I would like you all to think about what
you spent your time doing yesterday
really think about it
did you pinch watch a new show on
Netflix play video games with friends
spend hours scrolling through Instagram
now I want you to think about what you
wasted your time doing yesterday did you
binge watch a new show on Netflix play
video games with friends spend hours
scrolling through Instagram our answer
is the same are they different now I’m
not suggesting that any of the things
you’ve listed are either good or bad in
their own right
everyone has their owner has their own
understanding at what it means to use
time well or poorly more importantly
it’s something that can change based on
the day or our moods what I’d like to
discuss is if the way we’re choosing to
spend our time is limited by anything
what I’d like to suggest today by
telling you this term how I started my
initiative swing is that anyone can
inspire social change if I can do it you
can too
regardless of your age or skill set
anyone can look up from their smartphone
get up get out and help others what I
found is that instigating this type of
social change requires three important
things passion compassion and
selflessness I’ve been playing golf for
more than five years and I’m a member of
quoits junior team I first started
playing golf
completely by coincidence I remember one
day while sitting on the sofa watching
youtube videos on my phone and my mom
was ever been the biggest fan of seeing
me doing nothing came in and asked me
what my plans were when I didn’t reply
she told me I had to come up with
something new I’d like to try I don’t
even think I looked up from my phone but
I remember blurting out well I don’t
want something new how about golf just
like that my first lesson was booked and
just like that I was hooked on the sport
and had found my passion like me you
probably already have the passion take a
second to think about what it is and
once you’ve started tied down
what you really enjoy spending your time
doing the next step is to figure out how
to apply it the catalyst for swing was a
ninth grade school project called
20-time we were supposed to work for 20%
of our time
throughout the entire school year on
just one project the first thing I
thought well after chrony got the idea
that time commitment was that I wanted
my project got something to do with golf
and helping people after about a month
or so of extensive research I found that
golf and special needs are perfect match
in quake were the mid to sports like
swimming or horseback riding so bringing
a new outlet got me really excited
Golf is slow-paced and doesn’t require
the children to pick up social cues from
your typical team sports like soccer or
basketball so I started working on the
plan to pitch my idea knocked up with
research and approached the management
of Sahara Club where I trained who were
beyond supportive and often sponsor the
whole initiative the next key to
starting smooth the next key to starting
swing was compassion compassion for the
students is of course the heart of what
we do at first being a young teenager
myself I was nervous about working with
children with special needs because I
knew I wouldn’t immediately be able to
predict their temperaments or reactions
so I really have to step out of my
comfort zone I remember Ahmed who
started off being very timid emotional
and in many instances difficult to
control however we all persevered with
love and patience now when he’s dropped
off a swing he’s so excited and runs to
the volunteers clunk them by their first
names from seeing this type of change
watching the children developed from
using plastic drivers dealing with real
clubs it’s a progress that keeps us
going
year after year which brings me to my
last point I would like to talk a little
bit about selflessness
to be honest my biggest challenge was
being selfless with my time i suspended
my weekends at the chalet with my family
and friends playing soccer cards or
video games if my parents asked me to
run an errand for them I’ll complain I
hated the idea of sacrificing time that
was important to me I couldn’t have
imagined then the fact that I’m now
cutting my weekend short by a full day
where every Saturday I’m rushing to the
courses set up
meet coaches and prepare stations for
all the children well might have upset
me before makes me feel happy now and
I’ve never been much of a worrier either
but I find myself stressing about a
child not wanting to participate in a
hoop throwing game well you know what
it’s not selflessness we’re talking
about here that kept me going so after
talking to you about my experience with
swing for over five minutes but who’s
counting you’re probably ready for a
golf lesson actually I think the golf
swing is a great metaphor for inspiring
social change now draw your driver back
keeping your weight centered over your
toes rotating your shoulders hold on
that was a real golf tip supposed to be
a metaphor the backswing owning applying
and sharing your passion the swing is
the excitement of realizing thing you
can use what you love to help people now
notice that even as I stream through the
ball I keep my eyes down until it’s left
the club I look up too early and I’ll
slice the ball I look up too early and I
might lose focus on what’s really
important
only when the swing is completed will I
be able to look up in the same way
choose your moment to look up from your
phone leave that screen for even a
minute and look around you might be
surprised like me by our ability to use
compassion and selflessness to make a
difference in the
of others and now I just have one
question for you looking up getting out
and helping others can you swing it [Applause]
