Narcissism | Bashar Zaidat | TEDxMaumeeValleyCountryDaySchool

Ptolemy’s a Greek astronomer oh well
almost 2000 years ago he outlined the
geocentric model of the universe
he stated that our solar system revolves
around the earth over a thousand years
later
Copernicus stated that our solar system
revolved around the Sun but what does
the universe truly revolve around the
answer is obvious our selves humans are
narcissistic and we all know that
Millennials are the most narcissistic
right I mean we get awards just for
participating and we’re all obsessed
with social media we’re constantly
updating our statuses and taken
countless selfies from this picture
alone you would think that we have
become extremely self-centered but
that’s not actually the case according
to a 2010 Michigan State University
study there hasn’t been a meaningful
change in the narcissism or egotism of
high-school students since 1976 and this
isn’t too hard to explain it’s true that
with the increased use of technology
came individualized social media but it
also introduced a way to make perfect
images using Photoshop sure our
individual pictures may look good but
they’ll never look as good as a model
with a team of digital and makeup
artists this same study also found that
found that the reason for this is
because of the increasing rates of self
deprecation and depression in
adolescence over the same time period
now would you believe me if I told you
that the problem is that we aren’t
narcissistic enough teenagers are
depressed because we’re constantly
chasing a standard that we can never
reach and the solution is narcissism
although narcissism usually holds a
negative connotation
we must broaden our view and look at it
more holistically now being completely
narcissistic can be detrimental but
adopting certain artistic traits can be
surprisingly beneficial w keith campbell
a psychology professor from the
university of georgia and author of the
book the narcissism epidemic
sláinte our narcissism lies on a scale
being at the top of the scale is almost
always a bad thing
but he calls the lower levels a tool in
our toolbox that we can use to nail that
job interview pick someone up at the bar
or win that leadership position at work
he explains how narcissism can help us
we just need to realize what so let’s
take a good look at ourselves and admire
some of the benefits of narcissism
next you will slightly inflate our heads
or we realized why adolescent
specifically need to adopt certain are
statistic traits and finally we will
learn to love ourselves by discovering
how to apply narcissism to its greatest
effect now I know what you’re all
thinking someone the smart perfect funny
attractive and humble doing a speech on
narcissism well that seems fitting but
the truth is that narcissism can
actually help us lead happier and
healthier lives five studies done by
professor cytokines of the University of
Southampton in 2004 found that healthy
narcissism which will define for the
purposes of this speech as about
one-eighth of the narcissism that the
Kardashians have as being correlated
with good psychological health
they found that leads to less sadness
and depression lower levels of
loneliness better well-being and that it
decreases anxiety now the studies showed
these weren’t short-term or long-term
effects rather daily in dispositional
it’s truly simple narcissists are
happier people so let me take you back
to a time where narcissism helped me the
most first great
I distinctly remember running the
opposite direction while playing a game
of soccer and finding no resistance I
scored a goal my team was furious but I
had only one thought in my mind I’m the
next Ronaldo for all you full-blooded
Americans who haven’t accepted that
soccers the world’s largest sport we’re
not though some was amazing important
and more talented than anyone else
around him anyway I didn’t love my
teammates affect me at all and I spent
the rest of my elementary school life
living out my soccer fantasy in fact
this experience motivated me to join the
recreational team in middle school I
joined the traveling team and my
freshman year I was one of the three
people who actually made the varsity
team so why is it crucial that as
adolescents we adopt certain or
statistic traits for my success in
soccer it was important that as a child
I was being narcissistic I probably
wasn’t one of the better players on the
team but I practiced and acted as if I
was until I eventually became one of
those players that I used to admire this
is most important for adolescents due to
a theory first outlined by Sigmund Freud
he considered narcissism to be a natural
human characteristic and termed and
coined the term healthy narcissism Otto
Kern Berg and Heinz Kohut two eminent
psycho analysts elaborated on this idea
they explained how it is important that
early narcissistic needs are met and how
once this happens the individual moves
on to a form of positive more mature
self-esteem it’s possible for adults to
retain this healthy narcissism as well
but instead of being focused on being
the center of the universe it changes
into something that’s more like taking
pride in your own accomplishments and in
yourself this is most important for the
current generation a critic because
according to a 2011 study done by
Professor Patrick Hill of univer of the
University of urbana-champaign the
benefits of narcissism reach a peak
during the adolescent stage he states
that being narcissistic gives
adolescence the necessary self agency
and optimism to develop personalities
independent from the negative influences
in their lives
children and adolescents idolize others
we strive to be like the dominant
figures in our lives even if these
people are probably not the best role
models a professor Hill discovered was
that adolescents with narcissistic
traits were able to break from their
negative idols and instead cultivate
their own unique characteristics the
same study also found that narcissism
benefits adolescents because it helps
cushion the impact of failure during our
transition into adulthood unfortunately
as I grew older I started to care more
about what others thought and I
constantly doubted myself I tried to do
theater in seventh grade but in a
production of Julius Caesar when I was
supposed to be stabbing him I tripped on
stage and I stabbed myself I was greeted
by plenty of e to brew tastes in the
hallway so I seemed dismissed acting and
I focused on other things this middle
school age is when we begin to compare
ourselves to others and this can be
detrimental to our development for me my
fear of failure and judgment led to the
end of a great activity one other major
problem that teens face is suicide
according to a 2007 morbidity mortality
weekly report adolescents are the only
age group with suicide in the top five
causes of death but 2012 study done a
professor Freud Stein of the Schneider
Medical Center found that adolescents
were more self-critical where it
severely higher risk for having suicidal
thoughts most importantly they found
that one of these strongest predictors
of severe suicidal behavior was low
narcissism scores so it’s clear that
some people need to become more
narcissistic but to what degree now I’m
not advocating that we gain an extreme
ego or to develop an inflated sense of
self rather that we gain the necessary
self-esteem to confront the negative
influences that others and the world
around us can have on our personal image
like all good things we must apply our
narcissism in moderation if your parents
give you some advice it’s important to
take it into account but if the local
bully is making fun of your clothes you
can instead be narcissistic and realize
that the only opinion that matters
is your own applying narcissism
selectively like this can lead to great
benefits for example I used to be
terrified of public speaking
but I pushed myself to do this and what
helped me write my speech get up here
and actually deliver it is that I knew I
had this in me I knew I could do it and
I wasn’t going to let anything stop me
some people might call that confidence
but honestly it takes one being
completely narcissistic things up here
and give a speech just because I love
the sound of their own voice this isn’t
just confidence my friends this is
full-blown narcissism when we look
around us we see that we live in a world
built for narcissists in order to
progress in this world we must think
past our negative connotation for
narcissism and instead realized that
there are some benefits to adopting
certain artistic traits as Muhammad Ali
said I’m the greatest I said that before
I knew I was some people become servants
to the narcissism but Ali was a man who
leveraged narcissism and made it work
for him how can we expect others to
trust us if we don’t trust ourselves in
order to become great we must first
believe that we are the greatest now I
know most people end their speech by
thanking the audience for listening but
in keeping with today’s topic I’ll leave
you with a few words you’re welcome
