Critical reflection: a road to empathy and growing relationships | Nirmal Nanayakkara | TEDxQUT

[Music]
empathy walk in another shoes and feel
what the others would feel it’s a
blessing that makes our relationships
grow but too much could be a curse that
ends in relationship how much can we
afford to work in another shoes without
feeling compromised and how far should
we walk in another shoes anyway and how
would we know this
my answer is critical reflection
critical thinking involves analyzing
inferring and deducing reasons we can
analyze a partner’s behavior or their
responses through reflection then
through inference and deduction we can
identify the reasons why they behave the
way they did by doing so we can find
their comfort in their own shoes as we
feel in other shoes reflection before
response gives us an opportunity to
choose an appropriate behavior because
most often in our relationships we tend
to base our responses on emotive
reasoning because emotions and real and
feelings direct our responses as they
lack that level of critical reflection
sometimes these responses tend to be
inconsiderate
in my life there was plenty of times
where I went oh I should have waited for
another minute before I you know
responded to her the way I did should
have taken another minute thought a
moment and reflect upon it before I
responded reflecting on own behavior at
times might reveal our sheer stupidity
but most often and most importantly it
lets us find our human flows that we
so my message is critical thinking and
critical reflection helps us find
empathy and lets us manage our responses
and most important it gives us an
opportunity to avoid those human flows
and respond with care compassion and
sensitivity so if we can demonstrate
this much of empathy and this level of
understanding and care we through
critical thinking and reflection we
cultivate the room for our relationships
to grow and flourish thank you [Applause]
