year I think the the individual elements
mesh with each other really well well
this is one of those games that I think
I mean we talk about this a lot how as
opposed to movies video games the second
game is often not always but often a
little bit better than the first one
because came as a bit more experimental
tighten it up and then things it’s easy
to tighten up a video game because it’s
less focused on the story then say
movies right and this is a game that I
think a lot of people forget is a sequel
yeah but it’s like a spin-off it is well
it’s because it’s done by a different
it’s done by the same guy
Yoko taro but yeah it’s different
Velveteen that’s right
yeah and sort of the first game was one
of those games it’s very like artistic
yeah and pointed as a game that’s like
Oh games are art look at this game but
in terms of gameplay
it wasn’t very tight and then so giving
it to Platinum Games core just like the
gameplay exactly exactly Studio so they
just made this sort of a similar game in
terms of like story depth and character
depth this game has some of the best
characters of the year these characters
are actually some of the best characters
in gaming this year hard to believe I
know
with the just incredibly tight combat of
a Platinum Games game yeah and that’s
why I would put this game above
something like horizon zero dawn which
is a fantastic adventure game but
everything it does it doesn’t do quite
as well as with this
nobody’s game does less okay you know it
has more it can give more to the story
gives more to the comment give more to
just kind of create a little more
cohesive experience exactly my only
knocks against it I’m not big on
backtracking I don’t know like what’s
funny about open people are always
talking about backtracking but when your
game is completely open world no one
calls it backtracking but when you have
a game with a little bit more linearity
it becomes backtracking which is a shame
uh and I mean these are grapes but
invisible walls dry peanuts and like the
world is beautiful but there’s a lot of
invisible walls also if you’re playing
on PC there’s some the PC version is not
ideal
like I would avoid it on PC I can’t
unless they start patching it and it’s
been eight months so I don’t think
they’re gonna patch it I we didn’t place
it lower on the list because of that I
think it’s more just that it’s still a
little bit rough around the edges but
man you’re talking about sequels that
are often better if there’s a direct
sequel to this I mean it probably won’t
might not have the most gut-wrenching
story like this one but hopefully
because if they can create it just a
slight like more of the same but just
better
that’ll be game of the year whenever
that comes out yeah if tato sticks with
the if he stays on board for another
game it’s I’m really excited to see that
happen there’s divinity original sin to
which is probably my favorite game this
year I I want them to announce number
three so I can keep like Kickstarter
bakit like immediately I was a big fan
of the first one I got you to play the
first one but you never finished it
actually you know what technically I
didn’t finish the first one either but
this one’s better more narration more
fun combos yeah you really you wanna you
went really you wouldn’t know the first
one you went more nuts for this one yeah
this one is just better man for those of
you who are disappointed with triple-a
gaming this year and you like deep
role-playing games I can’t recommend
this enough it’s not perfect though but
I want to hear your thoughts before I
knock it down a few pegs
one of the things that stopped me from
playing the first game will not stop me
but I only play the first like two
chapters or actually whatever hmm was it
wasn’t well it was there was a lot of
backtracking and it was hard to get into
the story yes it didn’t feel very
cinematic and I mean these games don’t
need to feel cinematic all decay to is
one of my favorite games of all time
that’s well for one of the least
cinematic games of all time very similar
to I mean this is clearly drawing
inspiration from those old yes I’m sure
a poor vent and but this one they just
they had more money right a put it into
the right places they you know focused a
lot on the story
without taking away from the depth of
the world yeah you know and that was
really really cool and being able to
like pick the pre-generated characters
and actually have characters in the game
as opposed to just rogue wizard but yeah
like not a lot I I really liked how you
could pick the character you want it to
be not just create them but like that
which is a bold strategy I think but I
mean they cover it up by having the
characters you don’t pick being your
party members so I think but I still
think it’s a very bold strategy also I
thought DM mode is pretty cool like
dungeon master mode yeah yeah I’m try
that very cool it’s fun to cooperate to
like I played with my buddies are the
first one right yeah and like it’s like
just coming up with strategies how to be
the boss I’m like you can be there for
like 20 minutes really 30 minutes and
you’re trying to find the best way to do
it and you die a bunch of times but it I
thought that co-op play is really strong
I feel it’s a really great game for
accidentally killing if you’re the kind
of person who if you haven’t played this
yet if you’re the kind of person who
likes sort of breaking a game or
tricking the game into doing something
that it doesn’t want to do the game is
made to be cheesed exactly this is this
is your game this whole game is about
just finding ways to break the game and
if it’s fantastic so there’s a couple of
things if Nintendo hadn’t released two
games this year and if sorry Minox for
this game are essentially like it just
becomes a bit of a mess at near the end
like
your quest your quest log and journal is
kind of a garbage fire and it’s easier
than in the first one to manage your
party and do all the equipment stuff but
it’s still a bit of a pain like your
whole party is selling goods but if
you’re not if the character with the
high barter skill is not the one
directly talking to the NPC you’ll get
ripped off no yeah so like there’s a lot
it’s it’s a love letter to Dungeons and
Dragons but with all of the the sort of
hard rules that come along with it
that was something we learned we played
we had a D&D campaign going up to long
ago and we sort of learned the lesson of
like make sure the right person is
talking yes right yeah don’t let Dan
talk to anyone basically okay let’s go
with entry number for Mario Odyssey and
Nintendo okay
they you know they’re Mario games
haven’t always been knockouts
I know sunshine kind of divides
audiences but everyone knew this was
gonna be a pretty sweet game and turns
out that it was do we really need to
discuss it anymore I mean Andrew I knew
you were looking forward to a new like
Mario 64 type game yeah exactly I was I
was disappointed with sunshine like
Mario 64 is such a good game and I was
disappointed by sunshine and I was also
a little bit disappointed by the gala
theme so I know I acknowledge there
fantastic acknowledged there fantastic
he’s pulling his punches he’s in America
but they weren’t what I wanted them to
be and Odyssey was a spiritual successor
to mario 64 and that’s what I’ve been
wanting since tonight cuz you didn’t
even like 3d world eh no I picked up 3d
world land I picked up the Wii U one
right I didn’t finish 3d world because I
found cuz that that perspective kind of
makes it hard to to jump around and
figure out where you’re gonna land like
you have to look at your shadow to see
we’re gonna land I mean not if you’re
not terrible but I understand yeah yeah
how keep picking up on that is being
terrible and you’ve been terrible right
did this game is is like awesome
it takes the n64 like everything that
