Learning for Learning’s sake: tapping into the power of curiosity. | Joy Jegede | TEDxYouth@Kingtom

good afternoon my name is joy decadent
and at 20 years old I currently work at
the top law firm in the country and
consult a regular basis with the best
private consulting firm in cheerio how
did I get here
I made a habit of learning for learnings
sake I’m not much friends I’m notorious
for a little irritating habit it’s not
very easy to just a little I asked way
too many questions I want to know
everything about anything and today I
have what questions for you something
I’m very curious about when were in
school or if you’re in school how many
times did you study a textbook dig into
a subject take an extra course just
because you want it to you know judge
because you have curious just because
well I like to know what this is really
about you are not trying to get a grave
we’re not trying to look good on your TV
we’re not trying to get skills for a job
you just wanted to know how many times
whoever than that not so many names but
the other outside school or after school
you started something that it will
subject not because you had a practical
use for it at the moment
you were just curious if you can’t thank
you it’s not something we do often it’s
not something many people do at all in
fact because we just want to get a grade
pass the class get a degree get a job
that’s it we live in a pretty two-tiered
society where and we go to college to
get a job exercise to get fees we don’t
usually do things for themselves we just
do it as a means to an end and we apply
the same thing to learn it we don’t
learn the subjects because we want to
know because they’re Paris because of
fun you just want to get a great and
learning it’s an adverb
the end in itself is always just a means
to an end for so many people by children
and intellectual curiosity is becoming
or has become one of the greatest
determinant of personal satisfaction and
along with your intelligence or
emotional intelligence it’s also a great
determinants for your career success and
by contractual curiosity I mean a
persistent and deep desire to know it
means you ask why did you wear that
dress
it means you ask why this kept down it
means you ask what causes the waves on
the beach you love walking or why my
voice louder and speak into the
microphone you just want to know
I’m not worth for asking those questions
because regaining your curiosity is
probably the best fun decision you can
make this year and seven regaining
because we used to have it mounted
children we have so many questions want
you to know everything we were learning
about the world around those everything
was interesting we wanted to know and
some studies have shown that for really
curious children asked almost 73
questions their days none of us do that
we don’t have that so why should we go
back to that why should we ask questions
why should we be clearest why should I
look at just rid of me when my daily
life revolves around making arguments in
court why is it that extra cause in
college when it’s not going to help me
any marks were adding it into my degree
why you’re going to be four isn’t the
first is creativity and innovation a
2007 a study done in the u.s. showed
that there is a positive and direct link
between here as to tea and creativity
and it goes those whether you have to
see you ask questions and see you seek
information and that leads to idea
generation you get so many ideas and
allege to wala creativity
yeah ask the box ideas because if I
could ask a question
that’s what is good it shows and one of
the form of Sciences of the world he
developed the terribly to beat the other
I’m sorry people say his IQ is estimated
at 160 and some of the earth units why
he develops so much but he has a
different opinion according to me I have
no special talents
I am only passionately curious he
doesn’t think his IQ is why he was such
a great scientist he thinks his
curiosity was the driver for all of that
so creativity and innovation and there’s
a quote that goes this way this path in
this part of every great idea is
curiosity
the future belongs to cures every
invention we can think of answers the
question what if man feels like we’ve
got the aeroplane what if I could talk
to somebody 10,000 miles away we’ve got
a telephone that was what clear is easy
for us and that is what first is going
to continue doing for us a second reason
why it should be curious why you should
learn to learning sake it has a critical
thinking and the ability to see things
from different perspectives and what hot
40 influences that is that choice to
makes you ask questions and when you ask
questions you look at things more you
think deeper about things she wants you
really understand so you got critical
thinking and because you’re thinking
more about that you seek different
perspectives you’re asking questions
that’s hard to see how it’s critical
thinking and getting different
perspectives so in a 2006 a study by in
dig you that also by new researchers
they showed that curiosity helps you to
cure bias and bias is one of the
why we cannot think before because we
already biased but we cure sort of
experience when this very far people
were scientifically knowledgeable
experts in your field great knowledge
and I thought people who had scientific
curiosity they just wanted to know there
are not necessarily the most elaborate
knowledgeable people so those who are
knowledgeable when it questions the fact
that the way the most part they have a
most polarizing opinions because your
knowledge did not necessarily change
them what it meant is that it just meant
that they defended the opinions you
already had the found knowledge have
supported the ideas they already had but
for those who are curious though able to
see different perspectives be able to
have better common ground and have a
better idea because there are cures so
women assume now that is what we need to
change people’s minds but what we really
need is open-mindedness dool neht to ask
questions the world has truly know so
you might think while creativity is nice
critical thinking is nice I don’t really
care about that I just want to get my
grade I just want to get a job but
Kirstie also helps me that Lisa so
Gannon is great and the 2014 study also
by my science Gruber it shows that when
you’re curious you have an active people
campus a new brain and an active people
temples means active and lockdown
