A War on the Media | Jarred DeHerrera | TEDxNorthCentralCollege

as I’ve learned from my experience in

the journalism industry

people really don’t like us plain and

last month our very own

commander-in-chief angrily tweeted this

the fake news media is not my enemy but

it’s the enemy of the American people as

you can see in this tweet he then

proceeded to tag the failing New York

Times NBC News

ABC CBS and of course CNN now I’m not

here to talk politics so please rest

those angry Facebook fingers instead I’m

here to discuss the importance of

understanding the different perspectives

of an argument specifically as it

relates to this issue caused by what I

believe to be unfair dealer utilization

of the media for whatever reason people

love to hate whether it’s because they

believe that the information being

reported on is false like fake news or

whether they think that the media is too

one-sided the popular opinion of the

industry as a whole is usually just not

a good one I guess it’s a good thing

that bias is in the eyes of the beholder

then there’s a perspective of the

businesses or in this case the media

companies themselves now as I’ve learned

in several finance classes here at

northcentral the most important thing to

any business is to ensure that its

revenues outweigh its expenses now my

father told me something once that would

stick with me forever

business is in business to stay in

business just like with these media

companies if you’re unhappy with the

perspective of these media companies you

don’t necessarily have a problem with

the media industry but instead a problem

with business last month’s a few of our

journalists on our Chronicle staff had

the opportunity to hear a keynote speech

by six-time Emmy Award winner Chris

burry of Al Jazeera’s America tonight

although he left us with a lot of

valuable information

there was one quote that our group

thought really encompassed the true

journalists perspective

he said if you spent any time in

newsrooms

you’d know that our bias is not as much

political but that we are biased in

and then there’s a perspective of the

journalist last September New York Times

columnist Francis Lam tweeted journalism

it’s a tough job within same pressure

and pretty crappy pay on the other hand

now I’ve been fortunate to work for my

student news organization in which money

matters far more and content matters far

less excuse me in which money matters

now like most news art major news

organizations including ours we have a

forum section whose main purpose is to

relate to the opinions of the general

public

the problem with relating to that

specific group in today’s day and age is

that there’s such a division among

perspectives that these media companies

feel almost as if they can’t win that

along with people not really

understanding the difference between

opinion and hard news is a problem that

the industry faces all the time so the

next time you find yourself quick to

label something from a major legitimate

news sources fake news ask yourself

first is this something I simply don’t

want to hear yes my perspective is in

defense of the media because of my

experience but since when is looking at

an issue from all perspectives such a

crazy thing to think about maybe if we

tried a little bit more of that we

wouldn’t need a war on the media now

please if you’re in the audience and you

have some sort of strong disagreement or

strong problem with what I’ve just said

just remember we simply have a different

opinion your agreement is much less

important than your understanding thank you god bless