you loved about Mario 64 and it puts it
in like this beautiful
3d world where you can just run around
with the hat mechanic which i think is
really cool being able to take control
of certain enemies and use that to your
advantage and use the environment to
your advantage
I find it’s very like um it almost
reminds me of Zelda games in so much
that it’s a lot a lot of the the more
hidden aspect the more hidden moons that
you’re looking for are locked off by you
finding a creative way to use the
mechanic you know so I thought that was
pretty cool I think that’s a good thing
though I think it’s encouraging players
to play the game in different styles in
different ways and any time you give
players an option to do something it’s
better than just telling them okay you
have to go do this specific thing
keeping it linear so you can you can
explore and you can you can have fun
with the game without necessarily going
straight for the story and saving
Princess Peach you don’t even I’ve never
even paid attention you gotta say
feature yes I know I never even pay
attention and that’s the thing this is
like it seems yeah I skip the cutscenes
galaxy this was because this everyone a
lot of people say that this is like oh
this is the breadth of the world for
Mario and I don’t think it is I think
it’s just it’s it’s a return to form
it’s not turn norm with just more stuff
like it’s a return to form with the
extra stuff that a modern game has yeah
that makes sense not a lot of
microtransactions though no that’s
something that modern games have yes
right always problematic it will be
deals there there’s gonna be deal
secrets but that’s DLCs now acceptable
because there’s a view bigger evil out
here you know so pro persona I think it
might bear mentioning that okay when
you’re doing a games of the year list
the games often span a huge variety of
genres and if you’re Zanna is most
represented in survival horror like
Resident Evil or you know colorful
platformers like Super Mario Odyssey
then that should be your game of the
year and I will understand that that be
so with that in mind I think that like
if you know given a different set of
circumstances maybe if our preferences
were slightly different I think our top
three games or at least this and our
number one could
been the best game of the year I think
it’s amazing that a JRPG that’s in
development for years like I think it
started as a ps3 game managed to find
such mainstream success in 2017 because
JRPGs hardly a genre anymore there are
Japanese RPGs that come out all the time
yeah but it’s as far as mainstream
appeal at least in the West I think it’s
commendable that something like persona
which is not only a JRPG but a deeply
deeply weird Japanese RPG is still being
so talked about here in Western culture
well I think there’s a demand for it I
knew people love our booties and and
anime and anything Japan is kind of like
fetishized and all right but I still
think it’s a barrier of entry like I
still think you know granted there’s
tons of guys who want some waifu’s yeah
for sure
but at the same time yeah I just think
this is it’s a commendable achievement I
wish I had more time to play it yeah
it’s well I think it’s it’s really
accessible because it’s not overly
complicated and even though at least
four layers it on of course exactly it
does a really good job of bringing
things in slowly and the elements are
really weird and zany but they’re easy
to understand yeah because it’s not
trying to get like crazy epic right away
you know and it takes the like the world
building of three and the character
development of four and brings so it
takes the best of three and the best of
four and brings them together with one
game and like classic JRPG combat but
still very fresh and new and I think
it’s an amazing way yes it’s all ish
right yeah exactly I think one of the
things that leads to his success and
this is of the whole series is kind of
grounding it in the real world I think
those real world elements really kind of
help like whether you want to call them
dating simulator things or the whole
thing they have to go to school you got
to go to bed on time etc etc like that’s
what I mean by like targeting the
Democrat yeah exactly it’s like a it’s
literally like a fantasy yeah like that
someone be like you know when I really
want it when I’m in school when I
gotta fight demons all you guys this is
just a distraction so this was
definitely the most contentious entry on
the list
uh up til yesterday we were still
arguing amongst ourselves as to whether
or not this was a good idea the video
has been out the video is out on the
weekend that like excuse me like I’m not
sure when you’re all watching this but
as of filming the our list has been out
for four or five days and people are
upset that we included pub G and people
in our office or upset that we included
pub G because it’s not let me out boys
yeah it’s an alpha yeah
actually it’ll it’ll probably be
released by this time this goes up or
it’s gonna be released in a day or two
yeah well that’s people I mean if you
look at the comments people you know are
like oh you get games uneven oh yeah you
can’t put off again we know yeah we
thought we talked about that we because
we don’t usually put early access games
yeah unless ever if we had it was kind
of like an elephant in the room yeah
yeah exactly we talked about this and we
talked about it a lot and here’s the
thing the game comes at Cana comes out
December 2017 it’s not going on the 2018
game of the year no and we’re gonna have
to talk about it this year no exactly
and in terms of early access games
because this one is out was gonna it’s
gonna have an Xbox launch yeah that put
them on a solid timetable unlike you
know something like days a year star
citizen this game actually has a solid
timetable up they’d like this game has
come out and what we were playing in you
know November and before that is still
essentially a big game yes right and the
game is just so good and so fun and
there’s a reason that it sold 20 million
comments – yeah so even though it’s
really accessed the state that the game
is in as of when we published our top
ten games of year list even we did a
spot Aaron did a spot on the list
exactly it’s that anybody can get into
it that’s what’s that’s what’s great
about it I don’t know if I agree with it
at number two but I do think that the
fact that you can just jump out of a
plane get on the floor like everybody’s
on the same playing field and you know
you’re looking for your different
weapons and the map is getting smaller
and there’s that like it’s pushing you
toward that combat it’s
it’s it’s something that anybody can
just be like okay let me just jump out
of this plane and start playing pub G
and I think that accessibility takes a
little practice with picking stuff up
and knowing we have open opening doors
and don’t pick up the cross boat you
leave that already on the way here today
I was thinking about how am I gonna
justify this because even though we’ve
put it on the list a long time ago we’re
still like fighting for the
justification and I think that’s
probably the hardest entry that we’re
gonna have to talk about today the way I
see it is that it’s a it’s a game that’s
actually just it’s so stripped down to
its core elements while still being
insanely popular and fun because it
really is fun like that I think that’s
one thing that people don’t really bring
up a lot but you know it has the
graphics are not fancy the polish is
non-existent it’s still really rough it
doesn’t run all that well on PCs even if
you have an amazing PC it doesn’t run
that great there’s no fan service or
story or character design to get you
into it
the only thing that made this game
popular is that the game the core
mechanic is just great the core mechanic
works so well that it became the most
popular game on Steam like in a matter