receptive long-term memory when you’re
curious you take things slower you learn
faster but what is even more interesting
is when you get into the cures Day event
things you’re not interested in you
learn them faster you think
more because your brain is curious
you’re ready to learn you want to know
so you want to gather great get cures
and it always got a new job maybe you
won’t accept what I’ve said or what
research says but it surely are one of
our most leading physicians our little
traditions the one who co-founded
pioneered the quality of Matt’s name and
also don’t have the lead and I’m one of
the women that as the clinic’s
dr. Ian and Gordon Louise and disgusting
times we made it into video it has a
single advise young people ask questions
want to know don’t be afraid to ask
beakers so you want to gather brave sure
you want to get the job it still starts
with curiosity it still start with
learning for learnings sake and finally
there is well-being your satisfaction
also in the state 2014 study done by my
friend revenge and that it’s probably
showed was that when you’re curious it
activates a chemical in your body in
your brain the one of sometimes refer to
the better technical dopamine it’s not
really the pleasure chemical why it
really does this mataji’s reward and
motivation in your brain and pleasure
but when you curious that’s little
clinical so you’re sort of more happy
you’re happier when you’re curious and
excited to Tom Robbins
curiosity especially interact for
inquisitive man is the difference
between those we’re just going to the
motions and those actually
your life when you’re curious you have
fights and variety you don’t get bored
you want to know things you don’t get
easily that because there’s always
within you to discover there’s always
something to look forward to
that’s why you should be curious but why
don’t if you decide to do that if you
decide to ask questions if you decide to
want to know to the presence it’s got
extra hard look for it if you decide to
with that person it’s not going to come
easy
the first challenge you’re going to
think is for yourself
your intellectual laziness many of us
just want the answers we’re not really
if you go to the process of discovering
them for yourself we just want to know
what the popular is forlán thanks man
thanks Brett we don’t want to know how
did they get that from your work we just
wanted to know okay just give me this
I’ll find it out later I’ll find it out
the memory job but if you’re going to be
curious you have to be willing to spend
the time and the effort understanding
things yourself
for me personally it’s cool it meant
that when I had to study I’ll have to
refine the attitude around the topic if
I actually get it to the topic event for
me I wanted to know the laws in
different jurisdictions before actually
we know the law of my jurisdiction I
just wanted to know but when I actually
got to so dating I understood better and
it stood more the special ed you’re
going to face is the feedback you get
from other people what could you say
what would think they’ll think you
wasted your time they think you’ll be
too bookish you’re going to get all
sorts of comments if you’re a student
they might call you by Washington sabi
sabi sands ball
[Music]
with me but those are compliments
there are compliments here please
telling you that you’re absolutely
understanding the material they are
actually getting to know how to make
those things worse there are compliments
to your creativity and your ability to
critical think critically think which is
what employers will value either they
ignore it and so if you’re going to be
cured
if you’re going to be learning for
learnings sake your things you must be
willing to do the first now suggestions
be coming into actual result ask
questions when they’ll tell you this is
what you should do ask them why is that
the best way I should go when they tell
you well I’ve decided this is how which
to go tell them how to ask them how do
they draw that conclusion ask questions
that’s the default don’t judge because
everyone has done it this way this is
the best way to do it so in society
there’s a common default we have we
really go to school we go to college we
get a job get Eric I’m not against that
before but if you doubt default you have
three things that happen you either go
straight understand and sits on this now
why we should do that and you believe in
the default you say okay yeah I should
really go to school I should really get
a job and all that you believe in what
you’re doing you’re not just going
through the motions but you can also
decide the default it’s wrong and you
might not find out what the new default
should be but then you know the wrong
way that you should not go through part
11 have
I knew it that’s a way when you down to
the food I know where you’re gonna fit
the second thing I’ll suggest is be
open-minded being open-minded is noticed
about ask the questions within another
group or watching another documentary be
not to idle also involves listening to
other people’s opinions hearing what the
thing not just what but why they think
what they have they get to their
conclusions and so if you’re going to
convince them when you which agree with
them neither of which which should be
your goal you just want to go you have a
better chance and the last thing I’ll
suggest is regaining your sense of
wonder and follow it that wonder you had
when you were a child and you wants to
know everything about anything regain
that I’m going to give you a challenge
when you go back home when you look for
the most important thing you think
you’ve ever encountered look at it again
and find three principal things about it
three regain your sense of wonder but
today you’re not featuring regain it you
have to follow it so when you find
yourself bored when you find yourself
thinking well I have nothing to do look
for something you find interesting and
dive into it no matter how small it is
matter what it is it might be why don’t
want you to slime looking to it you find
something you have a dick you know that
you haven’t respected so if you’re going
to be the person who’s creativity and
critical thinking is value entire job
and it’s being up if you’re going
to be the student which will understand
material and conceptually get to the
grid if you’re going to have a
well-rounded and decisive life I
encourage you to learn for its sake
allow your curiosity spirit thank you
very much [Applause]
