The Improbability of This Talk | Prithvi Gundlapalli | TEDxYouth@SAJC

my name is Chrissy it’s great to be back
yeah if you see me on the different
circumstances my name might be TJ mvi
instead inside so my talk is tied up in
probability of this so what exactly so
improbable about it see they’ve been a
lot of things that have happened in my
life some of these things have happened
by chance I think some of these things
also the reason why I’m quite attracted
to stop so start by telling you probably
the most important things that has
happened to me is this thing called the
science research program it’s a
comprehensive nine months a journal
research project actually then you get
to do in in us under na newest professor
and I did this in JC one so this all
started about when my teacher just made
announcement of the pastor said there’s
this thing called science research
program so really nice program we get to
do you get to learn a lot of Technology
I recommend you take it up and have
someone who’s always been very
interested in science and research so I
thought about it and it seemed like
something really good but it’s a year
long and it’s in JC one it’s very hard
to manage what you think so I wasn’t
very keen on taking it out initially so
when my home one day that day and I was
having a random dinner conversation with
my parents telling them what happened at
school and so on and I casually
mentioned that there was this this
opportunity that I’ve been to that it
was and I said that it’s cool but I
don’t think I’m good
and my sister looked at me a bit strange
to me and said why not because she knows
how he died in science and research and
there was a golden opportunity and I was
just drinking away so she’s like I
raised my concern about not having time
and she had already graduated from JC by
then and she gave me some very
interesting advice it was something on
the lines of you’ll never have time for
anything unless you make time for it and
something kind of just clicked in me at
that point and I decided okay go home
and die let me just see what what
happens if I take it and so I did so I
signed up for it I passed the entrance
test and I decided to do a research
project on batteries rechargeable
batteries batteries have just been
something that fascinated me as a kid
when I was experimenting with all my
it’s just something that followed me
since a kid so I decided okay let me
research do some research on these
batteries fast forward a few more months
later I was testing up these batteries
that are built and I found something
very very very strange the batteries in
some sense got better the more you use
them that’s really because if you look
at most consumer electronics like your
forms the first day you got your phone
the battery lasted read it off two years
later it lasts
you’d be lucky to get half a day out of
it right I might it will be opposite
they got slightly better the more you
use them it’s completely unexpected
spa’s called a few more – thousand JC –
bye
and there is this science that I called
the Singapore Science and Engineering
Fair this is the 2013 it’s the largest
national science fair I signed up for it
I got into that and bear in mind I went
for the science fair
there were two people from actually JC
over there all the other students
whatever from the other schools and all
their teachers were there all the other
students were there they were all
rehearsing non-stop in this me and I
just went that didn’t work with my
father I didn’t know who was the charge
Osprey lost and I was really intimidated
up to this point in my life I was pretty
much the definition of an average day I
went for this science fair edges again
she’s gonna talk about what I did and
how would you see my results up it’s
exactly what I did turns out I won that
science fair or something I would never
do you know but it did anything I was
also selected after that to represent
Singapore the International Science and
Engineering Fair in Arizona the u.s. in
the same year that was pretty crazy for
me an average kid Sunday all sudden you
know representing the country and the
end there once as an international
science fair
I won I won a couple of awards actually
one was from the American Chemical
Society they gave me the first prize and
overall in the category of chemistry at
least ii remember how is just an average
kid up after all of this happened and if
you be any there’s a lot more things
that happen after a lot more awards
given the scholarship that I’m on right
now came out of all of this but if you
think about where all of this started
out rules over random dinner
conversation I have my sister
taking this research project up just so
happened to part it up so what happened
that my sister talks me through it
so what can I change my mind look at all
the thing that’s very interesting thing
that’s happened to me by chance and it
goes on more there’s some other things
that are happening so I’m in the US and
I’m on the archery team and I like this
picture of a few reasons firstly I think
it looks cool secondly I thought of my
mistakes
so I actually so neither have I I just
decided to join actually the first part
was something fun things so enjoyed
actually and that I was a lot of fun and
a couple of months later I developed a
very interesting problem that was
referred to as a target painting it’s
great it’s a just psychological problem
that quite a lot of actors face so I’ll
explain to you what – oh God so this is
what unnormal you expect when actually
shot would be like this is massively
oversimplified but you get the idea so
you raise your bowl you draw the string
you aim and then you let go so good
enough right but this is what company