of months which i think is extremely
commendable when you it’s it’s it’s got
no frills it’s like that restaurant that
is only popular not because of its take
or not because of its fancy stuff it’s
just the food is good yeah and it’s easy
to end like you were saying it’s easy to
pick up and play you jump out of an
airplane you land you’re like Oh what do
I do now you start picking stuff up the
stuff you pick up guns and backpacks
yeah that’s it I’m gonna scope I’ll put
my scope oh I’m trying I know I’m shot
and it armor third-level oh yeah one
other thing I was gonna say that I
really think is just that I think is the
most fun when I’m playing is that it is
the best cooperative competitive game to
come around in a while like when we play
overwatch or battlefield yes we
coordinate occasionally but it’s also
super easy yet just it’s also super easy
to just kind of zone out and do your own
favor like the map is flipped like the
match is flowing where it flows and like
you know it’s always on a
relatively linear plane so you can just
show up for the battle and keep dying
and never communicate with your
teammates club G you are in constant
communication with your buds and it’s
like and if you stop communicating the
whole thing breaks down like the second
you stop communicating it breaks down
and it so it necessitates cooperative
play and teamwork in a way that I think
is is hard to match you have to do this
in MOBAs but even in a MOBA it’s easy to
just sort of play your role and zone out
you know because the map is flowing in a
certain way if you’re not cooperating
with your team assuming assuming you’re
playing a team game it’s not gonna be
good you’re gonna have a bad time yeah
it forces you to be active and to think
and again that cooperation between
players is super important because you
want it like these kinds of games that
are like you said these bare bones like
here go and do this yeah but then they
add that entire element where okay you
can do this but you can’t succeed unless
they’re working together I think what is
fantastic about it is this little
balance between really not wanting to
die you care a lot about it it’s very
important you’ve been alive for 45
minutes so dining has a horrible sting
it really you don’t want it to happen
however it’s instantaneous to start a
new game again so this I think and I
think that plays into its popularity the
how important it is to not die and how
much you care about staying alive along
with how easy it is to just do it all
again how easy it is to start again and
that’s all we’ll say because I think
we’ve said enough
okay surprising precisely nobody we have
The Legend of Zelda breath of the wild
year I’d like to start it off with a
comment which will help me segue into my
main point about this Zelda is overrated
anyone who is not high on nostalgia
knows that persona 5 is a much better
game now here’s the thing preference if
you think so persona 5 is a better game
that’s cool I think both of them are as
I was saying they’re both strong
contenders for game of the year so
that’s fine that being said nostalgia I
don’t think it really scratches that
itch that well it’s it doesn’t really
feel like a Zelda game when I’m playing
there aren’t really many dungeons and
there aren’t you know that reliance on
the tools that you use okay yes I know
there’s a kabillion shrines and then
there’s the divine beasts yeah but I
find it really doesn’t feel like a Zelda
game and therefore I don’t think that
nostalgia argument really holds water
you can’t ride nostalgia to late game of
the year either I mean it’s not enough
the game has to be good and this Zelda
game the first open-world Zelda game
it’s it does something that like you
said no other Zelda game has really done
or it doesn’t feel like a Zelda game it
doesn’t hold your hand it throws you out
into this world and you’re you succumb
to the elements and you have to find
your own weapons and they break and
there’s no opening these chests and
getting these like these everything that
you’re used to getting in Zelda games it
really is go out there and make your own
be your own hero you know find ways to
survive you’re subject to the
environment there’s so many ways to
define the solution to a puzzle and so
you’re giving players this incredible
choice which is open the world and I
think that Zelda fans like they
appreciate that but it’s like the
solutions to sort of more I said I want
to say open world problems like dealing
with a camp of mob –lens or something
like that
that I think is the amount that’s where
the creativity truly shines it’s not the
sort of it’s how you deal with the more
organic problems that occur in the game
that I think is a little bit more
impressive it’s just one of those games
that has they create like five or six
systems and then the system’s all work
with each other which is why I think
it’s commendable so it’s not bloated
like I was playing Assassin’s Creed
origins this year too and that game just
bombards you with blow so fast and this
game it doesn’t hold your hand but it
starts you off relatively calmly
there’s more than meets the eye is what
I’d say I wasn’t so impressed with this
game in my first 10 hours I was more
impressed in my 20 30 40 after that
thoughts Andrew I I used to be a big
zelda fan I’m not anymore like the last
of the game I played was before this one
was Twilight Princess and I didn’t even
finish it
right and I remember playing this game
and being like this is a game here yeah
like we’d all kind of already decided it
was gonna be the game of the year unless
something better came out and nothing
better came out so it’s like we if we
started making the list months ago we
would have put this at one and then just
know it yeah man like that’s gonna I
mean okay let’s read another comment
from Andrew cuz this guy’s got your
number
oh man my my Tallis is there a single
WatchMojo list where Zelda didn’t win
how biased can you be long and that’s
from I’m not reading my name you’ll see
yeah okay yeah I know I I mean thanks
for being a fan for a long time it’s not
biased if it’s an amazing game it’s
there it’s a contender for I don’t think
we’re gonna be the only ones to know if
you I don’t think so let’s just say I
think and they deserve come on
commendation for thinking outside the
box because they could have played this
really safe this game would have sold
like it I’m not sure if it would have
been the switch system should sell her
but you could have made just a solid by
the numbers Zelda game and that would
have sold a million copies for sure bad
editor so I commit so I commend how
ambitious it is also after playing this
horizon was a bit ruined for me because
I expected to be able to climb all the
shit you can like it’s I think what is
commendable about this is that it really
takes the take a shot everytime I say
commendable but it takes the open world
idea or label and treats it quite
literally oh yeah really know where you
can’t go yeah there’s no boundaries in
this game
it’s ridiculous oh that’s awesome thanks
I mean against why it’s nothing like it
there’s no wonders all the like it and
it sets the bar super high for the next
is all the game that’s coming out soon
yeah but that’ll be in like 2027 so I
don’t like Metroid now yeah it’s not
it’s not coming back so I wouldn’t worry
about that um any knocks against it now
that we’re talking about it though the
weapon breaking is yeah that’s that’s
probably the old genuinely my theory
about the weapon breaking is that first
of all if nothing broke you would have
so much crap with antenna within ten
hours of play it would just be pages of
sorts so I think there’s that second of
all I think they didn’t want to make
their game about loot it’s about
exploration and the adventure and all
that they didn’t want it to be diablo
where the loot and the building of your
