good evening teachers students parents
and shippers my name is Emma ski and I
want to first start my talk by asking
all of you a fairly simple question
raise your hand if right now you think
that you are pursuing their passion okay
thank you to those two answers now even
if you it or is your hands on a nuclear
fusion answer I’d like to I’d like you
to keep that passion of yours in mind
tonight as I speak about the power of
passion now what is action before diving
20 I want to first define passion
specifically would take a passion that
our differences tonight pageant is many
different roots good all about pretty
concurrent leading for instance the line
the past year refers to suffering while
the old French term for passion refers
to Christ’s suffering on the cross now
forgive me if it sounds like a history
lesson but Jesus’s passion her first the
time in juice is like when he returns to
Jerusalem and is responding the cross
now what while Jesus was suffering he
was suffering for all that he was
passionate about Hebrews chapter 12
verse 2 says for the joy set before him
he endured the cross scorning its shame
and sat down the right hand of the
throne of God so the sons of the word
passions extended beyond just suffering
to suffering for a strong emotion or
desire to achieve a happiness or inches
this case this joy now will pursuing
your passion involves up right most
likely and even most people including
myself at some point fear to work
passionate so openly this connotation
has surrounded passion that our passions
in the form of the best job for also the
most intense sport for us whatever has
been quote unquote destined for us
Eleazar in TED talk called stop
searching for your passion which is
actually grand by the OpenAL of being
the charger species and she said that
there’s a dangerously limiting idea a
part of everything you know about
success in life in general and that’s we
have and that’s that we have one
singular passion and our job is to
pursue it to the exclusion of all of us
except for soon here actually to think
is complicated or even this stressful
she later on said that passion is not a
plan it’s a feeling and I have to agree
with the same sure passion could be a
job or sport but it could also be
something that is tangible like the
feeling we get when we have truly help
something our passion and whatever or
whatever that might be and a feeling of
fulfillment associated with that should
allow us to achieve happiness or in
Jesus case this joy now like I said
follow your passions be challenging at
times and for adults the main concern is
rooted in five instances many times we
see people working a job you don’t
necessarily enjoy only to pay the bills
so to speak and a mom in a certain
deloitte shift index survey 80% of
people so they were not satisfied with
their job that’s a lot of people and if
these people have a lack of financial
means which dissuade them from pursuing
something that they really want to enjoy
and thriving
Marissa Evans CEO and founder of go try
on condo did something that many people
are not willing to do she risked
everything is on the online business
everything a graduate of Cornell
University of Harvard Business School
when she was 26 years old with the help
of an IT friend and money saved up she
shot her online francisco trial on calm
or users can basically submit photos of
outfits and then receive feedback to
other users and while i’m not even
yelling to drop everything and create
online business we there’s something
that we can learn from here about Evans
experience she recognized her passion
for entrepreneurship had an idea
capitalize on that something very good
also something very audible now they can
be like your job or your work remember
that and
dedicating your time too but you’re not
saying patcher about it and look at it a
responsibility at work various authors
examined have social norms culture and
motivation overlap create work that is
beneficial economically socially and
personally and how the core of this work
is our responsibility to one’s own work
and its repercussions and this in an end
in a section entitled evidently passion
the honors examined how you can
cultivate this passion that leads to
good work and in the research part which
was called the good work projects that
participants stress enjoying what they
do and according to the authors the
responsibility to fulfill this passion
and thus contribute to society is what
allow them to challenge their
conventional path of their respective
domains so we see that passion allows us
to enjoy what we’re doing but it also
allows us to positively effectively
influence those that we work with so
with regard to actually prosper in the
sense of passion in this sense of risk
to go out and print change and influence
people we work with the participants in
this research said that they heard
without some criticisms of society four
main focus on the ways in which they can
use their responsibilities to create
change and improve that those that they
worked with so I think this is where we
see like the real power of passion
passion allows us to is our passion is a
vehicle it allows us to extend our
particular area of work but it also
allows us to influence positively then
create change those that we work within
those are we
my wife now I’ve been speaking a lot to
be able to the room and added it to
should switch gears and talk to my peers
and the students and I hope I ever over
Willinger with all this talk of my work
and jobs but I want to emphasize again
that passion is not in to be one sole
thing interest videos TED talk
she said that path was simply the full
force of your attention and energy into
whatever you put into right what’s right
in front of you so sure actually can be
as large as starting an online business
it can also be something as small but as
impactful as maybe putting on a tire
effort into that club during school or
make a homework assignment although that
may be struck you because I really push
it out on her but the point is that
passion should not be this huge daunting
entity but again rather feeling and the
reason I decided to speak to you tonight
even I would think I knew that until the
summer actually had the opportunity to
listen to a speaker named here at Boston
and Karen Lawson is a structural
engineer for hntd Corporation and let
just be she oshi emphasizes the
importance of engaging in something that
brings an unmatched joy and allows us to
be less concerned with how much money
we’re getting paid or how good our
grades are or how look on a resume and
lay cloth and also basically recognize
her passion for bridge is something I
even realized a passion about about and
she pursued this tirelessly and what
made Lawson speech so profound is that
she recognized him
we may not always realize success is not
about where we live or how much money
you need but success is simply about
happiness so do any passion to be
successful most likely it is
inexplicable and incomparable enthusiasm
that republished to be productive it may
seem obvious going we actually like what
we’re learning playing and doing we’re
more motivated to learn to play to do it
and thus our work becomes more efficient
probably better overall now say me have
this feeling but it’s just knowing what
I’m feeling what our passion is enough
most likely no it’s how we act on is
what we do with this gnome
etymologically truly truly successful
now for me it’s a little intimidating to
think that one day to make one career in
one major just right for me out of time
doing everything from making mac and
cheese to just simply saving the shower
but I want to emphasize again that
passion is not a plan it’s a feeling so
sure you may think that passion is just
knowing what you like to do but that’s
what we have about it the next step is
how we act on that and what we do with
that passion so as I finish my speech I
want a few points of encouragement for
all of you and my first thing is
determine what you don’t like to do in
life or just wait you’re with your denim
phases and this may seem
counterintuitive but will mean find out
those things that don’t bring a
satisfaction we’re actually one step
closer to determining what we
to do and my next point is always always
always charming things and I know may
seem scary but if we kind of thing to be
basically just broaden our horizons and
give ourselves more opportunities for
things that provoked our interests such
as bridges graphs for me I know when I
always playing sports right I thought
that if you’re an athlete it only plays
for to doing nothing else but this year
I started the musical and despite being
tone deaf I actually got a lot of
satisfaction in it and my last point is
that I want to encourage you all to
actually find time for those things that
bring you satisfaction and I know we all
need very busy lives but if we actually
find time for these things you’re one
step closer to that that happens then
joy and region even shows that those
that spend at least 15 minutes a day
making progress towards things that they
enjoy they report feeling satisfied and
fulfilled so again trying new things but
don’t feel pressure to try everything if
you’re truly in thread-like flow a sport
of gate metal tipping whatever that may
be
stick with it because we are passionate
about something the possibilities are
truly endless now I want to leave you
with all one last quote from Nelson
Mandela and I hope this inspires you to
continue or start at passion of yours
and it and it says may your choices
reflect your hopes not your fears thank
you
you
and shippers my name is Emma ski and I
