TEAM – Together Everyone Achieves More | Derrone Wilson | TEDxWestMiddleSchool

good afternoon everyone I’m going to
talk to you guys a little bit about
teamwork and the importance of teamwork
working together as a team working
together in function we have one unit
for a common goal
I know as we’re coming up as we go we
always here ready
there’s no lie and team and I thought we
know sometimes that way one ear and out
the other but as the older I got the
more experience I got I realized how
important that really is because with
the team it’s really important to not
put yourself first and obviously focus
on your individual achievements or your
individual goals so to me there are
three important factors to have a
successful team the first one is respect
the second one is communication and the
third one is knowing your team’s
strengths and weaknesses that’s not
respecting you know how you coming up we
always talk to the spectrum elders
respect yourself
but when function as a team it’s really
important to spec to respect those on
your team because if you’re bringing
ideas opinions to the table is very very
important that you respect those ideas
respect those opinions because it’s not
you can’t come across as negative and
then they may not want to share ideas
with the team ever again respect is two
ways and also one thing about respect is
that it is important to respect your
teammates but that does not mean that
you have to really like them or love
them or have a relationship where you
guys are hanging out on the weekend
like that but you guys were working for
a common goal
it is definitely important to respect
your teammates an example of that
all of you sport just because on a coach
so everybody knows mostly you hopefully
know Alan on sticks
Allen Iverson was a great talent really
really great talent but he had some some
turmoil as he got to the NBA with some
of his comments for his teammates about
not going to go to practice and practice
wasn’t important
and so he’s lost a little respect from
his teammates now they have enough
talent that year where they should have
won the NBA championship because they
had two or three all-stars great coach
Hall of Fame coach Allen Iverson led the
league in scoring that year but because
he did not gain the respect of his
teammates during that season they lost
like they lost with Lakers actually the
loss of LA Lakers that here and did not
win the NBA championship and afterwards
players retired and they’ve got to tell
their story about that season one of the
main things that came up was well we
didn’t respect our leader now I’m not
saying was our limit and we didn’t
respect his leadership because we felt I
can’t respect us with some of this
comments some of his action
thanks to that nature and so if you
don’t have respect amongst yourself as a
team it can all crumble so just make
sure when you’re working together on a
school project when you’re working
together get your job with your fellow
employees or you’re working together
with your teammates and soccer football
basketball track make sure first and
foremost that you’re showing each other
respect and that’s how you communicate
that’s how you answered body language is
an important part of respect you know
someone’s talking sharing
and you got a negative body language a
for posture and you’re looking off into
the Stars and not paying attention that
is a lack of respect so make sure it’s
your operation on respect to your peers
because it goes a long way there’s a lot
of times people say well I may not agree
with what they say or what they suggest
it but I respect what they say or what
they suggest that can go a long ways
especially they can come back around and
make big decisions as a team they’re
respectable though along the way
secondly I want to talk about
communication most importantly when
you’re on the team communication is the
key
whether that’s in your job personal
relationships or as a sports
organization of sports teams as well
communication is very important and the
thing that I want to know about
communication is that you always want to
try and communicate positively it is
really important to communicate possibly
because put yourself in someone else’s
shoes if someone is communicate to
communicate to you with anger or
negativity you’re not going to see that
very well no one wants to be talked down
to
no one wants to be put in a negative 5
or negative atmosphere so when your
communication with each other people on
your team make sure you keep it positive
always try to communicate positive as a
coach there’s times where I know we’re
not playing as well as we should or
we’re not executing plays I can practice
all week but in the heat of the moment
as a team you don’t want to come
because most of the players will
maintain it always part of the net you
gotta keep it positive if you gotta try
to come up pipe them up motivator it the
best out and if there’s someone on your
team that’s lacking that the positive
way to handle that is not confronted
there from the entire team pull them
aside say hey you know during our
meeting here are doing this team
function I see that he was making it or
he wasn’t at your best pull on the side
and talk to them never try to confront
people on your team in front of the
other team members because that comes
across its negative as well so make sure
you take the time that you’re gonna take
with them and also when you communicate
be honest always be honest guys is it
important to be honest when you
communicate with each other especially I
use personal relationships for at read
this your girlfriend your sister your
lover your life or whatever is always