character was the most important aspect
if you so I think the weapon degradation
and the fact that they just explode into
dust after hitting a few people with it
is a grant it’s super in the way but I
think it’s to teach you that loot is not
important the sword you just got is not
important to you you don’t need it and
it’s just like it it teaches you to just
to be playing the game a different way
you’re not hoarding stuff damn like
whispering but that required some
serious of auditing oh yeah oh yeah I
hate it and like fighting the gamers
instinct yeah you’re like oh you
shouldn’t see the way I play Skyrim like
Skyrim I’ve just like I have a house
where I just dump all my crap because
I’m just a hoarder in those pathetic
AG’s and I want to do that and it’s
annoying when you get something and
you’re like this is sweet breaks yeah it
forces you it forces you to explore that
beautiful environment that they built
for you with no boundaries I mean that’s
that’s the whole point it’s always
pushing toward that’s yeah exactly and
it doesn’t want you to get bogged down
no in the involute the other thing I’d
say is that like I wasn’t so big on the
divine beasts on the the actual big
dungeons that are not shrines
I think the mechanic is cool how you can
always like rotate it and move the
environment yeah to solve the puzzle
that would have been cool for a couple
of done I wanted a few tradition
Zelda dungeons and I would have been
fine if like each one focused on one of
the powers that you had like your Magni
SACEUR the cryo sixes yeah but that’s
kind of a perfect world thing and you
know what maybe if they’d taken my
advice on that game wouldn’t have been
such a success I don’t work at it Tendo

episode is brought to you by PayPal and
we’re discussing the top 10 games of
2017
it’s a good one let’s take a look
all righty lots of fun stuff on this
list it was a good year let’s meet our
panel real quick we have at the far end
we got Andrew and closer to me is Ricky
and Ricky’s jacket yeah yeah
all right gentlemen 2017 good year any
personal favorites right off the bat
yeah
horizon horizon yeah we’ll get to that
one yeah but I progressed we pretty fast
Pub G Bungie yeah oh boy
probably our most contentious endru
entry but we’ll start with number 10 all
right Resident Evil 7 biohazard this one
was kind of an underdog it’s also
probably the oldest game on the list I
believe it came out last January and I
remember playing it at the time and
being like man when we put our game of
the year list together I really hope we
remember this one because it’s really
awesome Andrew you played it right yeah
it because it came out such a long time
ago everybody forgets just how good it
was because they sort of came and went
like the hype train was really big for
the game but it was really really short
and it’s not the kind of game that
everybody could get into yeah I mean
I’ll say this I think that it’s length
definitely affected my enjoyment of it
and I think the general public’s
enjoyment of it or at least it’s lasting
memory because you put is like nine ten
hours to finish so I think that’s why we
probably didn’t place it any higher on
the list but it’s one that I’m I’m
pretty adamant should not be forgotten
it was really good it’s just a lot of
fun I I thought it was gonna be in
outlast situation when I saw it like
where you can’t fight back like ever so
I was very very happy that you could
shoot things in the face and kill things
I like the fact that the past No
people games four five and six were very
action-oriented third-person perspective
yes and this is a departure from that
and it feels more terrifying it’s I
think it’s a step in the right direction
for the Resident Evil series even if you
liked the action stuff I mean I like the
action stuff but I think that this is
like objectively just scarier throwing
you into a first-person perspective
having view kind of vulnerable and
having a limited amount of weapons
focusing on exploration I again the the
length of the game I think is an issue
but going forward if they can make a
longer game a first-person game which
can be scarier have more enemies I think
it’s a good step for Resident people to
take I think one of the things that that
I thought was so amazing about it and it
sort of worn off over time but as we’re
talking I think it it bears mentioning
that like there were a couple of moments
in the game where I couldn’t tell the
difference between scripting and
something that is happens organically
there were a couple like the I think the
fight in the garage is the best part of
the game for sure even though I saw that
horrible opening cutscene like a billion
times because I thought if you talk to
you but there were a few things that
happened in that that I was genuinely
surprised like there are sort of
branching ways that fight can go very
impressive yeah I remember cuz you had
told me about it and then when I got to
that scene it played out differently
yeah for me and I was like oh that was
cool and then I remember we talked about
it afterwards so even though when you’re
playing it it feels like you’re sort of
just playing like a linear heavily
scripted game but like you can no I
you’re not yeah also the best VR game of
the go yeah for sure
probably there’s the only really really
good V art yeah so like this game is
actually a little bit better next up I
believe it’s pronounced coop odd or Cup
head for the layman now this is a game
that I didn’t expect to enjoy because
generally bullet-hell shooters just kind
of stressed me out and I don’t find
myself actually having fun
like you can succeed at it but when you
put like I don’t enjoy the gameplay but
cop had surprised me in that like it’s
not I I’d say it’s not really much
but it’s it’s an impressive feat almost
all round yeah it offers a significant
challenge I mean like you’re gonna die a
lot in this game as I’m sure you know so
it’s rewarding when you actually beat a
boss or level it’s a lot of muscle
memory I feel I feel like you can do it
a hundred times and if you don’t have
the right reaction time you will just
keep dying so we can’t get the parry
yeah yeah exactly but I mean that that’s
part of the charm of the game it is it
encourages you to have those different
playthroughs and keep going and dying
and it might be frustrating but when you
get past that you’re like I just I don’t
think this game should be on the list
really yeah how come I it’s a little bit
– I don’t want to say Miche but it’s
definitely it’s it’s not a game for
everybody and I’m not saying the best
games newer games it should be for
everybody but it’s just there were
better games that came out this year and
this is one of the games that it
challenged a lot of the height for the
game was based around the challenge yeah
and while it’s a genuinely fun game I
don’t think it’s that special I think
the are special it’s a gorgeous looking
game I think it’s one of the best
looking games I will admit that I think
it was like a perfect storm of
popularity I think there was like the
challenge on one side the art style on
another and then the sort of the
backlash around the chant like you know
there was that whole I don’t want to get
into it but there was the whole thing
that one poor guy who sucked at the game
so bad and it became this big
manufactured controversy but so I will
say that a lot of stuff surrounded it
but I still think it it’s a remarkable
achievement to take a genre which has
essentially been dead for 20 years and
make a massive success out of it and the
art style is just it’s self-evident on
its face you look at that and you’re
like holy crap that looks amazing
yeah that’s iconic for here okie-dokie
ok voter finished dying to see new
Colossus I got a great little I got a
great little comment here and that’s all
we’re gonna touch we’re just gonna touch