does to you
Keenum even amongst you might know this
the aiming has now been thrown out the
window and if you’re trying to hit a
target at some distance that’s kind of
important right so target panic is its
psychological problem any attempt and if
you have to try again when you’re a full
draw you instinctively release your
screen it’s a very strange feeling it’s
it’s I can explain because yeah and I’m
holding the ball and drag the string
back it’s my role
turning everything but I have no control
over when everybody’s the same that’s
weird what you think so it’s running
around in bed one day like really
annoying with this problem trying to
think about what comes green wrong and I
stumbled across very powerful lesson out
of all of this don’t you think this is
what chronic addiction feels like and
all this junk really fast when I
actually to addiction but but think
about it most addicts know what they’re
doing it’s wrong but they can’t get
themselves to stop what they’re doing
that’s exactly what I was feeling like I
tried so hard to have control over my
homeboy and whenever needs to stream but
I simply couldn’t I just had no control
it’s it’s really it’s like someone else
is controlling me I think that’s big
powerful lesson for me because addiction
is something that we can just explain to
people so for me I think having been
through this experience and having some
understanding of what it’s like this is
a really powerful lesson there’s the
third thing that happened to me by
chance recently or the string of trances
so walking paths while walking running
actually from one lecture connect to
another
anyway I came across this poster does
anybody recognize you know Martin yaksas
okay great
if you don’t know him I strongly
recommend you check it out because one
of this top songs on YouTube just
crossed a billion views like few weeks
ago so
so I’ve always been interested in
electronic dance music like I listen to
it all the time even when I’m studying
my friends think I’m crazy for that and
DJing is kind of something that goes
with this so it’s something I’ve always
wanted to become and so what was this
poster that by chance are just running
out for my electronic copies to the
front of my eye and the poster reads
want to be like Martin Greg now I guess
I want to get that money guys so I
signed up for this and a few weeks into
this DJing course my hostel in the u.s.
announced that they were having a
graduation right and they asked me to
emcee for it said okay sure I don’t mind
hey I got the idea or what if I could DJ
for this event too so just think I can
eat it what we read you I made it sound
like you know have a lot of experience
of times before but I hadn’t finished it
and that’s how this happened
so this picture is not which I really
like I’m not sure if you can see but my
expression is a bit I look kind of
confused
the thing is I was so gasping nervous
obviously a snake like 250 something
people and I haven’t finished the basic
PJ goes so I had my headphones on and I
was just from doing my mixing and so on
look at me were people that you know
topical musical I was shocked
my friend happened to have got this
picture that exactly
so this was across by transom and there
was some more things that happened i
snotted tell all my friends about this
that I can DJ here that I wanted DJ
tonight and so on were started to
Spanish and orientation caps are coming
up in in us and actually right now a
couple of friends that do not get a visa
for the orientation caps and some of the
night prominent events I finish the
beginners course by now so so I think
that’s quite a big thing for me to
establish from walking past poster
coming all the way here but my
conclusion after all these things is not
that I’m a lucky person I mean I think
that’s not the point
so how are you do realize that is that
Blind Luck doesn’t really get you places
that need some kind of facilitation you
need to help it move it along before you
really make it to something big let me
give you some examples of in this
context so for my research project sure
the batteries performed better than I
expected but it wasn’t just like I threw
together some chemicals at night I went
through probably like 80 90 research
papers most of which I understood like a
few sentences in there and I spent a lot
of time on that every day after school
cause they can’t do coolant sapphire go
to the labs say the librarians to attend
go back home I might inherit like some
ungodly hour and it’s there
to your phone book wake up at 6:00 or
school the next day that was pretty much
my life in jc1 and I tried very hard and
for accurate yes it was a very very
unexpected lesson I think I had from
that but it only happened because I
wanted to try something new and I took
it took the opportunity to try something
and I signed up cause variations for
that’s how all this happened and for DJ
of course I randomly won’t pass the
poster but after that I started to let
people know that I had this skill and
another one to detail and that’s how I
owe these things that the rest of the
things happened so blind Club is it
really going to get you to places this
what you do with the small opportunities
they have to push them along to make
them into something bigger and there’s
another interesting important lesson is
that I could have never predicted any of
the things that came out of what of all
these things that I pursued I just took
them up and well sort of when on bottom
soft and not lucky what happened and I
think that’s where the value of taking
chances lies because you can’t be sure
what’s going to happen you just need to
try your best and hope that you get you
somewhere that’s well thank you