really important behind the front that
way you can work on that problem as a
team right then there you don’t have to
come back later and say well I’ve meant
to say this but I gave you because I
didn’t want to hurt your feelings and
things of that nature so if you’re
honest upfront
it makes the dynamics of the team that
much better and usually when you’re
honest you’ll get honest feedback and
that’s the important of communicating as
Wales when someone is communicating to
you or presenting you with different
options or different opportunities that
you make sure to give an honest feedback
if there’s something that you don’t
agree with give that feedback just make
sure you’re giving it back in a positive
way
you understand what I’m saying so make
sure when you’re communicating constant
that’s positive people feel better when
you’re positive whether it’s a positive
ID positive atmosphere makes everybody
feel better it makes it easier to work
together
team when that everybody’s getting along
and everybody is communicating in a
positive manner so just take that to
those guys and lastly what I want touch
on about team is know your team
strengths and weaknesses I think that
gets overlooked sometimes is that people
come in with their own agenda and are
focused only on our own agenda and not
take the time to get to know whoever’s
on their team and know their strengths
and know their weaknesses so when you’re
working together as a team there are
going to be people that bring different
strengths and weaknesses to the table
and so you have to play off of that if
I’m coaching the team I know that I’ve
got a couple of players that are really
good ball handlers and then I got a
couple players or they’re really good
shooters now I got some players that are
really good rebounder
as a coach I have to figure out a way to
incorporate all of their strengths in
one so we could be the best team that we
can be that’s how you’re successful but
everybody’s bringing their strengths to
the table and we’re piggybacking off of
each other that is how teams are
successful can’t be one person that has
all the ideas it can’t be one person
that knows it all can’t be one person
that’s taking all the responsibilities
it has to be a team effort and teams
guys don’t have to be five to ten people
a team can be two people that’s the team
if it’s human somebody else you guys
that work together as a team to get that
task at hand done you understand what
I’m saying and then one person may be
done to this the other way to the deck
yeah the community can come together and
put your strings together to make the
best possible outcome that you can give
so I understand that here’s more my arm
my state championship ring today because
I was fortunate enough to participate in
3a basketball state hospital
championship couple years ago so we’re
in a championship game we’re playing
against Kansas City box though another
Catholic school as you heard me
production I coach a father total and we
have four truckers our team
Jonte and Michael who were that they
played for Mizzou with our degrade in an
NBA Draft
I’m sorry and there’s the game real
close game back before John Taylor
Michael both pick up their fourth pal
only five minutes left in the game so
coach said we’re gonna leave them in and
ride it out you know these kids are very
very highly talented talented young
meaning like Michael’s ranked number two
in the nation John Tate was ranked maybe
five or six in the nation so both people
want to surface looks like that’s our
team them too
it’s the forward brothers and the Trail
Blazers and so about two and a half
minutes left
John take us out about two minutes left
Michael fouls out so we literally got to
finish the game without our two
superstar players or state championship
cop a timeout we get in the huddle
everybody’s happy is down thank you know
my gosh where we’re gonna do we’re gonna
lose they found out what are you gonna
do wudu gang was like x so me being me I
get in the huddle tell our kids this is
a team we’ve worked up here practice out
here as a team we got here as a team and
we’re going to finish
as a team Michael and Dante are going to
support their teammates on the bench
because they can’t play because they
found out that’s right Michael Dante to
do and I’m directing you guys to go out
there and execute they have the
confidence as a team that we can keep
the top of them I mean everybody
understand you just sound like the air
just went out the whole building it was
really why because they thought my gosh
they’re gonna lose the game and so our
guys went back out there executed played
with confidence
Jonte and Michael were the biggest
supporters the biggest cheerleaders on
the sideline pumping our guys on
clapping cheering doctor crowd stand
everybody was like and we ended up
winning that game by one point so never
think that one person or two people are
bigger than the entire team because it’s
not like that everybody contributes
everybody has been some weaknesses
everybody’s bringing something to the
table so understand if you’re part of
the team you’re just as important as
anybody else on that team and if your
leaders not communicating that to you
then they’re probably not a good leader
understand that’s what everybody when
you’re part of the team but it’s a
two-man team a 510 team or team of 50
everybody has to understand that they’re
equally as important as everybody else
on that team
so know that understand the three
factors of being on a team respect
communication and knowledge speaks and
weaknesses and if you do that take those
in the mind when you’re being a part of
the team
sky’s the limit and I think everyone
thank you [Applause]