on the controversy by reading this
comment and that’s gonna be it okay so
Wolfenstein was shit
it was just sjw propaganda um
man I think it had a little bit of it
anyway I’d rather not dive too far
understand what that means there’s been
Wolfenstein game yeah before I can were
saying SJW yeah I know but anyway the
game I was a huge fan of the new order
and I just wanted more shooting out of
the new order now then doom came out of
here or two later and I was kind of
satiated so I admit that the story focus
of Wolfenstein was a not quite what I’m
looking for in the shooter like I find
it’s a bit tough for that game to shift
gears so hard like you’re just you’re
gunning down you’re dumbing down Nazis
constantly and then you pull off into a
corner and BJ will be like and here’s a
second so that being said I think it’s
still commendable how well it weaves
what I would call a pretty mature story
for an immature franchise thoughts
that’s something I never figured out I
mean I played through the first one also
yeah I liked the DLC but I played
through the first one and I really had
like I said I really enjoyed the
shooting but the story which I’ve had
it’s very jarring company topic you’re
shooting and now boom you’re something
not shooting me because a Nazi
head-butted you in the face even though
you just killed all the Nazis behind you
right now we’re doing some story stuff
and there’s just too much of that and I
was hoping this game would fix it
and it didn’t and I still to this day
haven’t figured out if the game is how
self-aware the game is cuz sometimes it
feels very self-aware and silly and
other times it’s trying to be too
serious
and I just I don’t care but I just I
don’t care I just want to shoot stuff
and I really don’t think this game this
game for me was very at this point he
was still a very good game don’t come I
was still very solid shooter and if
you’re into the story that’s fine you
can be into the story but for me
personally I was really disappointed
in this game and I don’t think it should
be able
it’s always been kind of schlocky you
know Mecca Hitler yeah that sort of
thing yeah craziness so if you were to
tell me in 2009 or something that there
were 10 that there was like a new
Wolfenstein coming out that was gonna
weave what kind of like a smarter more
emotional tale I wouldn’t believe you
and I think Wolfenstein is a surprising
success in so much that it succeeds at
that if nothing else plus I really I
love the dual wield mechanics I’m just
I’m such a but the best thing although I
had a friend that told me he didn’t like
it and he said he never dual wielded cuz
it was stupid and I was like no he’s
playing it wrong he’s playing there is a
way to play these games wrong I I will
tell you and that’s that’s playing it
wrong for sure so our next one
Ricky was actually fanboying over just
last week so good yeah he won’t shut up
about yeah yeah I I love this game I
don’t think it should be number seven I
think they should be closer to but
better than breath of the wild better
better than breath of the wild I mean
they share a lot of the same interesting
mechanics and open world I want to talk
about the open world in this game is
absolutely beautiful you know I just
want to explore all of it if the map is
huge
the gameplay is the most fun I’ve had
playing the game
a long time it’s there’s so many
different combinations of weapons you
can use you can go stealth you can go
all-out the machines the design is it’s
incredible what they’ve done with these
like like it’s robot Jurassic Park
meets like the Far Cry meets like Metal
Gear Solid it’s crazy and I couldn’t
recommend it like more to anybody and
the story we came in like a week ago
and Ricky just tried to explain the
whole plot to us that’s what we’re
trying to start working we’re all trying
to put our headphones on we’re like yeah
it’s it’s it’s it’s not something that I
would be justice just by telling you
guys you do need to play but you guys
both have PC so this game is fresh in
your head like you’re only sort of just
picking this up now or only just started
picking it up a couple of weeks ago yeah
do you think that it’s it’s gonna stay
with you oh yeah to justify oh yeah
because I feel like that’s why we only
put it at 7 because like it’s got a lot
of glitz and it’s it’s don’t get me
wrong fantastic game yeah the games of
the year yeah it is but it I just found
it like the sheen kind of wore off after
I put it down if that makes any sense no
I completely get that but I think that
there’s so much to do and so much to
explore and you can I mean the replay
value is also awesome like playing it on
ultra hard and just the challenge that
it offers for somebody who wants to play
the game in a completely different style
from the first playthrough I think that
that adds a lot to like what keeps it
fresh every time I go back to it so
there’s just so much to explore so many
monsters and and and these robots and
the expansion coming out the frozen
wilds is really what just came out
recently is a beautiful addition you
guys tell that he likes it I think I
know what yeah it’s just the worst okay
that’s I think we’ve given this game
enough praise about what okay wait
before we move on
why wouldn’t I I explained why I didn’t
want to put it higher but I think it’s
gonna be our job to justify why things
are slightly up above it yeah
in our next entry near automata I think
here’s the perfect example of a game
where you can have ridiculously horny
art style and still produce an amazing
game that critics will love because you
know people will often say that like
critics will like get hung up on just
like the art design of a character if
they’re like overly sexualized or
something like that and I don’t think
this one’s too over-the-top I mean
people are dragging the new Xenoblade
Chronicles because of some of their
characters but I think what’s beautiful
about your automata is that like the
themes of the story the art style all
and the way the combat works all of that
blends together into a very nice package
it’s a shame the package has a few rough
edges but more so than any game this
year I think the the individual elements
mesh with each other really well well
this is one of those games that I think
I mean we talk about this a lot how as
opposed to movies video games the second
game is often not always but often a
little bit better than the first one
because came as a bit more experimental
tighten it up and then things it’s easy
to tighten up a video game because it’s
less focused on the story then say
movies right and this is a game that I
think a lot of people forget is a sequel
yeah but it’s like a spin-off it is well
it’s because it’s done by a different
it’s done by the same guy
Yoko taro but yeah it’s different
Velveteen that’s right
yeah and sort of the first game was one
of those games it’s very like artistic
yeah and pointed as a game that’s like
Oh games are art look at this game but
in terms of gameplay
it wasn’t very tight and then so giving
it to Platinum Games core just like the
gameplay exactly exactly Studio so they
just made this sort of a similar game in
terms of like story depth and character
depth this game has some of the best
characters of the year these characters
are actually some of the best characters
in gaming this year hard to believe I
know
with the just incredibly tight combat of
a Platinum Games game yeah and that’s
why I would put this game above
something like horizon zero dawn which
is a fantastic adventure game but
everything it does it doesn’t do quite
as well as with this
nobody’s game does less okay you know it
has more it can give more to the story
gives more to the comment give more to
just kind of create a little more
cohesive experience exactly my only
knocks against it I’m not big on
backtracking I don’t know like what’s
