Heal the Wounded | Eunice Ko | TEDxYouth@Harlow

so as um Ian
introduced me my name is UNESCO and I’ve
been in England for about five days now
and one of the things I’ve noticed is
that one well okay two of the things I
noticed is that one it’s really warm I’m
like sweating right now and the second
one is that I stick out in a crowd
because I did not look or sound like a
British and as a visitor it is fine for
me to feel like an outsider but in daily
life everyone wants to be included and a
group of people that we seem to
recognize but fail to reconcile with are
those who suffer already the mentally
ill when talking about mental health
sometimes a traumatic experience can set
off someone’s mental stability other
times a person can live with those
conditions for his entire life there has
been a lot of talks already done on the
topic of mental illness and we actually
watched a short clip of it right before
lunch however there is still a sense of
fear when we try to introduce this issue
inside our family and into our social
group and this hesitancy has created a
systematic gap amongst teams and in
between adults and teams
so how do we bridge this gap well
first set Hilde wounded this step is
geared more towards those who personally
suffer from mental illness of course
going to a doctor’s appointment and
getting the prescribed medication is the
number one priority but when I think of
mental illness it goes beyond the
medical necessities and more towards the
amount of peace and stability that a
person can have for example there’s a
lady by the name Ella London who
surrounds herself with the color yellow
when asked why she does this she states
that it makes her happy
and that it makes her and it comforts
her I think that’s a pretty well and
simple answer surround yourself with
things that make you feel productive and
healthy in fact on the plane ride to UK
I read that the human mind only allows
up to five people that we can build
close relationships with so you might
know 100 people but there are only five
people that can truly impact you in your
life so regarding that it is very
important for you to cut off toxic
relationships to make room for healthier
ones my second bit of advice is to take
rest now this might sound very
unrealistic because we take on a lot of
responsibilities and especially for
teens we feel like we have to choose
between achievement and rest and there’s
a lack of time of sessions available for
students however a lot of schools accept
medical leave
whether for physical or mental needs and
also there is a variety of education
educational pathways you can choose from
such as Running Start which is available
in US and online schooling and
homeschooling so do not feel ashamed to
take care of yourself first the second
step to bridging the gap is to remove
the stigma by learning I think this is
the most important step because one of
the obstacles when talking about mental
health is a sense of awkwardness that we
feel and this hesitancy stems from the
stigma that has been put on people who
suffer from mental illness in order to
combat this we have to educate ourselves
on what mental health actually is mental
illness does not discriminate on
someone’s age gender or socioeconomic
status it deserves treatment is like any
other health conditions except it tend
to require long term treat
and mental health is a part of life it’s
a routine it’s just a fact therefore it
doesn’t deserve all the controversy
surrounding it however it still stirs a
lot of bullying and hatred within
society and it makes those who suffer
from mental illness to feel ashamed and
belittled in times like this we need to
remember that while mental health is
significant in this impact on lifestyle
and this duration it is trivial in the
character of an individual so we shall
be able to accept and embrace the topic
of mental health the third and last step
to bridging the gap is to spread the
word there are many organizations out
there that support those who suffer from
mental illness such as time for change
based in UK however students it is
easier for us to reach out to those who
are nearby your school counsellors
principal or even the district office
are easily reachable either in person or
through email it is important to find a
community where your identity belongs
and where there is a group of people to
support you personally for me I have
found support within my church community
and it can be different communities for
everyone health is the number one reason
of concern for every living being so we
should be advocating for both mental and
physical health and teens can not simply
fit in a way for solutions to come by
because a social problem like this takes
generations to resolve so on days when
you feel beaten down while fighting for
this cause just remember to emotionally
move on and be more than who or why you
thank you so was it worth coming all the
way over from Washington State it was
quite nice and the tour around like
England general was as opposed to just
Hollow yeah yeah okay have you seen all
my mom and I went to Cambridge we
stopped off at the Liverpool Street
Station and walked around London and we
took a tour bus down to like Paddington
Station as well okay
other stations yeah but on the day that
we conduct or bus he was on their report
protesters on the Parliament building so
the roads were closed also we need to
take a detour message that if you’re
America just keep a low profile why’s
incredibly important the topic that what
made you choose that topic in particular
um I’m there I have friends who suffer
from mental illness personally and I
think throughout my life I have
experienced some events that happen a
bit traumatizing and I like even though
I didn’t get a practical medical
diagnosis or anything I know everyone in
the world goes through phases where they
feel down or away when they feel like
they’re very depressed or yeah something
like that and I feel like this is a very
relatable topic and I know there’s a lot
of TEDx talks done on this but we still
hesitate before talking about it within
our community so you came to break the
stigma we’ve mentioned before I’ve got
three children my message to them is get
yourself a sure you are mentally healthy
physically healthy educated and happy
and in that order that’s the message
okay what would be what would you have
children one day what would be your
message to your children as they set off
in the world in a world of challenges
and stresses I realized that everyone
talks about how the people that you
surround yourself with is very important
to your mental state but I’ve also found
the time that you spent on yourself is
very important as well and perhaps not
as well talked about
such as people talk about meditation or
like just sitting in a cafe just like
not doing anything this roof reflecting
on your life I feel like that’s a pretty
good employee just sitting there taking
space taking time taking a breath
seeing nice things treating yourself
you’re just just pausing excellent
advice for all of us Thank You Eunice thank you very much