funny about open people are always
talking about backtracking but when your
game is completely open world no one
calls it backtracking but when you have
a game with a little bit more linearity
it becomes backtracking which is a shame
uh and I mean these are grapes but
invisible walls dry peanuts and like the
world is beautiful but there’s a lot of
invisible walls also if you’re playing
on PC there’s some the PC version is not
ideal
like I would avoid it on PC I can’t
unless they start patching it and it’s
been eight months so I don’t think
they’re gonna patch it I we didn’t place
it lower on the list because of that I
think it’s more just that it’s still a
little bit rough around the edges but
man you’re talking about sequels that
are often better if there’s a direct
sequel to this I mean it probably won’t
might not have the most gut-wrenching
story like this one but hopefully
because if they can create it just a
slight like more of the same but just
better
that’ll be game of the year whenever
that comes out yeah if tato sticks with
the if he stays on board for another
game it’s I’m really excited to see that
happen there’s divinity original sin to
which is probably my favorite game this
year I I want them to announce number
three so I can keep like Kickstarter
bakit like immediately I was a big fan
of the first one I got you to play the
first one but you never finished it
actually you know what technically I
didn’t finish the first one either but
this one’s better more narration more
fun combos yeah you really you wanna you
went really you wouldn’t know the first
one you went more nuts for this one yeah
this one is just better man for those of
you who are disappointed with triple-a
gaming this year and you like deep
role-playing games I can’t recommend
this enough it’s not perfect though but
I want to hear your thoughts before I
knock it down a few pegs
one of the things that stopped me from
playing the first game will not stop me
but I only play the first like two
chapters or actually whatever hmm was it
wasn’t well it was there was a lot of
backtracking and it was hard to get into
the story yes it didn’t feel very
cinematic and I mean these games don’t
need to feel cinematic all decay to is
one of my favorite games of all time
that’s well for one of the least
cinematic games of all time very similar
to I mean this is clearly drawing
inspiration from those old yes I’m sure
a poor vent and but this one they just
they had more money right a put it into
the right places they you know focused a
lot on the story
without taking away from the depth of
the world yeah you know and that was
really really cool and being able to
like pick the pre-generated characters
and actually have characters in the game
as opposed to just rogue wizard but yeah
like not a lot I I really liked how you
could pick the character you want it to
be not just create them but like that
which is a bold strategy I think but I
mean they cover it up by having the
characters you don’t pick being your
party members so I think but I still
think it’s a very bold strategy also I
thought DM mode is pretty cool like
dungeon master mode yeah yeah I’m try
that very cool it’s fun to cooperate to
like I played with my buddies are the
first one right yeah and like it’s like
just coming up with strategies how to be
the boss I’m like you can be there for
like 20 minutes really 30 minutes and
you’re trying to find the best way to do
it and you die a bunch of times but it I
thought that co-op play is really strong
I feel it’s a really great game for
accidentally killing if you’re the kind
of person who if you haven’t played this
yet if you’re the kind of person who
likes sort of breaking a game or
tricking the game into doing something
that it doesn’t want to do the game is
made to be cheesed exactly this is this
is your game this whole game is about
just finding ways to break the game and
if it’s fantastic so there’s a couple of
things if Nintendo hadn’t released two
games this year and if sorry Minox for
this game are essentially like it just
becomes a bit of a mess at near the end
like
your quest your quest log and journal is
kind of a garbage fire and it’s easier
than in the first one to manage your
party and do all the equipment stuff but
it’s still a bit of a pain like your
whole party is selling goods but if
you’re not if the character with the
high barter skill is not the one
directly talking to the NPC you’ll get
ripped off no yeah so like there’s a lot
it’s it’s a love letter to Dungeons and
Dragons but with all of the the sort of
hard rules that come along with it
that was something we learned we played
we had a D&D campaign going up to long
ago and we sort of learned the lesson of
like make sure the right person is
talking yes right yeah don’t let Dan
talk to anyone basically okay let’s go
with entry number for Mario Odyssey and
Nintendo okay
they you know they’re Mario games
haven’t always been knockouts
I know sunshine kind of divides
audiences but everyone knew this was
gonna be a pretty sweet game and turns
out that it was do we really need to
discuss it anymore I mean Andrew I knew
you were looking forward to a new like
Mario 64 type game yeah exactly I was I
was disappointed with sunshine like
Mario 64 is such a good game and I was
disappointed by sunshine and I was also
a little bit disappointed by the gala
theme so I know I acknowledge there
fantastic acknowledged there fantastic
he’s pulling his punches he’s in America
but they weren’t what I wanted them to
be and Odyssey was a spiritual successor
to mario 64 and that’s what I’ve been
wanting since tonight cuz you didn’t
even like 3d world eh no I picked up 3d
world land I picked up the Wii U one
right I didn’t finish 3d world because I
found cuz that that perspective kind of
makes it hard to to jump around and
figure out where you’re gonna land like
you have to look at your shadow to see
we’re gonna land I mean not if you’re
not terrible but I understand yeah yeah
how keep picking up on that is being
terrible and you’ve been terrible right
did this game is is like awesome
it takes the n64 like everything that
you loved about Mario 64 and it puts it
in like this beautiful
3d world where you can just run around
with the hat mechanic which i think is
really cool being able to take control
of certain enemies and use that to your
advantage and use the environment to
your advantage
I find it’s very like um it almost
reminds me of Zelda games in so much
that it’s a lot a lot of the the more
hidden aspect the more hidden moons that
you’re looking for are locked off by you
finding a creative way to use the
mechanic you know so I thought that was
pretty cool I think that’s a good thing
though I think it’s encouraging players
to play the game in different styles in
different ways and any time you give
players an option to do something it’s
better than just telling them okay you
have to go do this specific thing
keeping it linear so you can you can
explore and you can you can have fun
with the game without necessarily going
straight for the story and saving
Princess Peach you don’t even I’ve never
even paid attention you gotta say
feature yes I know I never even pay
attention and that’s the thing this is
like it seems yeah I skip the cutscenes
galaxy this was because this everyone a
lot of people say that this is like oh
this is the breadth of the world for
Mario and I don’t think it is I think
it’s just it’s it’s a return to form
it’s not turn norm with just more stuff
like it’s a return to form with the
extra stuff that a modern game has yeah
that makes sense not a lot of
microtransactions though no that’s
something that modern games have yes
right always problematic it will be
deals there there’s gonna be deal
secrets but that’s DLCs now acceptable
because there’s a view bigger evil out
here you know so pro persona I think it
might bear mentioning that okay when
you’re doing a games of the year list
the games often span a huge variety of
genres and if you’re Zanna is most
represented in survival horror like
Resident Evil or you know colorful
platformers like Super Mario Odyssey
then that should be your game of the
year and I will understand that that be
so with that in mind I think that like
if you know given a different set of
circumstances maybe if our preferences
were slightly different I think our top
three games or at least this and our
number one could
been the best game of the year I think
it’s amazing that a JRPG that’s in
development for years like I think it
started as a ps3 game managed to find
such mainstream success in 2017 because
JRPGs hardly a genre anymore there are
Japanese RPGs that come out all the time
yeah but it’s as far as mainstream
appeal at least in the West I think it’s
commendable that something like persona
which is not only a JRPG but a deeply
deeply weird Japanese RPG is still being
so talked about here in Western culture
well I think there’s a demand for it I
knew people love our booties and and
anime and anything Japan is kind of like
fetishized and all right but I still
think it’s a barrier of entry like I
still think you know granted there’s
tons of guys who want some waifu’s yeah
for sure
but at the same time yeah I just think
this is it’s a commendable achievement I
wish I had more time to play it yeah
it’s well I think it’s it’s really
accessible because it’s not overly
complicated and even though at least
four layers it on of course exactly it
does a really good job of bringing
things in slowly and the elements are
really weird and zany but they’re easy
to understand yeah because it’s not
trying to get like crazy epic right away
you know and it takes the like the world
building of three and the character
development of four and brings so it
takes the best of three and the best of
four and brings them together with one
game and like classic JRPG combat but
still very fresh and new and I think
it’s an amazing way yes it’s all ish
right yeah exactly I think one of the
things that leads to his success and
this is of the whole series is kind of
grounding it in the real world I think
those real world elements really kind of
help like whether you want to call them
dating simulator things or the whole
thing they have to go to school you got
to go to bed on time etc etc like that’s
what I mean by like targeting the
Democrat yeah exactly it’s like a it’s
literally like a fantasy yeah like that
someone be like you know when I really
want it when I’m in school when I
gotta fight demons all you guys this is
just a distraction so this was
definitely the most contentious entry on
the list
uh up til yesterday we were still
arguing amongst ourselves as to whether
or not this was a good idea the video
has been out the video is out on the
weekend that like excuse me like I’m not
sure when you’re all watching this but
as of filming the our list has been out
for four or five days and people are
upset that we included pub G and people
in our office or upset that we included
pub G because it’s not let me out boys
yeah it’s an alpha yeah
actually it’ll it’ll probably be
released by this time this goes up or
it’s gonna be released in a day or two
yeah well that’s people I mean if you
look at the comments people you know are
like oh you get games uneven oh yeah you
can’t put off again we know yeah we
thought we talked about that we because
we don’t usually put early access games
yeah unless ever if we had it was kind
of like an elephant in the room yeah
yeah exactly we talked about this and we
talked about it a lot and here’s the
thing the game comes at Cana comes out
December 2017 it’s not going on the 2018
game of the year no and we’re gonna have
to talk about it this year no exactly
and in terms of early access games
because this one is out was gonna it’s
gonna have an Xbox launch yeah that put
them on a solid timetable unlike you
know something like days a year star
citizen this game actually has a solid
timetable up they’d like this game has
come out and what we were playing in you
know November and before that is still
essentially a big game yes right and the
game is just so good and so fun and
there’s a reason that it sold 20 million
comments – yeah so even though it’s
really accessed the state that the game
is in as of when we published our top
ten games of year list even we did a
spot Aaron did a spot on the list
exactly it’s that anybody can get into
it that’s what’s that’s what’s great
about it I don’t know if I agree with it
at number two but I do think that the
fact that you can just jump out of a
plane get on the floor like everybody’s
on the same playing field and you know
you’re looking for your different
weapons and the map is getting smaller
and there’s that like it’s pushing you
toward that combat it’s
it’s it’s something that anybody can
just be like okay let me just jump out
of this plane and start playing pub G
and I think that accessibility takes a
little practice with picking stuff up
and knowing we have open opening doors
and don’t pick up the cross boat you
leave that already on the way here today
I was thinking about how am I gonna
justify this because even though we’ve
put it on the list a long time ago we’re
still like fighting for the
justification and I think that’s
probably the hardest entry that we’re
gonna have to talk about today the way I
see it is that it’s a it’s a game that’s
actually just it’s so stripped down to
its core elements while still being
insanely popular and fun because it
really is fun like that I think that’s
one thing that people don’t really bring
up a lot but you know it has the
graphics are not fancy the polish is
non-existent it’s still really rough it
doesn’t run all that well on PCs even if
you have an amazing PC it doesn’t run
that great there’s no fan service or
story or character design to get you
into it
the only thing that made this game
popular is that the game the core
mechanic is just great the core mechanic
works so well that it became the most
popular game on Steam like in a matter
of months which i think is extremely
commendable when you it’s it’s it’s got
no frills it’s like that restaurant that
is only popular not because of its take
or not because of its fancy stuff it’s
just the food is good yeah and it’s easy
to end like you were saying it’s easy to
pick up and play you jump out of an
airplane you land you’re like Oh what do
I do now you start picking stuff up the
stuff you pick up guns and backpacks
yeah that’s it I’m gonna scope I’ll put
my scope oh I’m trying I know I’m shot
and it armor third-level oh yeah one
other thing I was gonna say that I
really think is just that I think is the
most fun when I’m playing is that it is
the best cooperative competitive game to
come around in a while like when we play
overwatch or battlefield yes we
coordinate occasionally but it’s also
super easy yet just it’s also super easy
to just kind of zone out and do your own
favor like the map is flipped like the
match is flowing where it flows and like
you know it’s always on a
relatively linear plane so you can just
show up for the battle and keep dying
and never communicate with your
teammates club G you are in constant
communication with your buds and it’s
like and if you stop communicating the
whole thing breaks down like the second
you stop communicating it breaks down
and it so it necessitates cooperative
play and teamwork in a way that I think
is is hard to match you have to do this
in MOBAs but even in a MOBA it’s easy to
just sort of play your role and zone out
you know because the map is flowing in a
certain way if you’re not cooperating
with your team assuming assuming you’re
playing a team game it’s not gonna be
good you’re gonna have a bad time yeah
it forces you to be active and to think
and again that cooperation between
players is super important because you
want it like these kinds of games that
are like you said these bare bones like
here go and do this yeah but then they
add that entire element where okay you
can do this but you can’t succeed unless
they’re working together I think what is
fantastic about it is this little
balance between really not wanting to
die you care a lot about it it’s very
important you’ve been alive for 45
minutes so dining has a horrible sting
it really you don’t want it to happen
however it’s instantaneous to start a
new game again so this I think and I
think that plays into its popularity the
how important it is to not die and how
much you care about staying alive along
with how easy it is to just do it all
again how easy it is to start again and
that’s all we’ll say because I think
we’ve said enough
okay surprising precisely nobody we have
The Legend of Zelda breath of the wild
year I’d like to start it off with a
comment which will help me segue into my
main point about this Zelda is overrated
anyone who is not high on nostalgia
knows that persona 5 is a much better
game now here’s the thing preference if
you think so persona 5 is a better game
that’s cool I think both of them are as
I was saying they’re both strong
contenders for game of the year so
that’s fine that being said nostalgia I
don’t think it really scratches that
itch that well it’s it doesn’t really
feel like a Zelda game when I’m playing
there aren’t really many dungeons and
there aren’t you know that reliance on
the tools that you use okay yes I know
there’s a kabillion shrines and then
there’s the divine beasts yeah but I
find it really doesn’t feel like a Zelda
game and therefore I don’t think that
nostalgia argument really holds water
you can’t ride nostalgia to late game of
the year either I mean it’s not enough
the game has to be good and this Zelda
game the first open-world Zelda game
it’s it does something that like you
said no other Zelda game has really done
or it doesn’t feel like a Zelda game it
doesn’t hold your hand it throws you out
into this world and you’re you succumb
to the elements and you have to find
your own weapons and they break and
there’s no opening these chests and
getting these like these everything that
you’re used to getting in Zelda games it
really is go out there and make your own
be your own hero you know find ways to
survive you’re subject to the
environment there’s so many ways to
define the solution to a puzzle and so
you’re giving players this incredible
choice which is open the world and I
think that Zelda fans like they
appreciate that but it’s like the
solutions to sort of more I said I want
to say open world problems like dealing
with a camp of mob –lens or something
like that
that I think is the amount that’s where
the creativity truly shines it’s not the
sort of it’s how you deal with the more
organic problems that occur in the game
that I think is a little bit more
impressive it’s just one of those games
that has they create like five or six
systems and then the system’s all work
with each other which is why I think
it’s commendable so it’s not bloated
like I was playing Assassin’s Creed
origins this year too and that game just
bombards you with blow so fast and this
game it doesn’t hold your hand but it
starts you off relatively calmly
there’s more than meets the eye is what
I’d say I wasn’t so impressed with this
game in my first 10 hours I was more
impressed in my 20 30 40 after that
thoughts Andrew I I used to be a big
zelda fan I’m not anymore like the last
of the game I played was before this one
was Twilight Princess and I didn’t even
finish it
right and I remember playing this game
and being like this is a game here yeah
like we’d all kind of already decided it
was gonna be the game of the year unless
something better came out and nothing
better came out so it’s like we if we
started making the list months ago we
would have put this at one and then just
know it yeah man like that’s gonna I
mean okay let’s read another comment
from Andrew cuz this guy’s got your
number
oh man my my Tallis is there a single
WatchMojo list where Zelda didn’t win
how biased can you be long and that’s
from I’m not reading my name you’ll see
yeah okay yeah I know I I mean thanks
for being a fan for a long time it’s not
biased if it’s an amazing game it’s
there it’s a contender for I don’t think
we’re gonna be the only ones to know if
you I don’t think so let’s just say I
think and they deserve come on
commendation for thinking outside the
box because they could have played this
really safe this game would have sold
like it I’m not sure if it would have
been the switch system should sell her
but you could have made just a solid by
the numbers Zelda game and that would
have sold a million copies for sure bad
editor so I commit so I commend how
ambitious it is also after playing this
horizon was a bit ruined for me because
I expected to be able to climb all the
shit you can like it’s I think what is
commendable about this is that it really
takes the take a shot everytime I say
commendable but it takes the open world
idea or label and treats it quite
literally oh yeah really know where you
can’t go yeah there’s no boundaries in
this game
it’s ridiculous oh that’s awesome thanks
I mean against why it’s nothing like it
there’s no wonders all the like it and
it sets the bar super high for the next
is all the game that’s coming out soon
yeah but that’ll be in like 2027 so I
don’t like Metroid now yeah it’s not
it’s not coming back so I wouldn’t worry
about that um any knocks against it now
that we’re talking about it though the
weapon breaking is yeah that’s that’s
probably the old genuinely my theory
about the weapon breaking is that first
of all if nothing broke you would have
so much crap with antenna within ten
hours of play it would just be pages of
sorts so I think there’s that second of
all I think they didn’t want to make
their game about loot it’s about
exploration and the adventure and all
that they didn’t want it to be diablo
where the loot and the building of your
character was the most important aspect
if you so I think the weapon degradation
and the fact that they just explode into
dust after hitting a few people with it
is a grant it’s super in the way but I
think it’s to teach you that loot is not
important the sword you just got is not
important to you you don’t need it and
it’s just like it it teaches you to just
to be playing the game a different way
you’re not hoarding stuff damn like
whispering but that required some
serious of auditing oh yeah oh yeah I
hate it and like fighting the gamers
instinct yeah you’re like oh you
shouldn’t see the way I play Skyrim like
Skyrim I’ve just like I have a house
where I just dump all my crap because
I’m just a hoarder in those pathetic
AG’s and I want to do that and it’s
annoying when you get something and
you’re like this is sweet breaks yeah it
forces you it forces you to explore that
beautiful environment that they built
for you with no boundaries I mean that’s
that’s the whole point it’s always
pushing toward that’s yeah exactly and
it doesn’t want you to get bogged down
no in the involute the other thing I’d
say is that like I wasn’t so big on the
divine beasts on the the actual big
dungeons that are not shrines
I think the mechanic is cool how you can
always like rotate it and move the
environment yeah to solve the puzzle
that would have been cool for a couple
of done I wanted a few tradition
Zelda dungeons and I would have been
fine if like each one focused on one of
the powers that you had like your Magni
SACEUR the cryo sixes yeah but that’s
kind of a perfect world thing and you
know what maybe if they’d taken my
advice on that game wouldn’t have been
such a success I don’t work at it Tendo
